To get a retro cartridge professionally graded, identify the exact game and condition, confirm that a grading service accepts that cartridge type, choose a service tier based on declared value and speed, pack the cartridge securely, and ship it with tracking and insurance. The grader authenticates the item, assigns a condition grade, and seals it in a protective holder. A grade documents identity and condition; it does not guarantee a sale price or profit.
This guide covers the current submission process, published CGC and VGA options, costs, eligibility, packing, existing holders, and what to do when your graded cartridge returns. Prices and accepted systems can change, so verify the provider’s live terms before mailing a valuable game.
What professional cartridge grading actually does
A professional submission normally combines three services: authentication, condition assessment and encapsulation. The company checks whether the cartridge is genuine and matches its identifying details, evaluates visible condition against its own standard, then seals it in a tamper-evident or protective holder with a label and certification number.
CGC describes its video-game service as expert authentication, grading on a 10-point CGC scale and encapsulation in a crystal-clear, tamper-evident holder. VGA describes an authenticate–grade–encapsulate workflow. Its cases are marketed as UV-resistant and museum-grade in clarity.

The result is a standardized third-party record, not a valuation certificate. A buyer, auctioneer or marketplace may weigh title demand, authenticity evidence, grade, label accuracy and the reputation of the certifier differently. Heritage Auctions notes that certified games can still be evaluated differently by an auctioneer and lists both VGA/CGA- and WATA-certified material. A high number is most useful when the game is desirable, authentic and being sold to buyers who trust that certification.
Before you submit: identify the cartridge precisely
Grading starts with correct identification. Record the information below before you open an account or pay a fee:
- Platform and region: for example, NES North American release, Super NES European release or a Japanese Nintendo 64 cartridge.
- Title and edition: note revisions, player-choice editions, rental labels, serial variants and any known regional differences.
- Format: loose cartridge, complete in box, boxed but incomplete, or factory sealed.
- Label condition: describe fading, tears, lifting edges, writing, residue, scratches and missing portions.
- Shell condition: record cracks, whitening, dents, discoloration, replacement screws and mismatched halves.
- Visible electronics: note whether the board or contacts can be seen and whether the shell has been opened. Do not open a cartridge merely to improve a submission.
- Provenance: retain receipts, collection records, photographs and any prior authentication paperwork.
Photograph the front, back, top, bottom, both sides and any damage in evenly lit, high-resolution images. Include close-ups of labels, serials and unusual marks. These pictures document the cartridge’s pre-submission state and help with shipping or insurance disputes.
Check eligibility before paying
Acceptance is service-specific. CGC says it grades most major-platform games and select cartridge-only games. VGA currently lists cartridge designations for NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega 32X and Atari 2600. A platform being popular does not mean every regional release or accessory format is accepted, and lists can change.
Use the provider’s current submission portal and search for the exact platform, region and format. If the catalog distinguishes cartridge-only from boxed or sealed games, select the correct designation. Ask support before paying when the title is an unusual variant, prototype, multi-game cartridge, reproduction, unlicensed release or an item with a replacement shell.
CGC and VGA: how the current services differ
The following figures are published information checked for 2026 and should be treated as changeable, US-dollar pricing unless the provider states otherwise. They apply to the described service or in-stock size, not necessarily to every cartridge, region or submission route.

CGC’s published standard table also lists Standard Bulk at $45 per game with a 30-game minimum and an estimated 80-business-day turnaround. Its turnaround figures are estimates, not guarantees. VGA’s tier prices depend on the listed size and service category, so a cartridge outside the standard in-stock size can cost more or require different handling.

How to choose between the services
Choose based on the audience you expect to sell to, the cartridge’s eligibility, the grading scale you want displayed, the case features, declared-value rules, cleaning policy and acceptable wait time. Do not convert a CGC 10-point grade into a VGA 100-point grade or assume that equal-looking numbers are directly interchangeable. VGA’s Unified 10-point label and Standard 100-point label are its own presentations; they are not a universal industry conversion.
Declare value and select the right tier
Declared value is both a pricing input and a risk-control measure. CGC says fees depend on collectible type, fair market value and service level. It may move a submission to a higher tier if it determines that the declared value is understated. That can change the invoice after the item has been received.
Estimate FMV from recent sales of the same title, region, format and condition rather than from the highest headline sale you can find. A sealed copy, a loose cartridge and a complete-in-box copy are different markets. Keep the estimate defensible and retain the listings or auction records used to make it.
VGA’s published price varies with item size and tier. Its Priority, Express and Walk Through options trade higher fees for shorter target windows. Optional UV protection, cleaning and grading-summary services can add to the invoice. Confirm whether a selected add-on is appropriate for the cartridge: cleaning may remove surface dirt, but it cannot repair a torn label, restore missing plastic or make an altered cartridge original.
Budget for costs beyond the grading line item:
- Outbound and return shipping.
- Transit insurance based on the declared value.
- Carrier signature service for expensive submissions.
- Provider handling fees, payment surcharges or declared-value adjustments.
- Packaging materials and any optional cleaning, UV or report services.
Prepare the cartridge without damaging it
Use a protective inner layer
Place a loose cartridge in a clean, snug polyethylene or polypropylene sleeve or bag that will not abrade the label. Avoid loose paper, adhesive tape touching the cartridge and oversized bags that let the game slide around. Do not polish contacts, use solvents, apply label glue or replace parts unless you understand that such work can affect authenticity and the eventual grade.

Build rigid protection
Put the sleeved cartridge between rigid, non-abrasive sheets or inside a fitted protective container. Add cushioning around the container, not directly against a fragile label. The package should prevent movement when gently shaken. For several cartridges, separate each item and keep them from striking one another.
Document the package
Photograph the cartridge, the packed interior, the sealed box and the shipping label. Keep the tracking number, insurance receipt, declared value and submission confirmation together. These records establish what you sent and how it was packed if a carrier or receiving department reports damage.
Do not include irreplaceable extras
Send only what the service requests. Do not add manuals, certificates, boxes, prototypes or personal memorabilia that are not part of the declared submission. A certificate or previous grading label does not authenticate the new submission and may be discarded or separated if the provider did not request it.

Shipping checklist
- Confirm the submission number, service tier, declared value and return address in the grading portal.
- Wrap the sleeved cartridge in rigid protection and cushioning so it cannot move.
- Use a strong outer box with enough crush space; avoid an oversized box that allows the inner package to rattle.
- Seal every seam with durable packing tape and remove old carrier labels.
- Choose trackable shipping with insurance for the declared value. Add signature confirmation when appropriate.
- Upload or retain the package photographs, tracking receipt and drop-off confirmation.
- Monitor carrier delivery and the grader’s intake status. Do not assume the estimated turnaround begins when you print a label; it normally depends on receipt and processing.
Follow the provider’s current packing instructions if they differ from this general method. Requirements can vary by country, submission center, service tier and item type.
What happens after the grader receives it
The provider logs the submission, checks the item against the form, authenticates it, evaluates condition and encapsulates it if it qualifies. A result can be delayed by intake questions, an incorrect service selection, a value-based tier change or a need for additional review. The quoted turnaround is an estimate, not a promise of a specific return date.

- Match the certification number and title, platform, region and variant to your submission record.
- Check that the label spelling, edition information and grade are correct.
- Inspect the holder for cracks, stress marks, loose pieces, clouding or evidence of tampering.
- Photograph the unopened return package and the holder if damage is present.
- Report discrepancies promptly through the provider’s stated claims or customer-service process.
How to store and display a graded cartridge
Keep the holder away from direct sunlight, radiators, hot vehicles, attics and damp basements. Stable temperature, low humidity and limited ultraviolet exposure reduce the risk of label fading, plastic distortion and adhesive deterioration. VGA specifically promotes UV-resistant, museum-grade cases; CGC describes its holder as tamper-evident. Those are preservation features, not proof that a cartridge is authentic or valuable.
Do not stack heavy objects on slabs, place them where they can fall or clean the holder with abrasive products. Use a display case or shelf that supports the holder without pinching it. If you use an additional UV-resistant display case, leave enough ventilation to avoid trapping heat and moisture.
Submitting a cartridge already in another holder
CGC states that a game in a WATA or other competing holder may be submitted for CGC Video Games CrossOver certification. A CrossOver request is not a guarantee that the existing grade will be replicated; the receiving service applies its own authentication and grading standards. Follow the current portal instructions on whether the original holder remains intact during evaluation and how a minimum acceptable grade is specified.
PSA announced on September 19, 2025 that the WATA brand was becoming PSA. Because portals, labels and terms can change during a brand transition, verify the current submission destination and instructions before mailing a WATA-labeled game. Do not rely on an old form or an address copied from a previous submission.

What it establishes
- A third party examined the item under the provider’s authentication and grading process.
- The holder and label create a persistent record of the submitted identity and assigned condition grade.
- The certification number allows the owner or buyer to check the provider’s record when a verification tool is available.
What it does not establish
- It does not guarantee a resale price, investment return or auction result.
- It does not make a common title rare or create demand for an unpopular release.
- It does not prove that every accessory, manual or provenance claim outside the graded item is genuine.
- It does not make one company’s numeric scale directly equivalent to another company’s scale.
One frequently cited market event illustrates why a single sale should not be treated as a forecast: Heritage Auctions reports a $1,560,000 sale on July 11, 2021 for a WATA 9.8 A++ sealed Super Mario 64. That was a particular sealed copy, grade, buyer pool and auction date, not a guaranteed price for loose cartridges or other grades.

Choosing a service before checking eligibility
Symptom: The title or cartridge format is missing from the order form. Fix: Confirm the exact platform, region and format with the current eligibility list or support team before paying.

Understating fair market value
Symptom: The provider invoices a higher tier after intake. Fix: Use comparable sales for the same version and condition, document your estimate and declare a value that would cover a realistic loss.
Packing a loose cartridge in a large box
Symptom: The cartridge arrives with a cracked shell or label abrasion. Fix: Use a snug sleeve, rigid protection and cushioning that prevents all movement.
Assuming the fastest tier is guaranteed
Symptom: The return takes longer than the advertised window. Fix: Read whether the provider calls the figure an estimate, identify when the clock starts, and allow for intake, shipping and value adjustments.

Symptom: A label or shell shows chemical damage or the item is treated as altered. Fix: Leave the cartridge unchanged unless the service expressly offers a compatible cleaning option and you accept its effects on grading.
Comparing grades as if they were universal
Symptom: A buyer treats a CGC 9 as identical to a VGA 90 or a Unified 9. Fix: Identify the grading company and scale in every listing and compare the provider’s standards, not just the number.
A practical decision path
- Inventory: Photograph and document the exact cartridge, condition and provenance.
- Eligibility: Check whether the current CGC, VGA or another chosen service accepts that platform and format.
- Market: Decide whether a third-party record is useful for your intended buyer; grading is not automatically worthwhile for every low-value game.
- Tier: Set a defensible FMV, compare standard and expedited pricing, and include shipping, insurance and add-ons.
- Prepare: Sleeve, rigidly protect, photograph and pack the cartridge according to the provider’s instructions.
- Submit: Use trackable, insured shipping and retain all records.
- Verify: Check the certification number, label, grade and holder condition on return, then store the slab in a stable, low-light environment.
Bottom line: when professional grading makes sense
Professional grading is most defensible when the cartridge is authentic, desirable, in condition worth documenting and likely to be sold or displayed to buyers who recognize the chosen certifier. Compare eligibility, authentication process, scale, case, value rules, cleaning policy and turnaround rather than chasing the highest-looking number. Submit only after the total cost and the limits of the grade are clear.
