The most reliable way to improve Squadron 42 performance is to find the limiting component before changing settings: confirm the game is on an SSD, use a stable graphics driver, test Vulkan against DirectX 11, let shader compilation finish, then tune upscaling and the settings that stress your GPU and VRAM. Start from the current requirements rather than assuming a new graphics card is necessary. The current Steam listing sets a floor of Windows 11, 16GB of RAM, 8GB of VRAM, DirectX 12 and 150GB of free storage; Roberts Space Industries (RSI) additionally requires a 150GB-or-larger SSD and recommends at least 10GB of extra SSD space for the pagefile.
What does Squadron 42 require before you tune it?
Check the baseline first. A system below the stated floor can suffer from missing assets, paging, crashes or severe stutter that a graphics preset cannot fix.
| Requirement | Current published baseline | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 (Steam listing, current 2026 listing) | Install current Windows updates and confirm the game is not running on an unsupported older edition. |
| System memory | 16GB RAM minimum (Steam listing) | Check installed capacity and how much remains available while the game is running. |
| Graphics memory | 8GB VRAM minimum on a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card (Steam listing) | Verify dedicated VRAM, not just shared system memory. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 listed as a minimum requirement (Steam listing) | Keep the operating system and GPU driver current so the supported API path can initialize. |
| Storage | 150GB available (Steam listing) | Leave room for updates and temporary files instead of filling the drive to capacity. |
| Drive and pagefile | 150GB-or-larger SSD required; RSI recommends at least 10GB additional SSD space for the pagefile (RSI, 2025) | Use an SSD for both the installation and available paging headroom. |
The 150GB game-space figure and the 150GB SSD requirement are related but not identical: the latter describes the type and capacity of the drive, while the former is the free-space figure shown by Steam. If the existing disk is a hard drive or has little free space, storage is a prerequisite upgrade, not merely a loading-time luxury.

CPU-limited behavior
When one or more CPU threads are busy while GPU utilization is well below its limit, lowering resolution usually changes little. This is the situation in which Vulkan is worth testing first, because RSI’s graphics guide says its own testing found CPU performance should be better under Vulkan while most other aspects should be similar.
GPU-limited behavior
If GPU utilization is high and frame time falls when resolution or an upscaler’s quality is reduced, lower GPU-heavy effects or use a balanced upscaling mode. Volumetrics, clouds, shadows and reflections are sensible first targets because they can be expensive without requiring a complete preset change.
VRAM-limited behavior
RSI warns that settings exceeding available VRAM produce a flashing memory-warning bar. Treat that warning as a hard signal: reduce texture or other memory-intensive quality settings until it disappears, then retest. Continuing with the warning can turn an otherwise acceptable frame rate into hitching as data is moved in and out of memory.

Close unnecessary background applications and observe whether RAM usage approaches the installed capacity. Paging is much less disruptive on an SSD than on a hard disk, but it still indicates that capacity or workload should be addressed. A 32GB RAM upgrade is useful headroom for a machine at the 16GB floor that multitasks or pages heavily; it is not a guaranteed FPS increase.
What should I do with Windows and GPU drivers?
Use current stable releases, not experimental branches, and restart after system-level changes. RSI recommends avoiding beta or experimental GPU drivers and returning to the last known-good driver if a particular API version introduces crashes or instability.
- Install pending Windows updates, then reboot.
- Install the latest stable driver for the graphics card from its manufacturer. Do not select a beta or experimental branch solely because it is newer.
- Restart again after the driver installation so the graphics stack and shader caches start from a clean session.
- If problems begin immediately after the update, roll back to the previous driver that worked and compare the same game scene.
Do not change the driver, renderer and several quality options at the same time. A single-variable change makes it possible to tell whether a crash or stutter came from the driver, API or game settings.

Should I use Vulkan or DirectX 11?
Test both on your own system. Vulkan is the preferred first trial for a CPU-bound machine, while DirectX 11 is the fallback when Vulkan is unstable, stutters more or performs worse on a particular driver.
| Consideration | Vulkan | DirectX 11 |
|---|---|---|
| CPU-bound performance | RSI says CPU performance should be better under Vulkan in its testing. | May be slower in a CPU-limited scenario, but can still be the smoother option on a specific system. |
| Other performance aspects | RSI says most other aspects should be similar. | Use as a comparison path rather than assuming a universal winner. |
| Stability | Keep it when it is stable; troubleshoot or switch if it crashes, hangs or produces unusual stutter. | Useful fallback when Vulkan fails to initialize or is less reliable. |
| Shader behavior | Precompiles pipeline state objects (the shader cache) after a relevant first launch. | May follow a different cache path; judge by repeatable frame-time behavior on your system. |
| Driver compatibility | Use a stable driver and the last known-good version if an API update causes trouble. | Can provide a working path while the Vulkan issue is isolated. |
- Choose Vulkan in the game’s renderer setting and restart if prompted.
- Load the same mission area or repeatable scene each time. Record whether the game reaches the menu, whether it crashes and how frame time feels after caches finish.
- Allow the first-run shader process to complete before deciding Vulkan is slower.
- Repeat the same test with DirectX 11. Keep the path that is stable and produces the better sustained frame time, not merely the higher number during a short loading sequence.
Renderer choice is system-dependent. A higher average FPS is not useful if shader compilation, driver errors or crashes make the session unreliable.
Why does the game stutter after an update or setting change?
Vulkan can be compiling pipeline state objects (PSOs), also called the shader cache. RSI’s Alpha 3.23 notes say this first compilation after an update or graphics-setting change can take several minutes; letting it finish reduces runtime hitching.
- Launch the game after the update or renderer/quality change.
- Leave it open while the precompilation process runs, even if the initial scene appears unusually slow.
- Avoid repeatedly changing quality settings during this process. RSI notes that changing quality settings restarts compilation.
- Only judge normal gameplay after the compilation has completed. If the process never completes or the game crashes, reboot and test the last stable driver or DirectX 11 path.
Repeatedly changing settings creates a moving target: each change can invalidate or restart the cache, making it appear that every configuration stutters.
How should I use DLSS, FSR and TSR?
Use the upscaler to reduce GPU work while retaining an acceptable image. RSI documents DLSS, FSR and TSR options; the useful choice depends on which options your installation exposes, your hardware support and how much image softness or reconstruction artifacting you accept.
| Option | Best use | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS | Try when it is available and your hardware supports the presented mode. | Check fine detail, motion clarity and whether the reduction in GPU load is enough to change frame time. |
| FSR | Try as an alternative reconstruction path when available. | Compare edges, shimmering and distant detail with the same resolution and scene. |
| TSR | Use when it provides the best visual balance in your installation. | Check temporal ghosting and image stability during movement. |
- Start with a balanced or equivalent middle-quality mode rather than the most aggressive performance mode.
- Keep the renderer, resolution and other quality settings unchanged while comparing upscalers.
- Move to a lower quality mode only if the GPU remains the limiting component and the image is still acceptable.
- If the GPU is not saturated, an upscaler may not address the real bottleneck; return to CPU, VRAM and background-process checks.
Which graphics settings usually give the largest gains?
Lower the settings that dominate your measured bottleneck, one at a time. There is no official FPS table that identifies a universal best preset, so use frame-time behavior and the memory warning bar rather than assuming a preset will suit every PC.

Volumetrics and clouds
Reduce these first when GPU frame time is high. They can be visually expensive, especially in scenes with heavy atmosphere, and lowering them generally changes less of the game’s basic geometry than reducing every setting together.
Shadows
Lower shadow quality when GPU load remains high after upscaling. Test an outdoor and an indoor scene because the cost can vary with the number of lights and objects casting shadows.
Reflections
Reduce reflections if reflective surfaces coincide with long GPU frame times. Keep a note of the original setting so you can restore it after identifying the actual bottleneck.

Textures and VRAM-sensitive options
Prioritize the flashing VRAM warning over visual preference. If available VRAM is being exceeded, reduce memory-heavy settings until the warning is gone before adjusting effects for extra FPS.
Quality presets
Presets are useful for establishing a baseline, but they change several variables at once and can restart shader compilation. Use one to get running, then make individual changes for diagnosis.
Will moving Squadron 42 to an SSD improve performance?
An SSD is required by RSI and is the right place for the game and pagefile. It can improve loading and paging behavior, but the published material does not provide a guaranteed FPS percentage, so do not buy a drive expecting a fixed frame-rate uplift.

When an upgrade is justified
- The game is installed on a hard disk.
- The current SSD cannot hold the 150GB installation plus updates and at least 10GB of recommended pagefile headroom.
- Free space is so low that Windows and the game are constantly paging or updating.
Choosing capacity and compatibility
A 1TB NVMe SSD is a practical capacity target when the existing drive is too small or is a hard disk. Confirm the motherboard or laptop has the required M.2 slot, interface support, physical clearance and operating-system compatibility before buying. On systems without a compatible M.2 slot, use a supported SATA SSD rather than forcing an incompatible NVMe module.
- Back up important files and confirm the new drive is recognized by Windows.
- Install or move the game so its active files are on the SSD.
- Keep at least the recommended 10GB of additional SSD space available for the pagefile, plus ordinary room for updates.
- Reboot before retesting so the game and Windows begin with the new storage layout.
When should I upgrade RAM or the graphics card?
Upgrade only after monitoring identifies capacity as the limit. Hardware purchases should solve a measured constraint, not compensate for a renderer, driver or shader-cache problem.
RAM
Sixteen gigabytes is the published minimum. A 32GB RAM upgrade kit gives applications and the game more headroom when you multitask or observe heavy paging, but the available evidence does not establish a specific FPS gain. Check the motherboard or laptop’s supported memory type, maximum capacity and slot layout.
Graphics card and VRAM
The Steam minimum calls for 8GB of VRAM on a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card. Systems below that floor should first consider an 8GB-or-more-VRAM graphics card that is compatible with the power supply, case and motherboard. More VRAM addresses memory pressure; it does not automatically fix a CPU limit.
Storage
Storage is the least ambiguous prerequisite: use an SSD of at least 150GB and preserve the extra pagefile space RSI recommends. Capacity and latency improvements help loading and paging behavior, but no source establishes a guaranteed FPS percentage.
What should I do if Vulkan crashes or refuses to launch?
Use RSI’s Vulkan troubleshooting guidance, reboot after system changes and isolate the API from the driver. DirectX 11 is a legitimate comparison path while you investigate.

- Reboot Windows after changing the driver, renderer or major graphics settings.
- Confirm the GPU driver is a stable release; revert to the last known-good driver if the issue began after an update.
- Try DirectX 11 and reproduce the same scene. If it is stable, keep it temporarily while diagnosing Vulkan.
- Return to Vulkan with default or conservative settings and allow shader compilation to finish.
- Close unnecessary background programs and check CPU, GPU, VRAM and RAM usage for a separate resource bottleneck.
- If the failure remains reproducible, follow RSI’s official Vulkan troubleshooting article and submit the reproducible details through official support channels.
What is the safest complete tuning order?
Follow this sequence so each result is attributable and reversible.
- Compare your PC with the Steam and RSI requirements, including SSD capacity, free space and the 10GB pagefile recommendation.
- Close unnecessary applications and record whether the limit appears to be CPU, GPU, VRAM or RAM.
- Update Windows and install a stable GPU driver, then reboot.
- Test Vulkan and DirectX 11 separately in the same scene, allowing Vulkan’s first shader compilation to finish.
- Choose a balanced DLSS, FSR or TSR mode if the GPU is limiting performance.
- Lower volumetrics, clouds, shadows or reflections one at a time when GPU frame time remains high.
- Reduce VRAM-heavy settings immediately if the memory warning bar flashes.
- Move the installation and pagefile headroom to an SSD if the game is on a hard disk or the drive is too full.
- Only then consider a 32GB RAM kit or an 8GB-plus-VRAM graphics card, after confirming hardware compatibility.
- For unresolved Vulkan failures, use RSI’s troubleshooting and support channels with the driver version, renderer, repeatable steps and crash behavior.
How do I keep a stable configuration?
Save a short record of the renderer, driver version, resolution, upscaler mode and the few settings you changed. When a future update changes behavior, restore the last known-good combination, let shaders compile again and then compare one variable at a time. This prevents a cache rebuild, a driver change and a new quality preset from being mistaken for a single performance problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait for Squadron 42 shader compilation?
RSI’s Alpha 3.23 notes describe the first Vulkan PSO compilation after an update or graphics-setting change as taking several minutes. Leave the game open until it finishes; if it never completes, reboot and test the last stable driver or DirectX 11.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I run the game from an external SSD?
The published requirements establish that the game needs an SSD, but they do not specify external-drive performance or enclosure compatibility. Check that the connection remains stable under sustained load and that the drive has the required capacity and free pagefile space.
Why does lowering resolution sometimes barely change FPS?
That usually indicates the GPU is not the limiting component. Check CPU frame time, background processes and RAM or paging pressure, then compare Vulkan and DirectX 11 rather than lowering image quality further.
What information should I include in a Vulkan support report?
Provide the renderer selected, stable GPU-driver version, Windows version, hardware memory capacities, the repeatable scene or steps, and whether DirectX 11 works. Those details let support distinguish an API-specific failure from a general resource or installation problem.
