Use browser automation to capture each directory URL at a fixed CSS viewport, then request device-pixel output at a scale factor of 2 for a double-density image. With Playwright, the key choice is scale: "css" versus scale: "device"; choose viewport, full-page, or element capture to match what each thumbnail should show. Keep the capture environment and settings consistent, and verify dimensions and sharpness on a small sample before running the full directory.
How retina-resolution screenshots work
A browser lays out a page in CSS pixels. A device scale factor determines how many image pixels represent each CSS pixel. At scale 2, a 400 × 250 CSS-pixel viewport can produce an 800 × 500 image when the capture uses device-pixel scaling. Exact output depends on the browser and capture configuration.
Playwright’s screenshot API distinguishes CSS-pixel output from device-pixel output: its scale option can be set to "css" or "device". With device scaling, each device pixel becomes an image pixel, so a high-DPI capture can be twice as large or larger in each dimension. See the Playwright screenshot API.
Retina output adds pixel density, not extra page layout space. Set the CSS viewport to the framing and aspect ratio your directory needs; increasing the device scale factor should make that same framing sharper, not wider.

Choose what each directory thumbnail should show
- Initial viewport: Use a fixed viewport for a consistent above-the-fold preview. This is usually the clearest option when directory cards should share a common shape.
- Full page: Captures the scrollable page, which may create a very tall image. Plan to crop or resize it for a directory grid.
- One element: Capture a selected hero, card, or preview region when that specific section—not the page as a whole—is the thumbnail subject.
Playwright documents viewport, full-page, and locator-based screenshots in its screenshot guide. For device emulation and viewport settings, see Playwright emulation.
Generate thumbnails in a batch with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. It reads URLs from a JSON file, sets a fixed viewport, captures device pixels at scale 2, saves PNG files with deterministic names, and writes a manifest that maps each filename back to its URL. It records navigation and capture errors per URL so one failed site does not stop the rest of the batch.

1. Install Playwright
In a new project directory, run:
npm init -y
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
2. Create the URL list
Save this as sites.json:
[
{ "name": "example", "url": "https://example.com" },
{ "name": "another-site", "url": "https://another.example" }
]
Use stable, unique names when possible. The script also adds an index to filenames, so repeated names do not overwrite one another.
3. Save and run the capture script
Save as capture.js:
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const path = require('node:path');
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const WIDTH = 400; // CSS pixels
const HEIGHT = 250; // CSS pixels
const SCALE = 2; // device pixels per CSS pixel
const INPUT = 'sites.json';
const OUT_DIR = 'thumbnails';
const NAVIGATION_TIMEOUT_MS = 45_000;
function safeName(value) {
return String(value || 'site')
.normalize('NFKD')
.replace(/[^a-zA-Z0-9_-]+/g, '-')
.replace(/^-+|-+$/g, '')
.toLowerCase() || 'site';
}
(async () => {
const sites = JSON.parse(await fs.readFile(INPUT, 'utf8'));
await fs.mkdir(OUT_DIR, { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: WIDTH, height: HEIGHT },
deviceScaleFactor: SCALE,
});
const results = [];
try {
for (let i = 0; i < sites.length; i++) {
const site = sites[i];
const filename = `${String(i + 1).padStart(4, '0')}-${safeName(site.name)}.png`;
const filePath = path.join(OUT_DIR, filename);
const page = await context.newPage();
let status = null;
let error = null;
try {
const response = await page.goto(site.url, {
waitUntil: 'load',
timeout: NAVIGATION_TIMEOUT_MS,
});
status = response ? response.status() : null;
await page.screenshot({
path: filePath,
type: 'png',
fullPage: false,
scale: 'device',
animations: 'disabled',
timeout: NAVIGATION_TIMEOUT_MS,
});
} catch (err) {
error = err.message;
} finally {
await page.close();
}
results.push({ name: site.name, url: site.url, filename: error ? null : filename, httpStatus: status, error });
process.stdout.write(`${error ? 'FAILED' : 'SAVED'} ${site.url}${error ? `: ${error}` : ` -> ${filePath}`}n`);
}
} finally {
await context.close();
await browser.close();
}
await fs.writeFile('manifest.json', JSON.stringify(results, null, 2));
})().catch((err) => {
console.error(err);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Run it with:
node capture.js
With the example dimensions and device scale factor, the intended PNG output is 800 × 500 pixels. Confirm the actual output dimensions in your image viewer or image-processing pipeline before scaling up; capture behavior can depend on browser configuration.

Adjust the capture policy for your sites
- Use another density: Change
SCALEto 3 for three image pixels per CSS pixel, then confirm resulting dimensions and file sizes. - Wait for a page state: Replace
waitUntil: 'load'with an appropriate readiness check if the important content appears after initial load. A site-specific selector wait can be more reliable than an arbitrary delay. - Capture the full page: Set
fullPage: true; expect variable image heights, then crop or resize to the directory’s required dimensions. - Capture an element: Locate the intended element and call
locator.screenshot({ path: filePath, scale: 'device' }). Handle a missing selector as a per-site failure. - Change format: Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Choose based on downstream compatibility, transparency needs, and storage limits; test representative pages because no one format is best for every directory.
- Normalize derivatives: Preserve the original high-density captures if useful, and create separate cropped or resized thumbnails for the card grid. Keep the manifest so each output remains traceable to its source URL.
Use shot-scraper for a command-line batch
If you prefer a command-line workflow, shot-scraper documents a --retina option that sets device scale factor 2, and also documents scale factor 3. Its flags and behavior are specific to the installed version, so check that version’s help and documentation before building a batch job. This is a simpler fit when command-line capture meets your needs; Playwright provides a programmable API for custom naming, manifests, error handling, and post-processing.
Shot-scraper’s documented retina setting does not establish a universal output size: set the viewport deliberately, and inspect generated files before processing the entire URL list. Do not infer speed, operating cost, or maintenance superiority from the available capture controls alone.

Keep a directory batch consistent and dependable
Stabilize the rendering environment
Use the same browser, browser version, operating-system environment, viewport, device scale factor, and headless configuration for the batch. Rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance recommends using the same environment as the baseline.
Control changing page content
Animations, timestamps, rotating ads, and late-loading content can make repeated captures differ. Decide what a useful page state means for your directory, wait for that state where practical, and suppress or avoid volatile elements when appropriate. Playwright supports disabling animations in screenshot options; for other changes, a site-specific wait or capture policy may be needed.

Validate before scaling up
- Capture a small, varied sample of sites, including pages with slow loading and pages with dynamic content.
- Check pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, sharpness, framing, and whether the important content is visible.
- Check whether full-page outputs need cropping and whether the chosen format meets compatibility and storage requirements.
- Review the manifest for navigation failures, HTTP responses, and captures that need a different wait or selector.
- Run the remaining URLs using the same browser and settings, then retain the URL-to-file mapping.
The appropriate thumbnail dimensions, image format, and waiting policy depend on the directory’s design and target sites; there is no universal size or capture policy established for every directory.

- Image is not retina-sized: Confirm the screenshot uses
scale: 'device'and that the browser context has the intendeddeviceScaleFactor. Inspect output dimensions;scale: 'css'produces CSS-pixel-sized output. - Thumbnails have inconsistent framing: Ensure every page uses the same CSS viewport and capture extent. Full-page captures naturally have different heights; use viewport screenshots or normalize full-page results.
- Important content is missing: The page may render it after the chosen navigation event. Wait for the relevant selector or a suitable page state before taking the screenshot.
- A page times out or fails to load: Increase the timeout only when a slow but valid page is expected, and inspect the failed URL separately. Keep failures in the manifest rather than silently treating missing files as successful captures.
- Element capture fails: The selector may not exist, may be hidden, or may appear late. Confirm it against the loaded page and wait for it before capturing.
- Repeated images differ: Keep the browser environment fixed and account for animations, clocks, ads, and other changing page content.
- Files are too large or unsuitable for delivery: Test supported PNG, JPEG, or WebP output against real examples and downstream requirements. Consider retaining raw captures separately from normalized derivatives.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a physical device with a Retina display to create high-density thumbnails?
No. The documented workflow uses browser automation and device-pixel capture settings; it does not establish a physical Retina display as a requirement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can every website produce an identical screenshot on every run?
No. Rendering can vary by browser and host environment, and page content such as timestamps or ads may change. A fixed environment and an explicit capture policy improve consistency but do not make every site identical.
