Use await browser.version() on the Puppeteer Browser instance. It returns a Promise<string> identifying the connected browser and its version, such as Chrome/61.0.3153.0. Puppeteer notes that the string format may change, so treat it as a runtime report rather than a permanent parsing contract. Puppeteer Browser.version() documentation.

Get the browser name and version

Call version() after Puppeteer has connected to or launched a browser. Because it is asynchronous, use await inside an async function:

const browserNameAndVersion = await browser.version();
console.log(browserNameAndVersion);

The result is a single string, not separate name and version fields. Puppeteer’s API examples include HeadlessChrome/61.0.3153.0, Chrome/61.0.3153.0, and Firefox/116.0a1. These are documentation examples, not a statement of current browser versions. The method is documented as returning a string representing the browser’s name and version. Puppeteer API reference.

Complete example

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const browserNameAndVersion = await browser.version();
  console.log(browserNameAndVersion);
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

If your project uses CommonJS, replace the import with const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');. The browser must be available and the launch or connection must succeed before version() can report its identity.

Interpret the returned value safely

Use the returned string directly for logs, diagnostics, or display. Puppeteer warns that its format may change with future browser releases. If you need to detect a broad family, inspect the string cautiously and allow for values beyond the ones in the examples; avoid depending on a rigid split position or an exact full-string match.

If your own application chooses the browser, its launch configuration is a more stable record of what you requested. The runtime method answers a different question: what name and version the connected Browser instance reports. Puppeteer’s configuration documents Chrome as the default browser and PUPPETEER_BROWSER as an environment-variable override. Puppeteer configuration reference.

Browser.version() versus userAgent()

Use browser.version() when you want Puppeteer’s browser name and version. Use browser.userAgent() when you need the browser’s original user-agent string. They are not interchangeable: Puppeteer notes that a page’s user agent can be overridden with Page.setUserAgent(). Puppeteer Browser.userAgent() documentation.

Supported browser names and compatibility

Puppeteer documents Chrome and Firefox as supported browser families. Its supported-browser documentation maps Puppeteer releases to particular Chrome for Testing and Firefox releases, and that pairing is release-sensitive. Check the current compatibility page for the Puppeteer version in your project instead of assuming a browser/version pairing from an older example. Troubleshoot common problems

  • The result is a Promise or logs unexpectedly. Await the call: const value = await browser.version();. Without await, your variable holds the promise rather than the resolved string.
  • The value is not the browser you expected. Confirm which browser was selected by your launch configuration or PUPPETEER_BROWSER, then check the connected instance with browser.version(). A configured selection describes what you requested; the method reports what the instance identifies itself as.
  • Your parser stops recognizing a browser. Do not assume the output always has an unchanged format. Handle unknown strings and use the configuration you control when an application requires a stable browser-selection contract.
  • You need a user-agent header, not a browser identity. Call browser.userAgent() for the original user agent, and account for any page-level override made with Page.setUserAgent().
  • The call fails because no browser is connected. Run it only after a successful launch or connection. Check the preceding launch/connect error and the browser executable or remote endpoint rather than treating version() as a browser installer or selector.

Or skip the browser setup

If the goal is to capture a website rather than inspect a Puppeteer browser instance, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie/consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
