To generate a YouTube thumbnail with an app, create a 16:9 image in a design app, export it as a JPG or PNG, then attach it in YouTube Studio. For standard videos, YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels (minimum width 640 pixels). Custom thumbnails require a verified account. Shorts use a different workflow: YouTube currently says custom Shorts thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
This guide covers the complete phone and desktop process, file limits, design choices, Shorts rules, troubleshooting, testing, and an optional way to capture clean webpage imagery for a thumbnail.
Before you start
- Verify your YouTube account. YouTube requires verification before you can upload a custom thumbnail. If the option is missing, check verification and channel eligibility first. Daily limits can vary by country, region, or channel history; a “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached” message may require a 24-hour wait. See YouTube’s current requirements.
- Identify the video type. Standard videos support the mobile upload workflow. Shorts have a computer-only custom-thumbnail workflow according to YouTube’s current help page.
- Prepare lawful, readable artwork. Use a frame, photograph, logo, or stock image you are entitled to use. Keep text large enough to read on a phone and make the subject obvious at a glance.
Recommended thumbnail dimensions and file limits

Use JPG or PNG for standard video thumbnails. YouTube also lists separate limits for other content types, including a 10 MB mobile limit for podcast thumbnails. Keep the number and device context with the limit: a 2 MB mobile limit is not the same as the 50 MB desktop limit.
For vertical videos, YouTube says a 16:9 custom image can be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image remains visible in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.

Make the image in a phone or desktop app
Canva
In Canva’s YouTube Thumbnail maker, search for the “YouTube Thumbnail” design type, choose a template or blank design, replace the imagery and text, then download the result to your phone or computer. Canva documents JPEG and PNG downloads. Check the current plan before using paid templates, assets, or export options; the availability of individual features can change.
Adobe Express
Adobe Express supports thumbnail creation on desktop and mobile. Start with a template or blank canvas, add uploaded or stock imagery, apply channel branding, and download the finished file. As with any design service, confirm which assets and functions are included in your current plan.
What to put on the canvas
- Use one clear focal subject rather than a crowded collage.
- Write a short phrase that adds information instead of repeating the video title.
- Create strong contrast between text and background; add a shadow or outline when necessary.
- Keep faces, logos, and important words away from edges that may be cropped in previews.
- Preview the design at phone size before exporting.
Upload a standard-video thumbnail on Android
- Open the YouTube Studio Android app.
- Tap Content and select the video.
- Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
- Choose Custom thumbnail and select the JPG or PNG saved by your design app.
- Confirm the selection and tap Save.
The regular YouTube Android app also documents a route through Your videos, selecting a video, tapping Edit thumbnail, choosing the image, and saving. Labels can vary slightly by app version. The Studio route is the clearest creator workflow. See YouTube’s Android instructions.
Upload from YouTube Studio on a computer
- Go to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Select the video and open its details page.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file.
- Select the exported JPG or PNG, then save the video details.
The desktop workflow also offers Get suggestions where available. YouTube may take time to process and display a changed thumbnail, so do not assume an unchanged preview means the upload failed immediately.

How Shorts thumbnails differ
YouTube’s current help text states: “Custom thumbnails for Shorts are currently only available to add in YouTube Studio on a computer.” Create a portrait 9:16 design, export it, and use the computer Studio workflow. Do not rely on the standard-video Android steps for a Short. YouTube may still choose alternate crops in some surfaces, particularly for vertical content.
Test thumbnail variants when your channel is eligible
YouTube documents an A/B test feature in Studio on desktop that can test up to three title and thumbnail variants. Advanced-features eligibility and video restrictions apply; Shorts and certain video states or audiences are excluded. Open the video in Studio, look for the testing option, and follow the eligibility prompts. Treat the result as a platform experiment, not a guarantee of higher views: the available sources establish the feature, not a universal click-through improvement.
Design and export checklist
- Standard video: 16:9, ideally 3840 × 2160 pixels.
- Short: 9:16, with a portrait canvas suitable for the computer upload workflow.
- Export JPG or PNG and check the relevant mobile or desktop size limit.
- Inspect small-screen readability and edge cropping.
- Use only images, fonts, and logos you have permission to publish.
- Check the final image against YouTube Community Guidelines.
YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as possible reasons for rejection. Repeated violations can result in losing thumbnail privileges.

Troubleshooting
There is no Custom thumbnail button
Verify the account, confirm that you selected a standard video, update the YouTube or Studio app, and check channel eligibility. Shorts custom thumbnails currently require Studio on a computer. A daily-limit error can require a 24-hour wait.

The upload is rejected
Check that the file is JPG or PNG, within the device-specific size limit, and at least 640 pixels wide for a standard video. Remove prohibited imagery and try exporting again.
The thumbnail looks wrong after saving
Allow processing time, refresh Studio, and check the video on more than one surface. Vertical-video surfaces can use an automatic 4:5 crop even when your custom image remains elsewhere.
Text is unreadable
Return to the design app, reduce the wording, increase contrast and font weight, and preview at the size viewers will see on a phone.

YouTube’s documented mobile workflow selects and uploads an image; use a separate design app such as Canva or Adobe Express to create the artwork.
Does a custom thumbnail guarantee more views?
No. The available YouTube documentation describes upload and testing features, not a guaranteed performance outcome.
Can I use a 16:9 image for a Short?
Create a 9:16 design for a Short and upload it through YouTube Studio on a computer, following YouTube’s current instructions.

Can I replace a thumbnail later?
Yes. Reopen the video’s thumbnail controls in YouTube Studio, select another image, and save; processing may take time.
What if my exported file is larger than the limit?
Export a lower-quality JPG, reduce pixel dimensions while preserving the required ratio, or use a smaller design-app export until it fits the limit for your upload device.
