To get sales leads from LinkedIn, decide which companies and buyer roles fit your offer, find and qualify those accounts and people, save a focused list, then contact each prospect with a specific reason for reaching out. You can do this without Sales Navigator; its paid search, alerts, lead-management and InMail features may help when they solve a real workflow problem.
1. Define the customers and buyers you want
Start with an ideal customer profile (ICP): a short description of the organizations that are most likely to benefit from what you sell. Then identify the people involved in evaluating or buying it. A broad search for anyone who might conceivably be interested creates a list that is harder to qualify and easier to contact with generic messages.
Write down a few criteria you can actually use to assess fit:
- Industry: Which sectors have the problem your offer addresses?
- Geography: Which regions can you serve?
- Company size: What headcount, revenue range or department size makes the solution relevant?
- Buyer roles: Which functions, seniority levels or job titles are involved in the decision?
- Account clues: Are company growth, open jobs or another identifiable business circumstance relevant to your offer?
For example, a service aimed at improving a sales team’s workflow might target companies with a sales department of a suitable size, then focus on the leaders responsible for that function. The criteria should follow the offer, not merely be filters that are available in a search tool.

2. Find the right companies and people
Choose an account-first or role-first search depending on how your customers buy. In an account-first approach, identify likely-fit companies, save them to a named list, and then look for relevant decision-makers within those accounts. LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator materials describe account criteria such as industry, headcount, annual revenue, department size and growth, and job opportunities. In a role-first approach, search for the functions and seniority levels that match your buyer, then narrow results using company criteria.
Account-first prospecting
- Search for companies using the criteria in your ICP, such as industry, region and headcount.
- Review each company against your offer; do not treat every search result as a qualified account.
- Save suitable companies into a clearly named account list.
- Search for people associated with those accounts, using relevant filters such as function, seniority, title and region.
- Check each person’s role and likely involvement before saving them as a lead.
Role-first prospecting
- Search for the function, seniority or job titles associated with the buying decision.
- Narrow the people results by company criteria so the list reflects your ICP.
- Review the person’s current role and organization to confirm the fit.
- Save only qualified prospects to a list you can review and follow up.
LinkedIn describes Sales Navigator’s Advanced Lead Search as offering 40+ filters and gives examples including Personas, Function, Seniority, Current Company, Account Lists, Company Headcount and Region. Filter names, counts and availability can change, so check the interface available to your account rather than assuming every option is present in every edition.
3. Save leads and monitor what changes
Keep your prospecting list small enough to review and meaningful enough to act on. Use names that make the list’s purpose obvious, such as “US mid-market operations leaders,” rather than a generic label that will be confusing later. Save qualified leads and, where available, searches so you can revisit them instead of rebuilding the same criteria.

Review alerts and relevant account or lead updates for changes that might affect fit or timing. A new role, a recent post or a change at the company can give you a timely reason to check the prospect’s context. An alert is a prompt to review, not proof that someone is ready to buy.

4. Find a genuine reason to contact someone
Before sending a message, look at the prospect’s current role, recent activity and company context. Consider whether you share a connection or relevant experience. If a colleague knows the person and can make a genuine introduction, ask for one; do not imply that a relationship exists when it does not.
A useful outreach reason connects something specific about the person or account to a business issue your offer addresses. “I saw your company is hiring for several roles in this function” is only useful if that hiring context genuinely relates to the problem you can help solve. A generic compliment or a pasted product pitch does not make a message personal.

Replace every bracket with accurate information, and leave out any sentence that does not apply to that person. A brief note that makes the relevance clear is preferable to a long, generic pitch. LinkedIn recommends choosing likely responders, using a clear subject line, highlighting genuine mutual connections and personalizing InMail.
Using InMail
InMail is one possible contact route in Sales Navigator, not a guarantee that you can message every member. LinkedIn Help says some members’ settings do not allow InMail, and subscription limits apply. Its guidance also says bulk InMail messaging is unavailable and messages must be sent individually. If InMail is unavailable, choose another appropriate channel rather than repeatedly trying to bypass the member’s settings.
6. Record follow-ups and next steps
Use a CRM or a simple tracking system so that prospecting does not depend on memory. For each lead, record the account, contact, reason for fit, outreach date, response and agreed next step. Update the record when a conversation changes the prospect’s fit or timing, and avoid contacting someone again without first checking the history.

Should you use Sales Navigator?
Sales Navigator is optional paid software. LinkedIn positions it for sales professionals who need to identify buyers, understand accounts and act on timely signals. Consider it when its specific search, saved-lead, alert, account-insight or InMail functions fit the way you prospect—not simply because you want more leads.
| Decision factor | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Search depth | Do the additional lead and account filters remove enough irrelevant results to improve your workflow? |
| Ongoing workflow | Will you consistently use saved lead lists, alerts or team collaboration? |
| Outreach | Can InMail reach the people you need to contact, considering member settings and subscription limits? |
| CRM fit | Does the plan include the integration or team workflow you actually need? |
| Cost and terms | Does the current price and plan structure in your geography make sense for your usage? |
Current Sales Navigator prices and geography-specific terms are not established here; check LinkedIn’s current plan information before purchasing. A subscription can make discovery and organization easier, but it does not promise a fixed number of leads or sales. Outcomes still depend on the fit of the offer, targeting, message, timing and execution.
What LinkedIn’s performance figures do—and do not—show
LinkedIn has published comparisons associated with Sales Navigator usage. Its prospecting page reported in March 2026 that users who find warm paths in had 2.7 times more accepted connection requests than users who did not, and that users who use customer account insights had 12% more closed deals than those who did not. These are LinkedIn-reported comparisons, not guarantees for an individual seller or proof that a feature alone caused the difference.
LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator ROI page also presents figures of 71% higher InMail response rates and 22% higher win rates when engaging buyers when they show intent. The methodology is not fully established in the material reviewed, so treat these as LinkedIn’s claims rather than expected results. A customer testimonial on LinkedIn’s prospecting page quotes Harri Carroll, EMEA Customer Success Manager at Gainsight: “Sales Navigator has allowed us to engage and connect with key stakeholders that were unknown to us previously.” That is one customer’s account, not independent evidence that every seller will achieve the same outcome.
Quick Recap
Common prospecting problems and fixes
- The search returns too many people: Tighten the ICP and add account, role, seniority, region or company-size criteria. Remove filters that do not distinguish a good prospect from a poor one.
- The list is large but few leads fit: Qualify people against the actual business problem and buying role before saving them. A matching title alone does not establish need or authority.
- Messages get little engagement: Recheck whether the recipient and account fit, whether your reason for contacting them is specific, and whether the proposed next step is easy to understand. Do not assume a paid tool will fix an irrelevant message.
- You cannot send an InMail: The member may not allow it, or your subscription may have usage limits. Use another appropriate channel when available; do not treat the setting as an obstacle to evade.
- You lose track of follow-ups: Record the contact date, response and next step in a CRM or lightweight system, and review that history before another approach.
- A saved search or filter looks different: LinkedIn’s product options can change. Check the current interface and plan rather than relying on an old filter count or label.
