Start with the main story, settle on one Martial Arts pairing, and learn when to deflect or dodge before you try to clear the map. Along the way, activate nearby Boundary Stones and use Wind Sense on clues and Oddities; take short side-quest detours when they help with a current need, then return to the story. Your first-session goal is a combat setup that works and a clear next quest—not a perfect build or a completed map.
What should I do first in Where Winds Meet?
Use the opening story route to learn the game’s systems in context. You do not need to understand every menu before moving forward: follow the prompts that introduce combat and progression, and open other systems when a new reward, lock, or combat problem gives you a reason.
- Follow the main story. Continue through the early Qinghe route until the game has introduced its core combat and progression menus. Treat the story as your route through the basics, not as an obstacle to exploring.
- Choose one manageable Martial Arts pairing. Give yourself time to learn its range, attack rhythm, and defensive timing instead of changing styles after every fight.
- Practice against one enemy at a time. Watch for attack cues. Try a deflect when you understand the timing; dodge when the attack is delayed, unclear, or safer to avoid.
- Activate nearby Boundary Stones. They add useful travel points as you move through the region. Make a quick detour when one is close, but do not turn the route into a search for every marker.
- Use Wind Sense around clues and Oddities. Check the immediate area for the relevant interaction, then move on if the objective is not accessible yet.
- Open progression menus in response to a need. A new reward, a locked upgrade, or a fight that exposes a weakness is a better reason to inspect a system than a notification dot by itself.
- Return to the main quest after a short detour. Use nearby side quests and discoveries to support your progress, rather than leaving the story to clear the entire map.
This loop keeps the early game manageable: advance the story, learn one combat setup, take useful nearby opportunities, and keep a clear next objective.

When comparing options, consider the practical demands of your current fights rather than chasing a tier-list verdict:
- Combat reliability: Can you recognize when to defend, and recover when an attack does not land as planned?
- Range and spacing: Does the style let you fight at a distance that feels readable, or does it require you to stay close?
- Survivability: Does the setup give you defensive or recovery options you can use consistently?
- Crowd control: Are you having difficulty with groups rather than single opponents?
- Exploration value: Does an associated skill help with an obstacle or interaction outside combat?
- Resource and menu burden: Can you make the setup functional without trying to upgrade several competing styles at once?
- Version stability: Does the choice depend on a balance value or path that may have changed in a recent update?
Keep the comparison simple at first. Choose a pairing, use it long enough to notice whether the issue is timing, range, or a specific skill, and change one variable at a time. If you replace your whole setup after every defeat, it becomes harder to tell what actually helped.
How do I deflect and dodge attacks?
A deflect is a timed defensive response; a dodge is the safer choice when you cannot confidently meet an attack’s timing. Watch the enemy’s cues before committing to a long attack sequence, then choose the response that fits the attack you can see.
When to try a deflect
Try a deflect when you have observed the enemy’s attack rhythm and can identify the moment to respond. Practice against a single opponent, pay attention to what happens when the input succeeds or misses, and avoid treating every incoming attack as an invitation to counter. A timing you have not learned is not a reliable opening.
When to dodge instead
Dodge when an attack is delayed, ambiguous, or easier to avoid than to time precisely. It is also a sensible choice while you are still learning an enemy’s pattern. The aim is not to deflect everything; it is to stay safe long enough to recognize a dependable opening.

Make your inputs and camera easier to manage
Keep the target and camera under control so you can see the opponent’s cues. If a defensive input seems inconsistent, check your current input settings before concluding that you have misunderstood the timing. The official Version 2.3 patch notes include changes to queued Deflection and Dodge inputs and to lock-on behavior, so instructions written for an earlier version may not describe the current feel exactly.
When a fight goes badly, change one thing: adjust your timing, try a different spacing, or review a relevant skill or setting. That makes it easier to learn from the next attempt than rebuilding every part of your character at once.
Should I follow the main story or explore?
Follow the story as your progression spine, especially along the early Qinghe route, and explore in short, useful detours. Side quests and discoveries can provide resources and unlocks, but early progress does not require clearing every icon before continuing the main objective.
Use a simple exploration loop
- Stay on the story route until a nearby point of interest or side quest is easy to reach.
- Activate a Boundary Stone when you pass one, so travel infrastructure grows naturally with your route.
- Use Wind Sense when you are near a clue or Oddity that you want to investigate.
- If an objective appears unreachable, check whether it is above or below you, whether another route leads to it, or whether a quest or ability must come first.
- If the required interaction is not available, leave the puzzle and return later rather than treating it as a combat challenge.
- Resume the story after the detour, keeping one clear next objective.
Qingzhou is a current example of why exploration can be worthwhile without becoming a completionist task. The official Version 2.3 developer letter describes it as a region with villages, vertical geography, local NPC relationships, and new activities. Those features give exploration a role in the experience, but they do not make every location an early-game prerequisite.
Why a marker may not be reachable yet
A marker can be difficult to reach because of elevation, route access, or a quest requirement—not because you need to win another fight. Look around the objective, check for a path that approaches from a different height, and consider whether the game has introduced the ability or interaction it appears to need. If those checks do not reveal a route, mark it mentally for later and continue.

Upgrade the parts of your current setup that you actually use, and resolve the lock requirement shown in the relevant menu before spending materials. The game separates combat styles, equipment, passive effects, abilities, talents, exploration, and reward claims; a red dot or new item does not mean every system needs immediate investment.

- Gear: Equipment associated with the setup you are using. Focus on relevant equipment rather than optimizing every possible configuration at once.
- Inner Ways: Passive or conditional effects that shape a build. Consider them as support for a setup, not a separate task that must be perfected immediately.
- Mystic Skills: Utility or combat abilities with their own unlocks and resource needs. Check what an ability requires before planning around it.
- Talents: Additional branches or mode-specific choices. Their availability and purpose may depend on what the game has introduced so far.
- Exploration: Clues, Oddities, puzzle interactions, and regional rewards.

A practical upgrade decision tree
- Is the feature available? If a menu, button, or branch is missing, check whether its introduction or unlock requirement has been met.
- Is the upgrade locked? Read the lock reason in the game. Treat that requirement as the next task; do not spend materials on an unrelated system to guess your way past it.
- Does it support your active setup? Prioritize the gear, Martial Arts, or skill you currently use. Save resources for other options until you have a reason to switch.
- Is a fight exposing a specific problem? Address that problem—such as timing, spacing, or a relevant skill—rather than upgrading every menu at once.
- Did you earn something that seems missing? Check the bag, journal, and rewards areas for an item or claim that may still be waiting.
English menu labels and arrangements can differ by platform and update, and some features remain hidden until their introduction is complete. Follow the in-game tooltip and the displayed lock reason rather than assuming that a different-looking menu or missing button is a bug.
Why is my upgrade locked?
Start with the lock message, not with material spending. An upgrade can remain unavailable because its stated requirement has not been met, or because the feature has not yet been introduced in your progression; the exact reason should be checked in the current in-game tooltip.
Use this troubleshooting order:
- Read the full requirement. Do not infer the unlock condition from the icon or the name of the upgrade.
- Check your current quest and progression. If the system has not been introduced, continue the relevant story or feature introduction.
- Look for a required interaction or item. Check the menus where earned items and claims are shown before trying unrelated upgrades.
- Confirm the displayed menu labels on your platform. Guides can show a different arrangement from your current client.
- Recheck after meeting the requirement. If the lock remains, inspect the tooltip again for a second condition rather than spending resources elsewhere.
A lock is useful information: it tells you what the game expects next. Solving that condition is usually more efficient than trying to optimize a system you cannot yet use.
How do I use Wind Sense?
Use Wind Sense when you are near a clue or Oddity you want to investigate, then inspect the surrounding space for the relevant lead or interaction. It is an exploration aid, not a reason to stop at every point of interest on the map.

If the target remains unclear or inaccessible, check its height and the paths around it. Consider whether a quest or ability is required, and return later if the needed interaction has not been introduced. This prevents a confusing marker from consuming time that would be better spent advancing the story or completing a nearby task.
Do I need to clear every map marker?
No. Full-map completion is optional for a beginner’s first route. Exploration can add progression, resources, and stories, but the early priority is a working combat setup and a clear next quest.
Do not ignore side quests altogether: they can help with resources and feature unlocks. Prefer the ones that are nearby or meet a current need, and postpone distant or difficult puzzles when their route or required interaction is not clear. You can return when your story progress or abilities make the objective easier to approach.

What has changed in Version 2.3?
As of November 5, 2026, the current context described by the official materials is Version 2.3. The official patch notes dated October 15 cover changes to Deflection and Dodge input handling and lock-on behavior, as well as multiplayer Wooden Stake training improvements. They also state that the Warehouse unlocks at Level 20.
The official Version 2.3 developer letter says Qingzhou opened on October 15, 2026. A developer letter dated October 28 announced Penglai and additional experiences opening on October 29. Because patches can change combat feel, features, and menu paths, check the live patch and your platform before following older instructions; an older guide may describe a previous input behavior or progression context.
