To help Google index a page, make sure Google can crawl it, remove any unintended indexing blocks, link to it from a page Google can find, and submit its canonical URL in a sitemap. Then inspect the URL in Google Search Console and request indexing if the page is new or has changed. None of these steps guarantees inclusion: crawling and indexing are separate, and Google decides which crawled pages to add to Search.
What indexing means—and what you can control
Google first discovers URLs and may crawl them, meaning it fetches their content. It then analyzes crawled pages to decide whether to include them in its index. A page can be discovered or crawled without being indexed; Google says plainly that indexing is not guaranteed. See Google’s guide to how Search works.
You can improve discovery and remove technical obstacles, but you cannot force Google to index a URL or promise when it will do so. Search Console, internal links, sitemaps, and indexing requests are aids for communicating with Google and diagnosing problems—not guarantees.
Step 1: Check whether Google has indexed the page
A quick Google search for the page or your site can give you a preliminary indication, but a site: query is not a complete inventory. Google recommends checking both the www and non-www versions of a site when investigating indexing. For a specific URL, use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool for the more useful diagnostic view.

Step 2: Verify your site and inspect the exact URL
Add and verify your site in Google Search Console, then inspect the page’s preferred, canonical URL—not just a similar URL or an alternate version. URL Inspection can show whether Google can fetch the page, information about its last crawl, the declared and selected canonical, and reported indexing exclusions. Google’s Search getting-started guide explains how to use Search Console and check how Google sees a page.
If Google reports a problem, use the details to identify what to fix before asking for another crawl. For example, a blocked URL, a noindex directive, or a canonical pointing elsewhere calls for a different correction.
Step 3: Remove unintended crawl and indexing blocks
Check both the page and the paths Google needs to fetch it. Review robots.txt for rules that block Googlebot from the URL or resources needed to render the page. Also check the page’s HTML <meta name="robots"> tag and HTTP response headers for a noindex instruction.

These controls do different jobs. robots.txt regulates crawling; it is not a reliable way to remove a URL from Search. If you want Google to honor noindex, Google must be able to crawl the page and read that directive. Do not block the page in robots.txt while relying on its noindex tag to exclude it. Google explains these distinctions in its guides to robots.txt and blocking indexing with noindex.

If the content is private, use authentication or password protection rather than treating a robots.txt rule as access control. If the page should appear in Search, remove an unintended noindex instruction, make sure crawling is allowed, and then request a new crawl.
Step 4: Make the page discoverable through links
Add a normal, crawlable link to the page from another page on your site that Google can already find. Use an <a href="..."> link with descriptive text so both users and crawlers can understand where it leads. Googlebot discovers URLs by following links as well as by parsing sitemaps.

Navigation or content that exists only through a JavaScript interaction, or content without its own URL, can make discovery more complicated. Google’s overview of crawling and indexing and developer guide describe how Google finds and processes pages.
Step 5: Publish and submit a clean sitemap
A sitemap explicitly lists URLs you want Google to know about. Include the canonical version of each page and leave out URLs you do not want indexed. Many content-management systems generate sitemaps automatically; check your platform before creating one yourself.
Submit the sitemap in Search Console and review any processing errors. Submission is a hint, not a promise that Google will fetch the sitemap, crawl every listed URL, index those pages, or rank them. Google’s instructions are in Build and submit a sitemap.

Sitemaps and internal links are complementary: the sitemap names canonical URLs, while crawlable links help Google discover pages and understand how they fit into your site. Use both where appropriate.
Step 6: Request indexing for important new or updated pages
Once the page is accessible and its problems are fixed, use URL Inspection in Search Console to request indexing for a small number of important new or updated URLs. Submit or update your sitemap as well. A request tells Google the page is ready for another look; it does not guarantee an immediate crawl or inclusion in the index.

Check the Page Indexing report and the URL Inspection details, then investigate the reason rather than repeatedly resubmitting the same URL. Google can reach a page but still decide not to index it, and a page may look fine in a browser while failing to fetch or render correctly for Google.

- URL Inspection says the page is blocked: Check robots.txt, authentication, firewall or CDN rules, and the server response.
- Google detects noindex: Remove the directive if the page should appear, ensure robots.txt allows Google to recrawl it, and request a new crawl.
- Crawled but not indexed: Review whether the page offers meaningful, visible content, is distinct from other pages, has the right canonical, or resembles a soft 404. Being crawled does not mean Google will index it.
- The page is new or has few links: Link to it from pages Google can already find and include its canonical URL in your sitemap.
- The page returns an error or loads unreliably: Review HTTP responses and server logs. Server problems can affect Googlebot’s crawling.
- The page has moved or is gone: If there is a clear replacement, use a 301 redirect. If the page is permanently gone without a replacement, return a real 404 or 410 response. A soft 404 can occur when a page shows an error or empty content but returns HTTP 200.
- The site has moved: Preserve redirects and follow Google’s site-move guidance; check Search Console verification and migration signals.
For rendering or crawl errors, inspect the HTML Google receives and the rendered result, not just the page as it appears to you. Blocked resources and JavaScript implementation can affect what Google can process. Google’s crawling-error troubleshooting guide covers technical diagnosis.
Step 8: Wait, monitor, and revisit the diagnosis
Do not assume that indexing will happen the same day or keep resubmitting an unchanged sitemap. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says most sites should expect indexing to take three days or more; this is general operational guidance, not a measured average or a deadline. Google also says it cannot generally predict or guarantee when—or whether—a URL will be crawled or indexed. Monitor Search Console and your server logs, and investigate again if the page remains excluded. See Google’s troubleshooting guide and crawling and indexing FAQ.
