To go live from a computer webcam, make sure your YouTube channel is eligible, then open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Webcam. Set the stream details and privacy, check your camera and microphone, and select Go Live. You do not need live-encoding software for this basic webcam workflow.

Check eligibility before your broadcast

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to live stream.
  • If this is your first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of a scheduled broadcast rather than waiting until you are ready to go live.

YouTube’s rules for younger teens also matter: live streams featuring 13- to 15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat and other features restricted. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions for current eligibility details.

Start a webcam stream

  1. Open Live Control Room. On a computer, sign in to YouTube and select Create → Go Live.
  2. Choose the webcam workflow. In the left menu, select Webcam. YouTube lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible browsers; browser support can change, so check its webcam-streaming instructions if compatibility is an issue.
  3. Enter the stream details. Add a title and description. You can go live immediately or schedule the stream for later.
  4. Choose who can watch. Set the stream to Public, Unlisted, or Private. YouTube documents Private as the default for creators aged 13–17 and Public for creators aged 18 or older, but you can change the setting before starting.
  5. Review the options. Open More options and Advanced settings if you need to adjust them, then select Next.
  6. Check the devices and start. Confirm that the preview uses the intended webcam and microphone. When the image and sound are right, select Go Live.
  7. Finish the broadcast. In Live Control Room, select End stream when you are done.

YouTube describes Webcam as a way to go live from a computer without live-stream encoding software. A built-in camera is enough if it gives you the picture you want; a separate webcam is optional. YouTube also recommends trying a test stream before an important broadcast. See its live-streaming tips.

Privacy and screen sharing

Public, unlisted, or private

  • Public: The stream is available to viewers on YouTube.
  • Unlisted: Viewers need the stream link to find it.
  • Private: The stream is limited to the people you allow to watch.

Choose the setting for your intended audience before going live. For a rehearsal, YouTube recommends testing in public or unlisted mode; use the visibility option that fits what you want viewers to access.

Share your screen while using a webcam

You can share a whole screen, a window, or a browser tab from Live Control Room. You need a connected webcam and microphone for this webcam-based screen-sharing workflow. A supported browser tab shares its audio by default. Check what is visible in the selected screen or window before sharing, especially if notifications or private information might appear. YouTube explains the choices in its webcam instructions.

When to use an encoder instead

The webcam route is suited to a straightforward computer-camera broadcast. If you need gameplay capture, overlays, multiple cameras, or external audio gear such as preamps, YouTube describes encoder streaming as the more appropriate workflow. It has additional setup compared with selecting Webcam, so use it when your production needs those capabilities rather than adding complexity to a simple camera stream. See YouTube’s encoder-streaming guidance.

After the stream

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and made available from the channel’s Live tab. Longer streams are not covered by that automatic-archive assurance, so do not rely on an archive for a broadcast that may run 12 hours or more. See YouTube’s live-stream archive information.

Troubleshoot common webcam-stream problems

The Webcam option is unavailable

Check channel verification, the channel’s live-stream restriction status for the previous 90 days, and whether live streaming has been enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Also confirm that you meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement.

Viewers cannot hear you

Check that the intended microphone is selected and that it is connected. For screen sharing through the webcam workflow, YouTube requires both a connected webcam and microphone.

Someone cannot watch the stream

Review the stream’s privacy setting. Private streams are limited to invited viewers, while unlisted streams require the link; a public stream is the appropriate choice when you want it publicly available.

You need gameplay, overlays, or several devices

Those needs go beyond the simple webcam path. Use an encoder workflow when you require gameplay capture, overlays, multiple cameras, or more involved external audio and video equipment.
