To finish signing in to your Apple Account, enter the six-digit verification code Apple displays on a trusted device or sends to a trusted phone number. If a trusted device is with you but offline, you can generate a code in its account security settings. If you cannot access any trusted device or number, start Apple Account recovery instead.
Get a code on a trusted device
- Start signing in to your Apple Account on the new device or in a browser, using your password.
- Check a trusted iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or other eligible trusted device for the sign-in notification. Approve the sign-in.
- Read the six-digit code displayed on the trusted device and enter it on the device or browser where you are signing in.
Apple describes this as a six-digit code that is automatically displayed on trusted devices or sent to a trusted phone number. The approximate location shown in a sign-in notification may be based on the new device’s IP address or network; it is not necessarily its precise physical location. Generate a code on an offline trusted device
If you are already signed in to a trusted Apple device, it can generate a verification code even without an internet connection. Open the account’s security settings and choose the option to get or generate a code. Menu labels vary by operating-system version; not every device shows the same wording.
- iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in older Apple instructions: Settings > [your name] > Password & Security > Get Verification Code.
- Older Mac versions: System Preferences > Apple ID or iCloud > Account Details > Security.
- Newer versions: Look in your Apple Account’s Sign-In & Security settings for the verification-code option. Apple Support: Use two-factor authentication for your Apple Account on iPhone
Request a code by text or phone call
If you cannot use a trusted device, request delivery to a trusted phone number from the sign-in screen. A trusted number does not automatically receive a code simply because it is listed on your account.

- At the verification-code screen, select Didn’t get a code? or the equivalent option indicating you cannot access your devices.
- Choose an available trusted phone number.
- Choose text message or automated phone call, then enter the code you receive.
If a requested text does not arrive, check filtered-message or unknown-sender folders. Apple’s sign-in guidance explains the device and phone-delivery options: Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication.
Choose the route that matches what you can access

If you have lost access to every trusted device and number
If you expect to regain access to a trusted device or number soon, Apple says waiting may be the quickest option. If you have permanently lost access, choose Can’t use [phone number] from the code screen and begin account recovery. Apple says recovery can take a few days or longer, depending on the account information available, and contacting Apple Support cannot shorten the wait. Do not confuse the sign-in code with other Apple credentials
- Verification code: Six digits, used with your account password to complete a sign-in challenge.
- Recovery key: A separate 28-character credential for account recovery. Enabling one turns off Apple’s standard account-recovery process; losing it can permanently lock you out. Keep it offline in a safe place and do not enable it casually. Apple Support: Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account
- Recovery contact code: A designated recovery contact can provide a code during account recovery. It is not the usual two-factor sign-in code. Apple Support: Set up a recovery contact for your Apple Account
- App-specific password: A password used by certain third-party apps, not a two-factor verification code. Apple Support: Use two-factor authentication for your Apple Account on iPhone
