You may be able to refund a game that is faulty, unavailable, or materially different from its description, but a simple change of mind is handled under each store’s own policy. Start with the seller that charged you, check its deadline and usage conditions, and preserve your receipt, account, download or streaming status, playtime, error messages, screenshots, and support correspondence.

This guide explains the current published rules for Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop in the United States, and what to do when consumer law gives you additional rights. Xbox-specific limits must be checked in the live Microsoft account flow because a verified official threshold was not established here.

What counts as a refund-worthy problem?

Stores usually separate a voluntary “change of mind” request from a claim that the digital content is defective or misdescribed. The distinction matters more than how strongly you dislike the game.

Change of mind or unmet personal expectations

Examples include finding the genre boring, disliking the art style, discovering that the difficulty is too high, or deciding that the game is not worth the price after playing it. A platform may offer a short cooling-off window for this type of request, but it can impose strict time, download, or playtime limits. Nintendo’s US policy, for example, says payments are final unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one.

Faulty, unavailable, or misdescribed content

A stronger request identifies an objective problem: repeated crashes, an error that prevents launch, missing content advertised on the store page, the wrong edition, an inability to access the purchased license, or performance that does not match the description. Save reproducible details rather than saying only that the game is “bad.”

Unauthorized or incorrect transactions

If someone else used your account, you bought the wrong version, or a duplicate charge occurred, state that specific fact. The seller may route these cases through a different support category, and the evidence needed can differ from a normal dissatisfaction request.

Collect evidence before contacting the seller

Refund windows can expire while you are troubleshooting. Assemble the transaction record first, then submit the request through the store that processed payment.

  • Transaction identity: game title, order or receipt number, purchase date, account email or user ID, platform, and payment method.
  • Use history: whether the game was downloaded, streamed, launched, or played, plus an honest estimate of playtime.
  • Problem record: exact error text, crash frequency, missing feature, inaccessible entitlement, or mismatch between the listing and what you received.
  • Evidence: screenshots, short recordings where accepted, system logs, the store listing, and correspondence with support.
  • Requested remedy: refund to the original payment method, store credit, replacement, repair, or another remedy permitted by the policy or law.

Do not delete the game or alter account records before documenting the problem. Downloading or streaming can affect eligibility on some platforms, while on others it is playtime or a legal defect that matters.

Platform rules at a glance

Platform Published timing or usage rule Download or streaming effect Faulty or misdescribed content Request channel and destination
Steam Within 14 days of purchase and under 2 hours played for the standard automatic rule Playtime includes online, offline, and shared-library use; downloading itself is not the stated cutoff Requests outside the standard rule can still be submitted for review Steam Help; choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method
Epic Games Store Product is labeled self-refundable or refundable; PC/Mac early-access and beta purchases require under 2 hours of runtime for the stated rule Check the product’s label and exclusions; console or third-party purchases follow that seller Submit through Player Support when the normal self-service route does not apply Transactions page for self-refundable purchases; otherwise Player Support
PlayStation Store Generally within 14 days Games and DLC generally must not have been downloaded or streamed Faulty content may remain eligible even when the normal checklist is not met; local law can add rights PlayStation refund assistant or the account transaction-history process
Nintendo eShop (US) No general change-of-mind period is promised A downloaded game that you simply dislike is normally non-refundable Only an authorized exception or applicable law changes the result Nintendo Account support process; payment is ordinarily final
Xbox Verify the live regional terms; a current Xbox-specific threshold was not established here Do not assume Steam’s two-hour rule applies Explain the defect and use Microsoft’s purchase-history refund flow Microsoft/Xbox account purchase history and the regional support terms

How to request a Steam refund

Valve’s standard promise is explicit: “Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any title that is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than 2 hours.” The rule covers online, offline, and shared-library playtime.

  1. Open Steam Help and sign in to the account that bought the title.
  2. Open Purchases and select the game.
  3. Choose the problem that best describes the situation.
  4. Select I’d like to request a refund.
  5. Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method, then submit the form.

If you are outside 14 days or above two hours, submit the request anyway when the game is faulty, inaccessible, or materially misdescribed. Valve says such requests can still be sent for review; approval is not automatic. Describe the defect and attach evidence instead of trying to fit a legal or technical problem into a generic “not fun” explanation.

Steam in-game purchases

In-game purchases in Valve-developed games may be refundable within 48 hours when the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. That is a separate rule from a full-game refund, so identify the item and its transaction time precisely.

How to request an Epic Games Store refund

Epic labels products as self-refundable, refundable, or non-refundable. Paid games are generally refundable under the applicable label, but subscriptions, in-app purchases, in-game items, consumables, and virtual currency are usually excluded unless law requires otherwise.

Self-refundable purchase

  1. Sign in to the Epic account that made the purchase.
  2. Open the Transactions page.
  3. Locate the game and use the self-refund option shown for that transaction.
  4. Confirm the refund destination and retain the confirmation.

Refundable purchase requiring support

  1. Open Epic Player Support while signed in to the purchasing account.
  2. Select the transaction and explain whether the request is a normal policy refund, a defect, or a misdescription.
  3. Include the order details, download or runtime information, and evidence of the problem.
  4. Follow the support team’s instructions and keep the case number.

For PC and Mac early-access or beta versions, Epic states that less than two hours of runtime is required for the stated rule. A purchase made through a console store or another third-party checkout is governed by that seller, not Epic’s store policy.

How to request a PlayStation Store refund

Sony’s normal checklist for games and DLC requires both conditions: the request is made within 14 days and the content has not been downloaded or streamed. Starting a download or stream can therefore remove the ordinary eligibility route even if you have not launched the game.

  1. Use PlayStation’s refund assistant or open the account transaction-history process described on PlayStation Support.
  2. Sign in to the account that paid for the content.
  3. Select the transaction and answer the eligibility questions.
  4. State whether the content was downloaded or streamed and give the exact reason for the request.
  5. Submit the request and save the confirmation or case reference.

If the game or DLC is faulty, say so directly. Sony states that content failing the normal criteria may still be considered when it is faulty, and local consumer law may provide additional rights. A crash, missing advertised mode, or inability to access the purchased license is more useful evidence than a general statement that you changed your mind.

How to request a Nintendo eShop refund in the United States

Nintendo of America’s policy takes a stricter position than the other stores described here: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.”

Nintendo eShop Physical Gift Card | $100

  • It's easy—apply it to your Nintendo eShop account in seconds.

Expect a denial if you merely dislike a game after downloading it. You can still contact Nintendo Account support when the transaction was unauthorized, the wrong product was supplied, the content is unavailable, or consumer law applies. Give the order number, account, date, and a factual description of the defect or mismatch. Do not describe a technical failure as a preference complaint, because that can send the request into the wrong policy category.

How to approach an Xbox refund

A current Xbox-specific deadline, playtime threshold, and exact workflow were not established from an official page in the available material. Do not copy Steam’s 14-day/two-hour rule to Xbox.

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
  2. Open the account’s purchase history and start the refund request for the game.
  3. Read the regional terms displayed in that live flow, including any download, playtime, or timing limits.
  4. Describe defects, missing content, or an unauthorized charge with supporting evidence.
  5. Save the submission and any response before trying another escalation route.

If the checkout occurred through a console manufacturer or another retailer rather than Microsoft, submit the request to the party shown on the receipt.

When consumer law gives you additional rights

Store policies are not always the final word. Your country, the seller’s location, the type of defect, and whether you accepted immediate digital delivery can change the remedy.

United Kingdom

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies quality, fitness-for-purpose, and description requirements to digital content such as games. When content is faulty, the trader generally gets an opportunity to repair or replace it. If that remedy is unavailable or fails, you can seek a price reduction or refund. The statutory timing says a refund must be paid “without undue delay, and in any event within 14 days” after the trader agrees that you are entitled to it.

In a UK request, identify the statutory problem as well as the store-policy problem: for example, “The game repeatedly crashes before the advertised opening sequence and does not conform to its description.” Ask for repair or replacement where appropriate, then request the price reduction or refund if that remedy is unavailable or unsuccessful. Keep proof of when you notified the trader and when entitlement was accepted.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

European Union

EU guidance recognizes a legal guarantee for digital content such as video games when it is faulty, not as advertised, or does not work as expected. The 14-day withdrawal right can be lost once downloading or streaming begins if you expressly consented to immediate performance and acknowledged losing that right. National implementation and complaint procedures vary, so identify your country and the legal seller before relying on a specific form or deadline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A defect claim is different from withdrawal. If a game crashes or lacks promised features, document the failure and request the remedy required by your national implementation even if you already downloaded it.

Google Play and other digital-content sellers

Google Play’s EEA and UK guidance explains that digital-content remedies depend on timing. A refund or alternative remedy is generally unavailable unless the content is defective, unavailable, or does not perform as stated. If Google Play processed the payment, use its transaction and support process; if another store processed it, that seller’s policy controls.

Write a clear refund request

Use a short, factual message. Avoid exaggeration, threats, or an unsupported claim that a game is illegal. This template can be adapted to the platform’s form:

Subject: Refund request for [game title], order [order number]

I am requesting a [refund/replacement/other remedy] for [game title], purchased on [date] through [platform] using account [account identifier].

Reason: [faulty / does not perform as advertised / wrong version / unauthorized purchase / within the platform’s change-of-mind window].

Use history: The game was [downloaded/streamed/launched] and played for approximately [time].

Problem: [Describe the reproducible crash, error message, missing feature, access failure, or listing mismatch. Include dates and steps that reproduce it.]

Attached are the receipt and [screenshots, recording, error log, or listing evidence]. Please confirm the applicable policy reason and process the remedy to [original payment method/available destination].

Only include facts you can support. If the store asks for troubleshooting, complete reasonable steps while the case remains inside the deadline, and record each result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the seller rejects the request

Ask for the exact reason

Reply once, calmly, asking which condition caused the denial: elapsed time, playtime, download or stream status, excluded product type, or a finding that no defect was shown. Correct a factual error with the receipt or evidence and request review by the formal escalation team.

Escalate through the available consumer route

Use the seller’s published complaint process first. In the UK, a consumer-advice or trading-standards route may help explain the Consumer Rights Act position. In the EU, contact the relevant national consumer authority or an approved dispute-resolution service identified for your country. Keep the original ticket, the denial, and your evidence together.

Use a payment dispute carefully

Do not begin with a card chargeback when the seller has an available refund process. An unjustified chargeback can create an account or payment dispute and may interrupt access to purchased services. Consider a payment dispute only after documenting the seller’s response and when your payment provider’s rules recognize the circumstances, such as an unauthorized transaction or failure to deliver the purchased content.

Special cases that need separate handling

DLC, expansions, and season passes

Check whether the platform treats downloadable content as a separate transaction. PlayStation’s normal checklist expressly covers games and DLC, while Steam and Epic may apply different rules to add-ons, bundles, or consumed content. List every affected order rather than assuming a base-game refund automatically includes its add-ons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscriptions, consumables, and virtual currency

Epic generally excludes subscriptions, in-app purchases, in-game items, consumables, and virtual currency unless law requires otherwise. Steam’s 48-hour rule for qualifying, unconsumed purchases in Valve-developed games is narrower than a full-game policy. State whether any item was used, altered, or transferred.

Pre-orders and early access

Epic’s product label controls whether a purchase is self-refundable or requires support, and its PC/Mac early-access or beta rule uses less than two hours of runtime. Nintendo’s US policy specifically includes pre-purchases among payments that are ordinarily final. Check the store’s current terms before release or before downloading a pre-ordered title.

How to improve the chance of a fair decision

  • Submit as soon as you know there is a problem; do not wait for a patch if the platform deadline is close.
  • Use the account that made the purchase and provide the order number exactly as shown.
  • Separate preference from defect: explain what fails, when it fails, and how to reproduce it.
  • Report download, stream, launch, and playtime honestly; stores can verify these records.
  • Request one appropriate remedy and identify the destination you prefer where the platform permits a choice.
  • Keep every confirmation, response, screenshot, and date in one case file.

The practical rule is simple: a disappointing game may qualify only under a store’s limited change-of-mind window, while a game that is faulty, unavailable, or materially misdescribed can trigger stronger platform or legal remedies. Identify the seller, preserve evidence, and use the policy and consumer-law route that matches your country and the actual problem.
