Request a digital-game refund from the storefront that charged you—not from the console maker or publisher in general. Confirm the account, purchase date, download or play status, and product type, then use that store’s official transaction or support workflow. Submit promptly, keep the order ID, and describe defects or unauthorized charges accurately.
Policies differ sharply. Steam publishes a 14-day and under-two-hour rule; PlayStation’s ordinary policy generally requires no download or streaming; Nintendo US treats digital payments as final except in limited circumstances; Xbox and Microsoft Store requests undergo an eligibility review; and Epic labels eligible products as refundable while directing console purchases back to the console store. Consumer-law rights may add remedies beyond a commercial policy, depending on your location.
Start with the storefront that took your payment
The company whose logo appears on the console is not always the seller. A game bought through PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop, Steam, or Epic Games Store must normally be handled by that storefront. A code redeemed on a platform follows the platform’s rules, while a purchase made through a console’s third-party mobile or online store follows that seller’s rules.
Identify the account and transaction
- Check the email receipt, bank or card statement, and each gaming account you use.
- Record the order or transaction ID, title, edition, add-ons, currency, and purchase date.
- Confirm whether the charge was for a full game, downloadable content (DLC), a season pass, subscription, in-app purchase, consumable, or virtual currency.
Check the facts that control eligibility
Before opening a form, note whether the content was downloaded, streamed, installed, or played; whether another account used family or library sharing; and whether the charge is duplicated or unauthorized. These details determine which rule applies and let support distinguish an accidental purchase from a technical failure.

A universal refund-request process
- Locate the seller. Open the purchase history for the account that paid. If the transaction is missing, check other accounts, family organizers, and receipts before contacting support.
- Check the product category. Full games often have different treatment from DLC, subscriptions, consumables, and virtual currency. Do not assume a game policy covers an in-game item.
- Check timing and use. Compare the purchase date with the store’s deadline and record download, streaming, and playtime status. Steam counts online, offline, and shared-library playtime; other stores use different tests.
- Open the official workflow. Select the exact transaction rather than submitting a general complaint. The platform can then apply the correct policy and payment record.
- State the factual reason. Use a short description such as accidental purchase, non-functioning content, duplicate charge, or unauthorized payment. For a defect, include the error, affected device, and troubleshooting already attempted.
- Save proof. Keep the confirmation number, screenshots, receipt, and correspondence. Do not treat an automated submission or “eligible” label as an approval; wait for the platform’s decision.
PlayStation Store
Ordinary eligibility rule
For games, DLC, and season passes, Sony’s ordinary checklist generally requires both conditions below:
- The request is made within 14 days of purchase.
- The content has not been downloaded or streamed.
Sony’s support wording is explicit: Content has not been downloaded or streamed.
That makes PlayStation one of the most restrictive stores once a title has been obtained or played. A download can therefore block the standard route even when the request is made within 14 days.
How to submit
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that made the purchase.
- Open Sony’s refund eligibility checker or the transaction-history and support route.
- Identify the game, DLC, or season pass and select the reason for the request.
- Explain any malfunction, duplicate charge, or unauthorized transaction in the description.
- Submit the request and retain the reference number and screenshots.
Faulty content and local law
Sony says faulty content may be covered even though the ordinary checklist is download-gated. Describe the defect precisely rather than presenting it as a routine change-of-mind request. Sony also states that local law may provide additional rights. If the standard checker declines a downloaded but defective game, keep the denial and error evidence for a follow-up with support or the consumer-protection route available in your jurisdiction.

Xbox and Microsoft Store
Xbox console purchases
Xbox customers use Microsoft’s digital-game refund request process. The form evaluates eligibility for the particular transaction, so a request is not guaranteed merely because the game was recently bought. Select the purchase from the Microsoft account order history, identify the Xbox title, and give a factual explanation.

Windows PC games bought from Microsoft Store
A Windows game purchased from Microsoft Store belongs in the Microsoft account order-history and refund flow, not in Steam or Epic’s support system. Use the account that paid, select the relevant order, and distinguish a game license from an add-on or subscription when the form asks for the item.
Processing and statutory rights
Microsoft says approved refunds are generally processed within 3–5 business days to the original payment option. The time describes processing after approval, not the time required for Microsoft to decide. Microsoft’s terms also say the commercial policy operates alongside statutory withdrawal rights. A policy denial therefore does not automatically eliminate a lawful claim under the consumer rules that apply where you live.
Nintendo eShop
What the US policy says
Nintendo US states that payments through Nintendo Account services—including pre-purchases and subscriptions—are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. Its wording is: all payments … are final and non-refundable
. There is no Steam-style published trial period in this policy.
This is the Nintendo US policy. Other regions can have different statutory rights or store terms, so do not apply the US statement automatically to an account registered elsewhere.

How to contact Nintendo
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account used for the transaction.
- Gather the transaction ID, title, purchase date, console, and payment details shown on the receipt.
- Contact Nintendo support and explain whether the request concerns an accidental purchase, a defect, a duplicate charge, or an unauthorized payment.
- Attach or retain screenshots and the support case number.
Nintendo may authorize a refund in an individual case, but the policy does not promise approval after download or play. If local law gives you a withdrawal, conformity, or digital-content remedy, state that basis clearly and provide the requested proof.
Steam on PC
The standard 14-day/two-hour rule
Valve publishes the clearest general rule for digital games: Valve will … issue a refund for any title that is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than 2 hours.
The two-hour calculation includes online play, offline play, and play from a shared library. Both limits matter: a request after 14 days or at two hours or more falls outside the automatic standard, even if the other condition is met.
Exact request path
- Sign in at Steam Support.
- Choose Purchases.
- Select the game or other transaction.
- Choose the problem that best describes the situation.
- Select I’d like to request a refund.
- Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method when offered, explain the reason, and submit the form.
Timing and exceptions
Valve says an approved refund can take up to seven days. Steam Wallet credit may appear in 24–48 hours, while a card or other original method can take longer under the payment provider’s processing rules. You may still submit a request outside 14 days or after two hours for manual review; Valve does not guarantee approval in those cases. Explain a reproducible defect, accidental purchase, or other exceptional fact instead of claiming that the normal rule was met when it was not.

Epic Games Store on PC
Which Epic purchases are usually refundable
Epic’s policy generally marks paid games as self-refundable or refundable when the product’s transaction page provides that option. Open the Epic account transaction or support flow, select the purchase, and check the product’s displayed eligibility before submitting.

Epic generally excludes subscriptions, in-app purchases, consumables, and virtual currency unless applicable law requires a refund. A label on the individual transaction controls more reliably than a general assumption about the store.
Console and third-party purchases
A purchase made on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or a third-party mobile store is governed by that store’s policy, even if the game or account is associated with Epic. Send the request to the point of purchase; Epic cannot substitute for the seller that processed the payment.
How to submit an Epic request
- Sign in to the Epic account that paid.
- Open the transaction history or Epic support contact flow.
- Select the specific game and inspect whether it is marked refundable or self-refundable.
- Describe the reason, including a defect or unauthorized charge when applicable.
- Submit and save the case confirmation. The policy summary does not state a universal processing time, so rely on the confirmation and follow-up messages for that transaction.

Handling common problem cases
The game is broken or will not run
Choose a defect or non-functioning-content reason, not “I changed my mind.” Record the platform model, operating-system or console version, error code, date of the failure, and steps that reproduce it. Include screenshots or video if the form accepts them. PlayStation specifically says faulty content may be covered; on every platform, a clear defect description gives support a factual basis for an exception or statutory remedy.
The charge was unauthorized
Report an unauthorized transaction promptly through the storefront account that was billed. Change the account password, enable available two-factor authentication, and review saved payment methods and family-account access. Tell support that you did not authorize the charge and preserve the bank or card record. If the platform cannot resolve confirmed fraud, ask your payment provider about its dispute process; do not represent a payment-provider chargeback as a platform refund.

You bought the wrong edition, DLC, or an in-game item
Identify exactly what was delivered. A full-game rule may not apply to a season pass, subscription, consumable, virtual currency, or DLC. Nintendo’s US policy expressly includes pre-purchases and subscriptions among generally final payments, while Epic generally excludes subscriptions, in-app purchases, consumables, and virtual currency. Steam and PlayStation also require you to select the specific transaction, so do not bundle unrelated items into one explanation.
The normal deadline or usage limit has passed
You can still submit a truthful request where the store permits manual review. Explain the exceptional fact—such as a severe, documented defect or an unauthorized charge—and attach evidence. Do not claim under-two-hour playtime, no download, or another condition that is not true. A request outside the published rule is discretionary unless local law gives you a separate entitlement.
After you submit
Track the decision, not just the form
Keep the confirmation number and monitor the account email and transaction history. An automated message may acknowledge receipt without approving the refund. For Microsoft, the stated 3–5 business days applies to an approved refund reaching the original payment option. For Steam, allow up to seven days after approval, with Wallet credit potentially appearing in 24–48 hours.

Read the stated reason and check whether the denial reflects the wrong account, an incorrect product category, a download or play threshold, or a missing defect explanation. Reply through the same case with the order ID and new evidence rather than opening contradictory cases. If the issue concerns faulty digital content or an unauthorized payment, review the consumer-law and payment-provider remedies available in your country or state; exact rights depend on jurisdiction.
What no platform comparison can promise
There is no reliable universal approval rate, refund-success percentage, or cross-platform average processing time established for these stores. Eligibility depends on the storefront, region, product type, account history, use of the content, and the reason supplied. Treat each policy as a decision framework, submit accurate evidence quickly, and wait for the seller’s confirmation before assuming money will be returned.
