To get ready for ranked VALORANT after watching Champions, learn the round objective, practice stopping before you shoot, and get comfortable with one agent’s abilities. Start in Unrated or Swiftplay while you build those habits; check the in-game Competitive queue for the current ranked unlock requirements before planning your first match.
Learn what wins a round
VALORANT alternates between attacker and defender sides. Attackers try to plant and detonate the Spike; defenders try to prevent the plant or defuse the Spike after it is planted. You do not need advanced tactics to begin: first learn the objective, follow your team toward it, and pay attention to how each round ends.
The pre-round buy phase is part of that plan. You spend available credits on weapons and abilities, so consider what the round calls for and what you can afford. Riot’s Beginner’s Guide presents buying as preparation for the coming round, not a choice separate from the team’s approach.
Choose one agent and learn the job
Agents have distinct abilities and roles. Choose one whose abilities make sense to you, then learn how they can help your team pursue or defend the objective. A newcomer does not need to unlock or master every agent before learning the fundamentals, and abilities do not replace the need to take accurate gunfights.

As you play, notice what your team needs and how your agent can contribute. You can expand your agent pool later; early on, understanding a small set of abilities is more useful than trying to memorize the whole roster. Riot’s 2024 guide listed 24 agents at the time it was published, but that count is dated and should not be treated as the current roster size.
Practice movement and shooting before adding pressure
Riot’s beginner advice is to stop moving before firing to improve accuracy. In practice games, focus on controlling your movement, settling before a shot, and choosing when to engage rather than firing while running.

- Notice whether running could reveal your approach through sound.
- Before using an ability, consider whether it helps with the next objective or fight.
- Pay attention to where teammates are and avoid taking a fight without a reason to do so.
These habits give you a practical foundation without requiring complicated lineups or advanced strategies. The official VALORANT beginner guide also recommends thinking about noise and ability use as part of each round.
Use Unrated or Swiftplay to learn the flow
Play Unrated or Swiftplay while getting comfortable with the round loop, buys, agent abilities, and communication. Riot recommends these modes for players who want a break from Competitive. They are also sensible places to experiment before you bring unfamiliar choices into ranked.

When you do try Competitive, keep your early goals simple: understand the objective, make a reasonable buy, communicate useful information, and apply the movement habits you have practiced. A match is a chance to learn the mode as well as compete.
Communicate with the tools you are comfortable using
Useful communication can be brief: share enemy locations, a threat, or what you plan to do. Riot’s beginner guide identifies voice chat, location pings, and agent voice lines as communication options. A headset with a microphone is optional; you can still communicate using pings and in-game voice lines.

Prioritize information that helps teammates make a decision. If you use voice chat, concise callouts are more useful than filling every quiet moment.

Do not rely on an old guide or a remembered level threshold to determine when Competitive unlocks. Riot’s beginner guide does not specify the current unlock requirement. Check the Competitive queue in the client, and consult Riot Support if the game does not explain what remains to unlock.

Maps in the Competitive pool can change. Riot’s Patch 12.08 notes, published April 28, 2026, say Ascent entered and Bind left the Competitive and Deathmatch map queues in that patch. That is a dated rotation notice, not confirmation of the live pool today; check the in-game queue for the maps currently available.
