Request the refund from the storefront that processed your payment—not usually from the game developer. Describe a specific, reproducible defect, explain why the game is unusable or materially different from its description, and attach your receipt, timing details, screenshots, recordings, and error messages.
Steam and Epic have a familiar short-playtime, short-window baseline for eligible PC purchases. PlayStation, Nintendo, and mobile stores use different rules. A request outside a standard policy window can still be worth escalating when the digital content is faulty, unavailable as described, or materially misdescribed, but the outcome depends on the storefront and the law governing the transaction.
Start with the payment channel
The company that collected the money normally controls the refund workflow. If you bought a game directly through Steam, use Steam Support. If you bought it through the Epic Games Store, use Epic’s account and support tools. A console purchase belongs with the relevant console store, even when the game itself was made by a different company.

Developers may be able to document a defect or confirm that a server is unavailable, but they generally cannot reverse a transaction processed by another store. Contacting the developer can be useful for technical evidence; it is not a substitute for filing with the payment storefront.

Identify the transaction before you write
- Check the receipt, order confirmation, bank statement, or account purchase history.
- Record the storefront, account, platform or device, game edition, and transaction ID.
- Confirm whether the purchase was a full game, downloadable content, a pre-purchase, an in-game purchase, or a subscription.
- Note the purchase date, first launch, first failure, approximate playtime, and whether you downloaded, streamed, or preloaded the content.
Platform rules at a glance
The table shows the ordinary policy position described by each store. “Faulty-content route” means the policy or support guidance expressly leaves room to argue that a defect is different from simply changing your mind. Statutory rights vary by the country or state connected to the transaction.

What counts as a strong faulty-game request?
Stores need a concrete reason to depart from a routine “I no longer want this” request. A useful claim connects the advertised or promised experience to a reproducible failure:
- The game crashes at a repeatable point, such as the opening sequence or a specific menu.
- A required feature advertised for the purchased edition is absent or unusable.
- The game cannot launch, authenticate, save, or connect to a required service under supported conditions.
- A major defect makes the purchased content materially different from its description.
- An unfinished release is so incomplete that the playable state does not match what was represented at purchase.
“The game is a scam” is not evidence. “The game closes with error code 0x____ immediately after selecting New Game on [device], and the attached recording shows the same result three times” gives support something verifiable to review. Be accurate about what you tried and what you observed.
Build your evidence before submitting
Preserve transaction records
Save the order confirmation, receipt, transaction ID, purchase date, account name or identifier, and the exact storefront. If the purchase was bundled, identify the bundle and the individual item that is defective. Keep copies outside the game account in case access is later restricted.

Capture the defect
- Write down the exact error text or crash code.
- Take screenshots that show the error, missing feature, or misleading store description.
- Record a short video of the reproducible failure when a still image cannot show it.
- Note the game version, operating system or console model, hardware, network state, and relevant settings.
- Keep crash logs or support-generated diagnostics when the platform provides them.
Create a short timeline
List the purchase date, first launch, first failure, troubleshooting steps, any update or reinstall, and previous contacts with support. Include approximate playtime and whether the game was downloaded, streamed, or preloaded. A timeline helps support distinguish a launch defect from a long period of ordinary use.
Submit the request on each major storefront
Steam
- Open Steam Help and select the purchase from your account history.
- Choose the refund option and select the payment method or destination offered by Steam.
- State that the request concerns a materially faulty or unusable game, then identify the exact reproducible defect.
- Include the transaction date, playtime, game version, error details, and attached evidence.
If the automated route declines the request because it falls outside the normal baseline, submit a support ticket through the same storefront and ask for human review under the faulty-content guidance and any consumer rights that apply.
Epic Games Store
- Open your account’s Transactions area and inspect the product’s label.
- For a self-refundable item, use the displayed self-service refund control.
- For another eligible item, contact Epic support and provide the transaction ID and evidence.
- If the payment was made in a console or separate mobile store, stop using Epic’s form and contact that store instead.
For an eligible pre-purchase, explain whether the problem appeared after release and identify the release date in your timeline. Do not treat an Epic purchase label as a promise that every defect case will be accepted; it describes the routine route.

PlayStation Store
- Open the PlayStation refund assistant or the support flow connected to the purchasing account.
- Identify the game or downloadable content and the purchase date.
- Say plainly that the content is faulty if that is the reason for the request.
- Describe the defect, the console and software version, and what happens when you attempt to use the content.
- Attach evidence and explain whether the content was downloaded or streamed.
The normal checklist treats downloading or streaming as significant, but support guidance also points to additional local-law rights for faulty content. Therefore, do not disguise a defect claim as a change-of-mind request; present the facts under the category that actually fits.

Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Account services
- Contact Nintendo support for the account that made the payment.
- Provide the receipt or transaction ID, purchase date, system, title, and software version.
- Explain the specific defect and attach screenshots, recordings, or error information.
- Ask support to review the request as faulty or misdescribed digital content and identify any legal right you believe applies in your jurisdiction.
Because Nintendo US describes digital payments as final unless Nintendo or applicable law provides an exception, an automatic approval should not be expected. A factual, well-documented request is still the appropriate first step.
Google Play and other mobile stores
Use the account and store that actually charged you. Refund decisions can depend on the item, purchase type, timing, and region. In the EEA and UK, guidance explains that immediate digital delivery can follow an acknowledgement that automatic statutory withdrawal rights are waived. That rule concerns the withdrawal mechanism; it does not let you assume that every faulty-content question has the same answer. Describe the defect and check the consumer rules for the country connected to the transaction.
Use a concise, evidence-led explanation
You can adapt this wording without making a legal conclusion you cannot support:

Replace every bracketed item with precise facts. If you tried a reinstall, update, cache clear, or other troubleshooting step, list it briefly and state whether it changed the result. Do not claim that a game is unfinished merely because you disliked its design; connect the claim to an advertised feature, stated release condition, or inability to use the purchased content.

Ask for human review through the same store
Submit a support ticket rather than opening unrelated duplicate cases. Repeat the transaction identifier, defect description, timeline, and evidence. Point out which ordinary condition caused the automated rejection—for example, recorded playtime, download status, or elapsed time—and explain why the request concerns faulty content instead of a change of mind.
Check the governing jurisdiction
Consumer protections are not universal. The relevant law may depend on where you live, where the seller is established, or another rule governing the transaction. Look for the consumer-protection authority or a reputable legal-aid resource serving that jurisdiction. Use that source to determine whether digital content must be fit for purpose, match its description, or be remedied when defective. Do not present a rule from one country or state as a worldwide guarantee.
Consider a payment dispute only after understanding the risk
A chargeback or other payment dispute can have account consequences, including restrictions on the store account or future purchases. It is not a risk-free replacement for the store’s support process. Before taking that step, preserve the store correspondence and obtain jurisdiction-specific guidance about your rights and the possible consequences.

Common situations and the right framing
“I downloaded the game and then found the bug”
Downloading can affect an ordinary refund request, particularly on stores whose routine checklist requires no download or streaming. It does not automatically answer every faulty-content question. State what failed, when it failed, and why the content cannot deliver the experience described.
“The game is unfinished at launch”
Use observable facts: missing promised modes, an inaccessible campaign, persistent crashes, or a clearly stated feature that is not present. Include the store-page wording or release representation in your evidence. Avoid broad accusations about the developer’s intent.
“I played longer than the normal limit while troubleshooting”
Report the actual playtime and explain why it accumulated, such as repeated launches, testing fixes, or waiting through crashes. Do not hide the figure. Ask for an exception review based on the defect and attach the timeline showing that the additional time was not normal enjoyment of a working product.

Distinguish a temporary service outage from a persistent defect in the purchased software. Record the date, duration, error message, and any official service notice. If the game requires online services, explain how the outage prevents the advertised use and whether the failure continues after service restoration.
A practical decision checklist
- Was the payment processed by the store you are contacting?
- Can you describe one reproducible defect instead of a general complaint?
- Do you have the receipt, transaction ID, purchase date, and account details?
- Have you recorded the game version, device, error text, screenshots, and a short video where useful?
- Have you included playtime, download, preload, or streaming facts?
- Did you separate a routine policy request from a faulty-content request?
- Have you identified the country or state whose consumer law may apply?
- If refused, did you request human review before considering a payment dispute?
What to expect from the process
A store may approve, deny, or ask for more information. Approval under a routine policy is different from an exception based on a defect. The store may return funds to the original payment method or offer another method according to its policy. Keep the case number and written decision.
The most persuasive submission is narrow and verifiable: one transaction, one clearly described failure, a short timeline, and evidence that lets support reproduce or understand the problem. That approach gives you the best chance of a fair review without overstating what any storefront or local law guarantees.
