To improve action-camera footage in dim scenes, add light where practical, choose a frame rate suited to the movement, and balance shutter speed against image brightness. A longer exposure brightens each frame but blurs moving subjects; a shorter one preserves motion detail but can make footage darker or noisier. If stabilization makes blur look warped, compare the camera’s low-light stabilization mode with electronic stabilization (EIS) reduced or off.

Why low-light action footage looks blurry, noisy, or unstable

Brightness and motion detail compete

A camera gathers more light with a longer exposure, but anything moving during that exposure can smear across the frame. A shorter exposure captures motion more crisply, but lets in less light. The camera may compensate by increasing ISO, which can make image noise more visible. There is no single shutter setting that is best for every combination of movement and light.

Stabilization cannot undo blur already recorded

EIS corrects camera movement by analyzing and adjusting frames; it cannot restore detail lost to motion blur during exposure. When a long exposure blurs a frame, stabilization can make the remaining smear or distortion look unnatural. GoPro described this issue for HERO7 Black in its 2018 guidance, which also tied that camera’s changing stabilization behavior to scene light and camera motion (GoPro: How to Master HyperSmooth in Lowlight Conditions). That behavior is specific to HERO7 Black and the firmware context discussed there, not a promise about every GoPro.

Artificial lights can flicker or form bands

LEDs and other mains-powered lights may flicker or create dark bars when the camera’s frame and shutter timing conflicts with the light’s refresh cycle. A low-light stabilization feature can also affect anti-flicker behavior on some cameras, so a scene that looks fine under daylight may behave differently under indoor lighting.

Fix footage in a practical order

  1. Identify the scene and movement. Decide whether the camera is fixed while the subject moves, carried by a person, or mounted on a moving vehicle. Note whether the light is daylight, steady artificial light, or flickering LED or mains-powered light.
  2. Stabilize the camera physically. For a fixed night scene or a stationary subject, use a stable surface or tripod if available. Hold a handheld camera steadily to reduce high-frequency shake. Long-exposure stills are especially unsuited to handheld or moving-mounted capture; GoPro’s HERO5 Black manual makes that warning for its Night Photo mode, not all cameras or modes (HERO5 Black manual).
  3. Add safe, practical light. Turn on a nearby lamp or add scene-appropriate illumination when doing so is safe. More light can help the camera use a faster shutter without making the image as dark or relying as heavily on high ISO. DJI recommends increasing environmental brightness where possible (DJI Osmo Action support). A small LED light can help in a controllable scene, but is not a practical fix for every activity.
  4. Choose the frame rate for the movement you want. Use the lowest frame rate that still records the movement as intended. Higher frame rates can be useful for slow motion or extra temporal detail, but in scarce light they can leave less exposure time per frame or push the camera toward noisier settings. Automatic behavior and available options vary by model. For Insta360 X4, the manufacturer recommends 5.7K rather than 8K in low light for greater light sensitivity (Insta360 X4 low-light guidance).
  5. Adjust exposure and stabilization together. If moving edges smear, try a faster shutter or the camera maker’s dedicated low-light motion setting. Then compare EIS enabled with EIS reduced or disabled. A faster shutter can darken footage or require higher ISO; turning off EIS can reveal physical camera shake. Make a short clip before committing to a long recording.
  6. Check anti-flicker settings under artificial light. If the camera has an anti-flicker frequency option, match it to the filming region and use a compatible frame rate. Inspect the result for flicker and banding rather than assuming one setting works for every light source.
  7. Change one variable at a time and inspect the clip. Compare motion edges as well as static detail. Test light, frame rate, shutter, ISO limit, and stabilization separately so you can tell which adjustment helped.

Model-specific settings and cautions

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, 4, and 3

DJI’s support guidance recommends holding the camera steadily and increasing ambient brightness when possible. For the Osmo Action 5 Pro, DJI lists SuperNight, manual exposure settings, and “EIS Priority in Low Light” with PRO mode disabled; it also suggests trying EIS off. For the Osmo Action 4 and 3, it describes EIS Priority in Low Light with PRO mode disabled and likewise suggests testing with EIS off. Check your model’s current menus and firmware before relying on a label or setting. DJI cautions: “Please note that enabling the stabilization function without meeting the conditions for electronic stabilization may reduce the stabilization effect and image quality.”

Insta360 X4

Insta360 warns that low-light recording on the X4 can show more noise, reduced image quality, blur, and ghosting. Its guidance suggests a shutter speed between 1/100 and 1/200 for general low-light recording to reduce blur and ghosting. That is X4-specific manufacturer guidance, not a universal setting: the useful compromise depends on how quickly the subject or camera moves and how much light is available.

Insta360 GO Series: stabilization and regional flicker

Insta360 says its GO Series “Low Light Stabilization” or “Jitter Blur Reduction” features can alter shutter behavior and disable Anti-Flicker. Under LEDs or displays, that can mean flicker or black bars. For nighttime-motion scenes using the cited feature, its page gives these regional examples:

Region in Insta360 guidance Example frame rates
Most 50 Hz regions 25, 50, or 100 fps
Listed 60 Hz regions 30, 60, or 120 fps

These rates are examples for the page’s nighttime-motion scenario; the same page gives different examples for a separate banded-shadow scenario. Do not combine the two. Check the full model-specific guidance and test the actual light in your scene (Insta360 GO Series low-light guidance).

GoPro HERO7 Black and HERO5 Black

GoPro’s HERO7 Black article explains how long-shutter motion blur can look strange after stabilization removes camera motion. It notes that raising maximum ISO, shortening shutter time, increasing frame rate, or changing exposure bias each involves a trade-off, such as more noise or a darker image. The article is dated 2018-12-11 and describes firmware 1.61, so use it as guidance for that product context rather than a description of current GoPro models.

GoPro Labs’ Maximum Shutter Angle guidance illustrates the exposure trade-off with shutter angles and lists compatibility for Labs-enabled HERO7–13, MAX, and BONES. At 24 fps, its examples equate 360° with 1/24 second and 45° with 1/192 second. These are explanatory examples, not recommended settings for all scenes (GoPro low-light article; GoPro Labs: Maximum Shutter Angle).

The older HERO5 Black manual says Auto Low Light may adjust frame rate when possible and that stabilization may be temporarily turned off when Auto Low Light activates. It also cautions against using Night Photo’s longer shutter time for handheld or moving-mounted captures. Those instructions apply to HERO5 Black and should not be generalized to newer generations.

How to choose settings for the kind of scene

Fixed camera, moving subject

Mount the camera securely and prioritize a shutter fast enough to keep the subject’s important movement clear. Add light if possible. If the result is too dark, decide whether some motion blur is acceptable or whether the scene can be illuminated more; raising ISO may brighten the image at the cost of more visible noise. EIS may be unnecessary if the camera itself is not moving.

Camera carried by a person

Balance physical steadiness, shutter speed, and EIS. If the image looks smeared or warped despite stabilization, test a low-light stabilization mode where available and compare it with EIS reduced or off. Turning EIS off can improve the appearance of exposure-related artifacts but makes camera shake more apparent, so inspect a representative clip.

Camera mounted on a moving vehicle

Prioritize a secure, suitable mount and account for vibration as well as subject motion. A longer exposure may blur both scene details and vibration; increasing stabilization does not recover detail that exposure blur has removed. Avoid adding or aiming a light if it is unsafe or impractical during the activity.

Slow motion or fast action in dim light

High frame rates are a deliberate trade-off: they capture more temporal detail but may produce darker or noisier frames in scarce light. Use them when slow motion or that extra detail matters enough to accept the image-quality cost, and add light where feasible. Otherwise, select a lower supported frame rate that still captures the action as intended.

Choosing a camera for low-light motion

Manufacturer guidance describes different features and behaviors; it does not establish a controlled cross-brand winner. When comparing cameras, check the specific model’s supported low-light modes and frame rates, shutter controls, stabilization behavior in dim conditions, resolution/frame-rate combinations, and anti-flicker options for your region. Also consider whether a stable mount or extra light is practical for the activity. Menus and firmware can change, so confirm settings in the current manual and record a short test clip before relying on them.
