You can create a nature background for a video by generating a new scene from a text prompt or by animating a landscape still. Describe the setting, framing and movement you want, generate a few versions, then inspect the clip and export it in a format and aspect ratio suited to your project. Adobe Firefly, Runway and Canva document workflows for generating or animating video; their features, availability and terms differ.
Choose text-to-video or image-to-video
Start with text-to-video if you have an idea but no particular landscape image. Choose image-to-video if you want a photograph, illustration or concept image to guide the scene’s appearance. Adobe documents both prompt-based generation and animating still images; Runway describes generation from prompts, images or existing clips. Canva’s page focuses on animating still images into short clips. Adobe Firefly video generation, Adobe’s image-to-video guidance, Runway and Canva image-to-video describe these respective options.
Write a prompt that works as a background
For a new scene from text
Include the setting, time or lighting, viewpoint, visual style and movement. Keep the foreground needs in mind: if a presenter, captions or graphics will sit over the scene, ask for restrained movement and a stable camera rather than dramatic pans or busy action.
Example prompt: “Wide, static view of a forest lake at dawn, soft cool light, low mist drifting slowly above the water, subtle ripples, distant tree line, branches moving gently in a light breeze, realistic natural colors, calm composition with open space in the center.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a guarantee of a particular output.

For an existing still landscape
Use a clear, high-quality image with a composition that already suits the video. Prompt for the movement you want to see—such as mist drifting, leaves stirring or water rippling—instead of restating everything already visible in the image. Runway’s guidance for image-to-video emphasizes motion-focused prompting; for text-to-video, it recommends describing both visual and motion elements. Runway’s Gen-4.5 prompt guidance identifies text-to-video and image-to-video support in the documentation described there; model availability can change.
Generate, review and refine the clip
- Generate a first version. Use the text prompt or upload the still, depending on your starting point. Keep the first prompt direct, with one clear setting and a small number of motions.
- Compare variations. Look for a version whose motion, composition and brightness leave the foreground readable. A beautiful landscape may still be a poor background if its movement or contrast competes with the subject.
- Inspect motion and edges. Check the horizon, shoreline, branches, water, repeating patterns and boundaries between elements. Watch for flicker, warping or objects that appear to change shape. Runway recommends high-quality inputs and simple, direct prompts to reduce morphing and artifacts; this is vendor guidance, not a guarantee.
- Revise one thing at a time. If the camera moves too much, specify a locked-off view. If the scene is busy, reduce the number or intensity of motions. If a still-image animation looks distorted, try a better source image or a more limited motion prompt.
- Edit and export. Adobe describes trimming, reordering, swapping models, regenerating or extending segments, and exporting in multiple formats and aspect ratios. Runway describes extending, upscaling and exporting. Check the selected tool’s current export controls and your editor’s requirements before finalizing; the documented pages do not establish a complete, current apples-to-apples comparison of output duration, resolution, format or plan limits.

Before publishing, check the current terms for the exact tool, model, plan, input image and jurisdiction. Confirm that you have rights to any image you upload, and do not assume that a provider’s statement about one model applies to another. Adobe also says C2PA metadata is automatically applied on download or export when qualifying Firefly generative tools are used; check its current documentation to see which tools and terms qualify. Adobe’s generative AI user guidelines provide related terms.

Prepare the background for its destination
- Match the aspect ratio to the project: a vertical social video, widescreen presentation and square post may need different framing.
- Check the exported dimensions, file format and clip duration against the platform or editor you will use. Options can differ by service, model and plan.
- Watch the clip at its intended size and with the foreground layered over it. Subtle motion can become distracting when looped or viewed behind text.
- If the background will repeat, inspect the transition between the end and beginning. If it is visibly abrupt, trim, extend or edit it in a suitable video editor rather than assuming the generated clip loops cleanly.
