Plan on at least 115 GB of free SSD space for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on PC at launch, plus a buffer for mandatory updates. Activision lists 115 GB for its minimum, recommended and ray-tracing PC configurations. Official PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo pages reviewed for this guide do not publish a final console install-size figure, so console players should use the platform’s storage manager, remove or archive files they no longer need, and leave substantially more room than the current download prompt requests.
The safest cleanup is to delete unused games, captures, temporary files and old media—not saved-data storage. A disc does not eliminate the local install: the game installs from the disc and then receives updates. MW4 also uses texture streaming in every mode, which reduces the amount kept on the drive but makes an internet connection important for supported online play.
How much storage Modern Warfare 4 needs
For Windows PC, the published launch requirement is 115 GB on an SSD. Activision’s 2026 requirements page gives that figure for minimum, recommended and ray-tracing configurations, and its technical article repeats it. Both documents warn that mandatory updates can require additional space. Treat 115 GB as the amount needed for the launch installation, not as a permanent upper limit.

Console space can change as patches, language files and optional content are published. Community reports of a particular size are anecdotal; the reliable number for your system is the one shown in its Manage Content or download screen, checked against the latest Activision and platform notices.

Why the free-space requirement is larger than the download
Installation needs working room
A launcher may download compressed data, unpack it, verify files and replace older versions. During that process it can need temporary working space in addition to the final installed files. Updates can also stage a new file before removing the old one, so a drive with exactly the headline size can still fail.
Mandatory updates are separate storage events
Activision states that additional storage may be required for mandatory updates. Keep a reserve after the first installation; do not immediately fill the drive with another large game or a video library.
Texture streaming trades disk space for connectivity
Activision says MW4 uses texture streaming across all game modes to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall hard-drive footprint. Streaming does not mean zero local storage: the base installation and cached data remain on the drive. Activision’s FAQ also says a continuous internet connection is required for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ because of texture streaming.

A disc still installs the game
On consoles with a disc drive, the disc is not a way around storage limits. Activision’s installation guidance says a disc installation copies the game and then requires updates. Free the required local space before inserting the disc or starting the update.
Check space before deleting anything
- Open the storage page for the drive or console that will hold MW4. On a PC, check the individual SSD rather than the combined capacity of all drives.
- Compare free space with 115 GB on PC, then add a personal update buffer. On consoles, use the size shown by the current download or install prompt and leave additional headroom because no final official size table is published.
- Sort the storage list by size. Large games, capture clips, screenshots and downloaded media usually recover space faster than deleting small application files.
- Identify where saved data is listed. Delete game or application installations through the platform’s game-management controls, not through the saved-data menu.
- After cleanup, empty the Windows Recycle Bin or the console’s equivalent confirmation queue, then check the free-space figure again.
If the free-space number drops unexpectedly, pause the MW4 download and inspect temporary downloads, duplicate captures and another user profile before deleting more. A launcher can reserve space while it prepares an install, so the available figure may move during setup.

Free space on a Windows PC
1. Confirm the target SSD in your launcher
Activision documents Battle.net, Steam and the Xbox PC app as PC installation routes. Open the MW4 install dialog in the launcher you use and note the selected drive and folder. The drive shown there must have the free space; having 115 GB on a different disk does not satisfy the requirement.
2. Use Windows Storage settings
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Review Installed apps, Temporary files, Documents, Pictures, Videos and other categories.
- Select only items you understand. Temporary update files, delivery-optimization data and old installation files can be large, but read the description and date before confirming.
- Uninstall games or applications you no longer use. Use the app’s uninstall control instead of manually deleting its folder, which can leave launcher records and partial files behind.
Review the Recycle Bin separately; deleting a file does not recover its space until the bin is emptied. Move personal videos, photos and archived installers to another disk before removing them from the MW4 SSD.

3. Check other game libraries and captures
Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox PC app can each have libraries on different folders or drives. Check every library for old titles, beta files and duplicate installs. In the Windows Xbox Game Bar or your capture application, sort recordings by size and copy anything you want to keep before deleting it.
4. Start the installation only after the buffer is available
Return to the launcher’s MW4 install screen, verify the destination once more and begin the download. If the launcher reports insufficient space despite the Storage page showing enough, close other launchers, clear their paused downloads and restart them; the launcher may be counting reserved or temporary files.
5. Add a compatible SSD when cleanup is not enough
A 1 TB SSD is a practical capacity choice for a PC that needs room for MW4 and other games, but it is not an Activision requirement. Before buying, check whether the computer accepts an M.2 NVMe drive or a 2.5-inch SATA drive, whether a slot or bay is free, and whether the motherboard, power cable and mounting hardware support it. An SSD that cannot connect to the system will not solve the storage problem.

Compare usable capacity after formatting, interface compatibility, sustained read/write behavior, warranty and price per terabyte. For MW4, install on an SSD that the launcher and operating system can use reliably; headline sequential-speed numbers do not replace a compatible interface or an available slot.
Free space on PlayStation 5
1. Find the largest items
- Open Settings > Storage to view Console Storage and any USB extended storage or approved M.2 expansion drive.
- Open Games and Apps, then sort or inspect by size.
- Select games, add-ons or captures you no longer need and choose the delete or move command shown by the console.
Compatible games can be moved to USB extended storage for archiving, while an approved M.2 expansion drive can provide playable space. Keep the active MW4 installation on storage supported for PS5 play.
2. Protect saved data
Use the game-and-app deletion controls for an installation. Do not select Saved Data merely to remove a game. Saved data is a separate storage category; deleting it can remove local progress even when the game itself is still available to reinstall.
3. Leave update headroom
The official PlayStation page does not provide a fixed MW4 console size and warns that additional storage may be required. Do not treat the first download figure as the final space requirement. Recheck Storage after the installation and before a major update.
4. Install from your library
Activision’s console instructions use Game Library > Your Collection > Modern Warfare 4 > Download. The game installs automatically after you select it. If the download is queued but does not start, check free space, network status and whether another title is already using the download queue.

Free space on Xbox Series X|S
1. Use Free up space
- Open My games & apps > Manage > Free up space. Wording can vary slightly with a system update.
- Review unused games, captures, add-ons and remaining installation files.
- Delete items you have backed up or can redownload, or choose the move option when offered.
Captures are often the quickest safe target. Check the capture list first if you need to preserve a clip, because deleting it from the console may not be reversible.
2. Use the correct storage for the active game
Move games to a compatible expansion card or external drive when appropriate, but keep the active MW4 installation on supported internal storage or a compatible expansion card. A USB drive can be useful for storing and moving titles, yet a game may need to return to supported storage before it can run.
3. Install all required content
Activision’s Xbox path is My games & apps > Full library > All owned games > Modern Warfare 4 > Install all. Xbox’s official listing warns that additional storage may be required, so check the free-space figure after the base install and before updates.
Free space on Nintendo Switch 2
Activision says an eShop preorder downloads before launch and needs a small launch update. The official material reviewed for MW4 does not publish a final console install-size number, so do not reserve a specific figure based on an unverified community post.

- Archive software you no longer play. Archiving removes the local software while retaining its icon and save data so it can be downloaded again.
- Delete screenshots and video clips after copying anything you want to keep.
- Confirm that the microSD Express card has enough usable capacity for the download and launch update, then start the eShop download.
Because the final size is not stated in the reviewed official sources, check Data Management again immediately before launch and after the update.

What you can remove without deleting MW4 saves
- Unused full games: Delete the application from the platform’s Games and Apps or Installed Apps screen. Reinstalling later normally retrieves the software again from your library.
- Captures: Remove screenshots and video clips after copying them to external storage or cloud storage if you need an archive.
- Temporary and cached files: Use Windows Storage or the console’s built-in cleanup commands. Do not manually delete unknown folders inside the MW4 installation.
- Old installers and duplicate libraries: On PC, check every launcher for a second copy or a paused download before removing it.
- Optional add-ons you recognize: Remove a language pack or add-on only when the platform identifies it clearly and you know you can redownload it. The official material reviewed does not provide a definitive list of removable MW4 content packs, so do not guess based on a folder name.
Saved data is separate from installed game data on PlayStation and Xbox. On PC, save locations can vary by launcher and cloud-sync settings; verify synchronization before deleting any user-profile folder. If you are unsure, keep the save data and remove only the main application or captures.

Storage expansion solves a persistent capacity problem, but the right choice depends on the platform.

For a PC, identify the motherboard’s storage standard before purchasing. For a console, verify the exact model and installation location in the manufacturer’s current support documentation. Do not assume that a drive suitable for one platform is suitable for another.
Troubleshooting an “insufficient storage” error
The drive has 115 GB free, but PC installation still fails
- Check that the launcher’s destination is the same SSD you measured.
- Free additional room for temporary unpacking and mandatory updates.
- Close other launchers that may be reserving space for paused downloads.
- Empty the Recycle Bin and restart the launcher so it refreshes the available-space calculation.
The console shows space but the update will not install
- Inspect the console’s game-management screen for reserved space, duplicate MW4 entries or a queued update.
- Delete or move another large game rather than saved-data storage.
- Restart the console and check the free-space figure again before retrying.
- If the error persists, check the platform’s current support notice; update sizes can change after launch.
The installation stops after using a disc
Free local storage before retrying. Activision’s installation guidance requires the disc copy and subsequent updates to be installed locally; the disc does not function as an external game drive.
Texture streaming causes connection concerns
MW4’s texture-streaming design reduces the amount of visual data stored permanently, but Activision requires a continuous internet connection for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ. A larger SSD will not remove that network requirement.
