If it’s available, sign up and enable the requested email or app notifications. If there’s no retailer alert, a third-party tracker may help—but check that it supports the specific store and item. An alert is not a reservation, so the item may sell out again before you can order.
Sign up for the retailer’s restock alert
- Open the exact product listing. Sign in if the retailer requires an account.
- Look for a control such as “Notify me,” “Notify me when it’s back,” or an availability alert on the product page or in the retailer’s app.
- If the option is offered, enter the requested details or confirm the signup. Check that email notifications are allowed, or enable app notifications if that is the chosen channel.
- When a message arrives, open the product listing and check availability and ordering details. The alert may arrive after stock has already run out.
The option may not appear for every sold-out item. Target, for example, says shoppers must sign in; website signups receive email, while signups in the Target app receive push notifications. Its feature does not apply to store inventory, and exclusions can apply to high-demand or limited items. See Target Help’s notification guidance for its policy.
What a restock alert does—and does not—mean
A notification tells you that the retailer detected availability according to its system; it does not hold the product for you or guarantee that you can complete an order. Target explicitly cautions: “Opting in to receive notifications doesn’t reserve or guarantee item availability, so you may want to act fast in the event the item goes out of stock again.” Treat the alert as a prompt to check the listing, not as a reservation.
If the retailer has no alert option
You can consider a cross-retailer stock-monitoring service. Is In Stock describes email and desktop push alerts for products across retailers and claims coverage of “10,000+ retailers”; that is the service’s own claim, and the page does not state a year for the figure. Verify that the service currently covers the exact retailer and item before relying on it. Its advertised coverage does not establish that every listing is monitored. See Is In Stock.

Before signing up, check what it monitors, which notification channels it supports, and whether you need an account. Also confirm that the alert is for the correct item variant, such as size, color, or pack quantity. A notification about a different listing may not help you place the order you want.
Why alerts and channels vary
Retailers decide whether to offer alerts and which products qualify. Merchant-side back-in-stock software can support email, SMS, or push, but that describes what a merchant’s tool can do—not what a particular retailer offers its shoppers. For example, Notify Me!’s merchant guide describes those channels and says SMS and WhatsApp messages have per-message costs that vary by country. Its setup guide says alerts trigger when inventory reaches a configured threshold, one by default; a single-unit restock can sell out immediately. Troubleshoot a missing or unhelpful alert
- No alert control appears: The retailer may not offer alerts for that item, or the item may be excluded. Check the product page and app, and consult the retailer’s own help information.
- You signed up but received nothing: Check spam or junk mail, verify the email address, and confirm that the retailer’s messages are not blocked. For app alerts, check the device’s notification permissions and the app’s settings.
- The alert is for the wrong product: Reopen the exact listing and check its variant, size, color, and quantity before signing up with a third-party tracker.
- The product is unavailable when you arrive: Stock can be limited, and notifications do not reserve an item. Refresh the listing and check whether the retailer offers another alert signup.
- A tracker does not list the store or item: Do not assume general retailer coverage includes that listing. Confirm current support with the service before depending on it.
