Use an OpenAPI-aware mock server such as Prism to serve responses directly from your YAML or JSON specification. For predictable results, add explicit response examples; for varied test data, enable dynamic generation from the schema. A mock can only be as realistic as the contract’s examples and modeled constraints.
Prepare the OpenAPI spec
Before starting a mock server, confirm the specification includes the operations your client needs and the relevant response content. Add representative bodies for important success and error responses, and associate each example with the correct response status code.
Use named examples when a client or test needs to select among scenarios, such as a normal result, an empty collection, or a representative error. Where examples are not enough, describe the response schema in detail: include types, formats, defaults, nullability, enums, constraints, and nested object structure. These details give schema-based generation more useful information to work with.
Start a local mock with Prism
Prism is an open-source HTTP mock server that can mimic an API using information in its OpenAPI description. Twilio’s guide attributes that characterization to the Prism documentation. To install the CLI globally with npm and start a mock from a local specification, run:

prism mock path/to/openapi.yamlThe command-line documentation also supports installing with Yarn. Twilio’s guide demonstrates passing a hosted JSON specification URL to prism mock instead of a local file. When Prism starts, it reports the local listener and the operations it discovered; use that information to send requests to the mock.
Choose fixed examples or generated data
Use examples for repeatable scenarios
Prism’s default static strategy returns an available response example. If the response has no example, Prism follows the schema and references to construct a response. This fallback may be valid in shape but generic in content—for instance, simple strings or zeroes—when the specification lacks meaningful examples and metadata.

For stable test cases, write explicit examples for the states your client must handle. Prism documents the Prefer header for selecting an example and for forcing a response status. When selecting an example for a non-200 response, specify the response code as well as the example selection where needed. Consult the Prism documentation for the header syntax and current behavior.
Use dynamic mode for variation
To generate values from the schema rather than rely on response examples, start Prism with dynamic mode:

prism mock -d path/to/openapi.yamlPrism’s guide says dynamic generation uses json-schema-faker and may draw on schema formats and Faker. In this mode, response examples are not consulted, so do not expect a named example to remain the chosen output. Dynamic responses are useful when varied lengths, numbers, or formats may reveal assumptions in the client; they are not a substitute for fixed examples when a test depends on a specific scenario.
Validate requests and keep the mock in sync
Prism validates incoming requests against the OpenAPI description and can return validation feedback. This helps identify requests that do not match the contract, but it does not prove that a live backend implements the documented behavior.

Run the mock from the specification maintained by the API team and update examples as that contract changes. Prism’s CLI documentation says the tool refuses to mock a document with circular references. Check the current CLI documentation if your specification uses features whose support may depend on the Prism version.

Schema conformance and production-like content are different things. A response can have the right fields and types yet still be unconvincing if the specification contains no business-specific values, formats, or constraints. A generator cannot infer business meaning that the contract does not describe.

For dependable client coverage, combine explicit examples for important states with dynamic tests where variability is useful. Fixed data checks known UI and error scenarios; varied data can expose assumptions about value ranges and formats. These approaches serve different testing goals.
When to choose another mock tool
The best fit depends on whether you want responses generated from the contract or hand-authored, whether repeatable scenarios or varied data matter more, whether request validation is needed, and whether you need a local or shared setup. Verify support for the OpenAPI dialect and document features your specification uses.
