The safest way to reclaim Call of Duty storage is to use the game’s own content manager: open Menu > Manage Files > Manage Files, select the installed title, mode, language pack, or optional asset you no longer need, and uninstall it. On PC, also use your launcher’s component selector, such as Battle.net’s Options > Modify Install. These methods remove optional content without deleting your entire installation or saved data.

Call of Duty storage use varies by title, platform, installed modes, language packs, updates, and texture assets. There is no single official install-size number that applies reliably to every PC and console. The steps below help you identify what is consuming space, remove it safely, and recover from corrupted files without confusing cache cleanup with permanent save deletion.

Start with Call of Duty’s Manage Files screen

Activision recommends the in-game content-management system when uninstalling full games or modes. Platform-level deletion can treat files as separate packages, while the game knows which components belong together.

  1. Launch Call of Duty.
  2. Open the Menu.
  3. Choose Manage Files.
  4. Choose Manage Files again if a second menu appears.
  5. Select the installed title or content tile you want to change.
  6. Choose the option to uninstall, install, or manage that content, then confirm.

The exact tiles depend on your release and platform. You may see separate entries for Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade, Warzone, language packs, and high-resolution or other optional assets. Removing a tile removes that component, not necessarily every Call of Duty title on the drive.

What can usually be removed

  • Campaign: Remove it if you only play online modes. You can download it again from the game or platform store when you want to return.
  • Multiplayer: Uninstall it if you use only Campaign, Zombies, or another installed mode.
  • Zombies or Dead Ops Arcade: These are separate playable components in releases that support them.
  • Warzone: In supported installations, it is optional rather than an automatic requirement for every annual title.
  • Language packs: Keep only the spoken and text languages you use.
  • High-resolution assets: Remove these when local capacity matters more than maximum texture detail.

Do not remove a folder manually just because its name looks large. A shared file can support more than one mode, and deleting it outside the content manager can force a complete repair or redownload.

Check what is using space before uninstalling

First identify the exact Call of Duty entry and add-on consuming capacity. A platform may list the base game, an annual title, Warzone, language packs, and updates as separate items. The number shown in a storage screen can also differ from the amount displayed by the launcher because reserved space, patches, and temporary files are counted differently.

  • On PlayStation, open the console’s storage settings and inspect the games and add-ons list.
  • On Xbox, open My games & apps, highlight Call of Duty, press the menu button, and inspect Manage game and add-ons.
  • On Windows, check the drive’s free-space indicator, then inspect the launcher’s installed components rather than deleting folders in File Explorer.

Record how much free space is available before making changes. After uninstalling, restart the launcher or console and check again; some systems do not refresh the total immediately.

Free space on PC

Battle.net: use Modify Install

Battle.net provides a component selector for Call of Duty installations.

  1. Open the Battle.net desktop app and select the Call of Duty entry.
  2. Open Options.
  3. Choose Modify Install.
  4. Clear the check boxes for campaigns, modes, language packs, or optional assets you do not need.
  5. Apply the change and allow the installer to recalculate the required disk space.

Blizzard’s installer updates the space requirement as you change selections. Wait for the operation to finish before launching the game. If the app still reports the old size, close and reopen Battle.net, then check the drive again.

Steam installations

Steam installations have their own library-management controls. Use the Call of Duty entry in your Steam library and look for the installed-content or properties area to remove optional downloadable content. Labels can vary by release, so confirm that a selected item is a mode or asset rather than the entire game.

If a Steam installation will not start after a change, use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command for that library entry. Verification replaces missing or damaged files; it does not intentionally remove an optional mode you have chosen to keep uninstalled.

Microsoft Store and Xbox app on Windows

Microsoft Store-based installations use Windows or Xbox app controls for installed content and repair. Open the game’s installed-app management screen and use the available modify, move, or repair options. Do not delete the package directory manually: protected folders and shared dependencies can leave an incomplete installation.

When the launcher offers Verify or Repair, use it after an interrupted update, crash, or unexplained missing-file message. Repair can download files again, so make sure the drive has enough temporary space.

Keep launchers on the same storage plan

Removing components from the launcher frees space only on the drive that contains the installation. If the game is split across multiple libraries, check each drive. Also leave room for future patches: a drive that is barely above the current requirement can still fail when an update needs temporary working space.

Free space on PlayStation

Use the in-game Manage Files or Game Installs screen where it is available. The menu names differ between releases and between PS5 and PS4, but the content tiles serve the same purpose.

  1. Start Call of Duty and open Menu > Manage Files.
  2. Select the game or mode tile you no longer use.
  3. Confirm the uninstall and wait until the console finishes removing the package.
  4. Open the PlayStation storage view to confirm the reclaimed capacity.

If the in-game manager is unavailable or the installation is damaged, highlight Call of Duty on the PlayStation home screen, open the options menu, and inspect Manage Game Content or the equivalent add-on list. Prefer the in-game manager for full games and modes. A removed component can be downloaded again from the platform store or the game’s content screen.

PS5 and PS4 cache procedures

Cache clearing is a troubleshooting step for freezes, slow loading, connectivity problems, or corrupted temporary data. It is not a substitute for uninstalling a campaign or mode. Follow the console-specific power-cycle or safe-mode procedure documented for your PlayStation model; do not choose an option that initializes the console or deletes installed games unless you intend to reset it.

Free space on Xbox

On Xbox consoles, the in-game manager is the clearest way to remove individual Call of Duty components.

  1. Launch Call of Duty and open Menu > Manage Files or Game Installs.
  2. Select Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, language packs, or optional texture assets.
  3. Choose uninstall and confirm.
  4. After completion, open My games & apps > Manage > Free up space or the game’s add-on screen to verify the result.

You can also highlight the game in My games & apps, press the menu button, and choose Manage game and add-ons. Use that route to inspect packages, not to delete arbitrary files. Reinstall removed content through the Microsoft Store or the game’s installation manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox cache procedures

Power-cycle or clear temporary data only when you are troubleshooting crashes, network errors, or unusually slow loading. Cache removal should not erase your cloud-synchronized saves. Saved-data deletion is a different and potentially permanent action; avoid it unless you have a backup and specifically need to reset local save data.

Reduce local storage with On-Demand High-Quality Streaming

Call of Duty’s current texture-streaming setting is On-Demand High-Quality Streaming. It moves less frequently used content into a streaming cache instead of requiring every asset to remain permanently on local storage.

Setting Local-storage effect Visual effect Bandwidth effect Choose it when
Optimized Uses streaming to reduce the amount of high-quality content kept directly on the drive. Preserves higher-fidelity graphics when the required assets are available. Uses more internet bandwidth than Minimal. You have a reliable connection and want better texture detail.
Minimal Limits streaming activity and keeps the local footprint and ongoing transfers lower. May reduce texture quality. Uses less bandwidth. You have a data cap, unstable internet, or prefer predictable network use.

Find the setting in Call of Duty’s graphics or online-services options; the exact submenu can change between releases. Streaming is not the same as uninstalling a mode. It can reduce direct local storage and downloads, but it may use bandwidth while you play and can lower image quality when set to Minimal.

Activision’s content roadmap explains that expanded streaming technology was introduced to reduce file and download sizes. It also separated Warzone from annual-title downloads so players can opt in to install it. That organization does not automatically remove older content already on your drive: you still need to uninstall unused components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse cache cleanup with deleting saved data

Temporary cache files can become corrupted and cause crashes, connection failures, freezes, or slow loads. Activision documents separate cache procedures for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Steam, Battle.net, and Microsoft Store installations. Use the procedure for your exact platform and launcher.

Saved game data is different. Activision warns that deleting saved data is permanent and recommends backing it up before deletion. A storage-cleanup task normally needs neither local-save deletion nor cloud-save removal. If a troubleshooting guide asks you to delete saved data, stop and confirm whether it means a temporary cache or an actual save file.

Verify files after changing content

Use verification when the game reports missing files, crashes at startup, or shows a mode you removed as installed.

  1. Restart the console or PC launcher after the uninstall completes.
  2. Reopen the game’s content manager and confirm the selected tile is listed as uninstalled.
  3. Check the platform’s free-space screen.
  4. If errors remain, run the launcher’s repair tool: Verify integrity of game files on Steam, Battle.net’s repair and cache guidance, or Verify and Repair in the Microsoft Store/Xbox app workflow.
  5. Allow the repair to finish before launching. It can redownload damaged files and temporarily require additional working space.

If verification restores a component you intentionally removed, return to the content manager and uninstall that component again after the repair. If free space does not change, empty the platform’s recycle bin or temporary-download queue where applicable and restart once more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which cleanup option should you choose?

Action Storage reclaimed Can you redownload it? Graphics or bandwidth impact Saved-data risk Best use
Uninstall an unused mode in Manage Files Usually the largest immediate reduction for that component; the exact amount varies by title and platform. Yes, through the game or platform store. No effect on remaining modes. Normally none when using the content manager. You no longer play Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, or another listed mode.
Remove language packs Reclaims the package size for languages you do not use. Yes, if the pack remains available for your release. Only the removed language is affected. Normally none. You installed multiple voice or text languages.
Remove high-resolution assets Reclaims optional texture-package space. Usually yes through Manage Files or the store. Lower texture detail may result. Normally none. You need room and can accept less visual detail.
Set On-Demand High-Quality Streaming to Minimal Can reduce direct local-storage use and downloads, depending on the title. Not applicable; it is a setting. Lower quality and bandwidth use. None. You have limited bandwidth or want a smaller local texture footprint.
Clear cache Usually little or temporary space reclaimed. Not applicable. No intended graphics change. None when following the platform cache procedure. Corruption, freezes, connection problems, or slow loading.
Delete saved data May reclaim a small amount of space. Not necessarily; deletion can be permanent. No intended graphics change. High; back up first. Only a deliberate save-reset or advanced troubleshooting case.

Why Call of Duty can occupy so much space

Call of Duty is a collection of large, separately managed assets rather than one uniform file. An installation can contain an annual title, Warzone, several campaigns or multiplayer packages, Zombies, multiple languages, high-resolution textures, shader data, and update files. A patch may also need temporary working space while it replaces older data.

The major content reorganization described in the official roadmap was dated August 21, 2024, and the roadmap identified Black Ops 6’s launch as October 25, 2024. Those dates describe that release cycle, not a permanent install-size guarantee. File requirements continue to vary by edition, platform, region, language selection, and later updates.

Older content is not necessarily removed automatically when a new season or annual title arrives. Review the Manage Files list after major updates and uninstall packages you no longer use.

When an external SSD makes sense

If selective uninstalling still leaves too little room for the games you actively play, a portable external SSD can expand capacity. Treat it as a compatibility decision, not a universal fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check whether your PlayStation, Xbox, or PC supports the drive’s interface and capacity.
  • Confirm whether the platform can run current-generation games directly from that drive or only store them there.
  • Use a drive with sustained performance suitable for large game transfers, not merely the cheapest capacity rating.
  • Format it only through the platform’s own storage prompt unless you have a specific PC file-system requirement.
  • Leave free space on both the internal drive and the external drive for updates and temporary files.

Move or reinstall Call of Duty through the platform’s storage manager. Do not drag installed folders between drives unless the launcher provides a supported move command.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game still says there is not enough space

  • Check every installed Call of Duty entry and add-on, not just the shortcut shown on the home screen.
  • Look for a pending update that needs temporary space greater than the final patch size.
  • Empty the platform’s deleted-items or temporary-download area if it has one.
  • Restart the platform so its storage index is rebuilt.
  • Move another large game temporarily, then retry the Call of Duty content change.

A removed mode reappears

An update or repair may have reinstalled a dependency. Open Manage Files again, remove the mode, and verify that the launcher is not set to install all available content automatically. Keep shared files that the remaining modes require.

The game crashes after an uninstall

Run the platform’s file-verification or repair command. If the repair completes but crashes continue, clear the appropriate temporary cache, restart, and check for graphics-driver or system updates. Do not delete saved data as a first response.

Streaming causes stutter or uses too much data

Change On-Demand High-Quality Streaming from Optimized to Minimal, then restart the game if prompted. This reduces bandwidth use but can lower texture quality. If your connection is metered, also check the platform’s background-download and automatic-update settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find Manage Files

Update the game and restart it. Some releases expose the control as Game Installs, while others show it under a settings or content-management tile. If the menu remains unavailable, use the launcher’s supported add-on manager and avoid deleting folders manually.

A repeatable storage-maintenance routine

  1. Check the platform’s free-space screen before installing a new season or annual title.
  2. Open Call of Duty’s Manage Files screen and remove modes, languages, and optional assets you have not used recently.
  3. Review Warzone separately; install it only if you play it.
  4. Choose Optimized or Minimal streaming according to your bandwidth, visual-quality, and local-storage priorities.
  5. Keep enough headroom for updates and temporary patch files.
  6. After every change, restart the launcher or console and confirm the new free-space total.
  7. Use verification or repair for corruption, not random folder deletion.
  8. Back up saves before any action that explicitly deletes saved data.

This approach preserves the modes you actually play, avoids unnecessary redownloads, and separates ordinary storage management from troubleshooting actions that can affect data.
