Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Downloading an image does not normally give you a public web URL. It gives your device a local file and a local path. To get the original image address, return to the webpage and use the browser’s image-link command. To share the downloaded copy, upload it to a hosting or cloud-storage service and copy a permitted share link.
“URL of a downloaded image” can mean three different things: the original online image URL, the local location on your device, or a new web link for other people. The right steps depend on which one you need.
First, identify which URL you need
| What you need | What it points to | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Original image URL | The image resource still hosted on the website | Open the online image and choose the browser’s “Copy image address” or “Copy image link” command. |
| Local file location | The copy saved on your computer or phone | Open the browser’s Downloads view or your device’s file manager. |
| Share URL | A hosted copy that another person can access | Upload the file to an image host or cloud-storage service, configure access, and copy its share link. |
A path such as C:UsersNameDownloadsphoto.jpg, /Users/name/Downloads/photo.jpg, or file:///storage/emulated/0/Download/photo.jpg identifies a file on one device. It is not automatically reachable from the internet or from another person’s device.
Copy the original image URL while it is still online
Desktop Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari
- Return to the page containing the image, or open the image itself in a browser tab.
- Right-click (or Control-click on a Mac) the image.
- Choose the command named Copy image address, Copy image link, or a similar image-specific option.
- Paste the result into a text editor or message to verify it. A direct image address often ends in an extension such as
.jpg,.png,.gif, or.webp, but many sites use URLs without an extension.
Do not choose Copy link on a surrounding button unless you want the page URL. A page URL opens the webpage; an image URL requests the image resource itself. Some sites also serve a viewer page, thumbnail, or temporary URL instead of a permanent raw file.

Google Images on a computer
Open the result, then use the image’s context menu or the browser’s copy-address command. Google may show both the image source page and an image resource. Confirm which one you copied before sharing or embedding it.
Android
- Open the image or Google Images result in Chrome (or your preferred browser).
- Press and hold the image.
- Choose Copy image link or the equivalent option shown by that browser.
- Paste the link somewhere you can inspect it.
Android menus differ between browsers, websites, and app versions. If the option is missing, open the source page in a full browser rather than an in-app preview.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the original page in Safari or another full browser.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Choose Copy, Copy Link, or the image-address option offered by the site.
- Paste the result to determine whether it is an image URL or the page URL.
On touch devices, a long press may save the image without exposing its address. If that happens, use the page’s share menu, open the image in a new tab, or switch to a desktop browser.
If you only have the downloaded file
A downloaded file usually does not retain a universally recoverable record of the webpage URL. File names, EXIF metadata, browser history, and download records may help in some cases, but none is a guaranteed recovery method. The most reliable practical route is to search your browser history for the page where you saw the image and copy the address from there.

Find it in Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome’s menu (three dots).
- Select Downloads, or press
Ctrl+Jon Windows/Linux orCommand+Shift+Jon macOS. - Use Show in folder (or the equivalent) to open the saved file’s location.
- Move or rename the file if needed. Moving it changes the local location, not its web address.
Find it on macOS or Windows
Use Finder’s Downloads folder on macOS or File Explorer’s Downloads folder on Windows. Search by the filename or by image type. A file’s Properties or Get Info window can show size, dates, and metadata, but it should not be treated as proof of the original source URL.

Find it on a phone
Open the Files, My Files, Photos, or equivalent file-management app and check Downloads. Images saved through a social or messaging app may instead be in that app’s media folder or photo library.
Create a shareable URL for the downloaded image
- Choose an image-hosting or cloud-storage service.
- Upload the local image file.
- Set access to the intended audience—private, specific people, or anyone with the link.
- Copy the service’s share link and test it in a private browser window or while signed out.
A share link may open a landing page with a preview rather than return raw image bytes. That is suitable for human sharing, but an HTML <img> tag, a CSS background, or an API may require a direct image endpoint. Cloud-storage services expose object URLs only when the object and its permissions are configured accordingly; never make a private file public accidentally.
Share link versus direct image URL
- Share/page link: opens a host’s page, preview, or download screen.
- Direct image URL: returns the image resource itself and is suitable for many embeds.
- Temporary or signed URL: includes permission information and may expire.
Use the link type required by the destination. If a recipient receives an access-denied message, change the file’s sharing permission or invite that person explicitly.
Use the URL in common tasks
Send it to someone
Use the original URL if the recipient should see the source image, or a hosted share URL if you own the downloaded copy. Test the link in a private window first.
Embed it in HTML
Use a direct, authorized image URL:
<img src="https://example.com/path/photo.jpg" alt="Description">
Do not hotlink images when the site’s terms prohibit it. A page URL inside src may display an error because it is not an image resource.

Troubleshooting
“Copy image address” is not available
The image may be inside a protected viewer, canvas, app webview, or overlay. Open the source page in a full browser, open the image in a new tab, or use the site’s own share command. Saving the image alone will not create a URL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe copied link opens a webpage, not the image
You copied the source-page or preview URL. Repeat the copy action on the image itself, or locate the host’s direct-download option. Some services intentionally provide only a page link.
The link worked yesterday but now fails
The address may be temporary, require a login, depend on cookies, or have been removed. Copying a new source URL or uploading your own copy to a service with suitable sharing settings is the dependable fix.
The recipient sees “access denied”
Change the hosted file’s permissions to the intended audience, create a new share link, and test while signed out. Do not publish sensitive images merely to avoid an access error.

The downloaded image has no obvious source information
That is normal. Check browser history, the original page, messages, or bookmarks. There is no universal metadata field that guarantees the original URL survived the download.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual goal is to obtain a clean, repeatable screenshot of a webpage rather than recover an image’s historical URL, ScreenshotNeo can return the page as an image or PDF through one request. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents such as Claude or Cursor take screenshots.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. A minimal cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The equivalent Python request:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Key takeaways
- A downloaded image has a local location, not an automatic public URL.
- Copy the original address from the online image while you can.
- If only the file remains, browser history may help, but recovery is not guaranteed.
- For sharing, upload the file and verify access permissions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a file:/// URL into a public URL?
No. A file URL identifies a local filesystem location. Upload the image to a hosting or cloud-storage service and configure sharing to create a web-accessible link.
Will renaming the image reveal its original URL?
No. A filename or extension does not reliably encode the webpage address.
Why does an image URL stop working?
The source may use an expiring address, require authentication, block hotlinking, or have removed the image. A hosted copy with appropriate permissions is more dependable for sharing.
