Generate a thumbnail from a live webpage
- Choose the target URL. Use the exact public page you want represented, including its scheme and path. If the page requires a login or depends on user-specific content, check that the capture service can access the required state.
- Choose a capture scope. Use a full-page capture when the entire page matters, a viewport capture for a fixed-size preview, or a CSS selector when the service supports capturing a specific element. Excluded selectors can help remove page elements that should not appear.
- Set the image options. Pick a supported format and quality. A capture service may also offer viewport presets, dark mode, or a delay before capture. These controls vary by service; they are not verified VisualScraper options.
- Inspect the result. Check that the important text and visuals are legible and that the capture has not included a banner, popup, or unrelated page section. Adjust the viewport, selector, exclusions, or timing as the chosen service allows.
- Store the image somewhere stable. If the service returns a temporary URL, download the image or cache it on a route or storage location you control before using it as a long-lived social preview.

OpenGraph.io documents a GET screenshot endpoint that takes an encoded target URL and an app ID. OpenGraph.io says its returned screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours, so download or cache an image if it needs to remain available longer. Treat that expiry as specific to the documented service, not a general rule for screenshot URLs.

Build a branded thumbnail with an HTML template
- Create a dedicated HTML page. Design the card at the dimensions you intend to publish, with room for the page title, author, logo, or other desired content.
- Pass in the content dynamically. A template workflow can accept values such as a title or author as parameters, so one design can render cards for many pages.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The result shows the wrong content: Confirm the exact target URL and whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page. For a particular part of the page, use a CSS selector if the service supports it.
- A banner, popup, or chat widget obscures the page: Use a supported cookie-banner blocking option, exclude the offending selector, or capture a clean template page instead. Support varies by service.
- The page is captured before it finishes rendering: If available, increase the capture delay or use a wait condition. A delay setting is not proof that a page’s dynamic content has finished loading.
- The image link stops working: Check whether the provider’s capture URL expires. For OpenGraph.io, documented screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours; download or cache the image for longer-term use.
- The card looks inconsistent across pages: A direct capture inherits each page’s layout. Use a dedicated template with dynamic content when consistent composition and branding matter.
