Think of low range as a control setting, not a penalty. If the vehicle begins to slide, bounce or spin, reduce speed and reassess the line instead of adding throttle. On easy ground, high range shortens travel time; change back to low before the next demanding section.
Driving steep, slippery and rough terrain
Steep climbs
Scout the slope before committing. A route that looks shorter on the map may have a sharper pitch than a longer switchback. Align the vehicle as squarely as possible with the climb, select low range, and use a steady input. If the vehicle stops making progress, stop rather than repeatedly accelerating. Slippery or muddy sections
Use low range and avoid sudden steering changes. Enter with enough momentum to keep moving, but not so much that you cannot correct the vehicle. Follow the firmest-looking line and leave room to reverse. If the surface begins to pull the vehicle sideways, straighten the steering, reduce power and regain a stable heading before continuing.
Rough ground and narrow trails
Rough ground rewards wheel placement. Approach ledges and uneven patches at an angle that keeps the vehicle stable, then pause to inspect what follows. Narrow trails are poor places to discover that you have no recovery plan; identify a nearby winch point or a wider turning area first.

Visibility changes
Dynamic weather and day/night cycles can reduce what you can see. PC Gamer describes using a winch on rough trails while exploring, and the changing conditions make that tool more valuable. When visibility drops, slow down, rely more on the map, and avoid committing to an unseen drop or gap. Reaching a landmark later is preferable to losing a vehicle in terrain you could not read.
Winches and planks: recovery before rescue
Steam specifically highlights winches for recovering vehicles and planks for crossing gaps. Treat both as planning tools rather than emergency buttons you use only after becoming stuck.

- At a gap: do not assume momentum will carry you across. Use a plank when the crossing requires one, position the vehicle carefully, and keep the approach straight.
- After recovery: move to firm ground before changing direction or range. A successful pull does not mean the surrounding surface is safe.
In co-op, one player can scout the approach while another handles recovery or obstacle setup. In solo play, stop more often to perform the same checks yourself. The extra seconds spent preparing are usually less costly than an uncontrolled slide that leaves the vehicle in a worse position.
How exploration works
Use the map and nearby points of interest as prompts, then take reasonable detours. The official listing names remote cabins, scenic viewpoints, natural landmarks, meteorites, portals to new areas, wildlife and equipment scattered throughout the world. You do not need to choose between “main route” and “nothing”; a manageable detour can provide resources, a new vehicle capability or a discovery that makes the next trip more worthwhile.
Points of interest and portals
When a landmark appears within reach, compare the direct line with a broader route around the terrain. A portal can open access to a new area, but arriving there safely is more important than reaching it first. Mark difficult approaches mentally or on your route plan so you can return after gaining equipment.

Wildlife photography
Use the in-game camera to photograph animals and fill the wildlife compendium. PC Gamer reports photographing a raven and a coyote and describes a longer completion loop involving every point of interest, vehicle, cosmetic, upgrade and meteorite. Stop the vehicle before taking a shot; rushing after an animal can turn a harmless sighting into a recovery problem.

Meteorites
Meteorites are a distinct exploration target. PC Gamer reports that a special installed gear item helps locate them. Once you find one, you must reach it off-road and pull it free with the winch. That makes meteorite hunting a two-part task: install or obtain the locating equipment, then solve the terrain and recovery challenge at the site. If the approach is beyond your current capability, note its location and return after improving the vehicle.
Upgrades, Pebbles and a sensible progression plan
Exploration provides resources for improvement. TechRadar identifies Pebbles as the currency for vehicle upgrades. Steam also says upgrades and equipment are found throughout the world, while merchants and cabins support vehicle colors, accessories and cosmetics.

If you can already cross the local terrain comfortably, save Pebbles for the next meaningful limitation.

Co-op is especially useful when one player scouts a line and another helps with a winch or plank. The store description frames those tools as ways to overcome obstacles together. Do not let the presence of assistance encourage reckless driving: a recovery still takes time, and several vehicles can block a narrow trail.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Trying to solve every slope with acceleration

Taking the shortest line on the map

Entering rough ground without a recovery point
Symptom: the vehicle is stuck with no clear place to attach the winch. Fix: scout first, then return to firm ground and approach from a direction that leaves a recovery option.
