If a PlayStation Plus Catalog game will not install because your PS5 is full, open Settings > Storage first. The quickest reversible fix is deleting an installed game you are not playing; Sony allows purchased games to be downloaded again from your library. If the game offers Customize, remove unused add-ons or completed portions instead. To keep the installation, move it to compatible USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD. For supported games and eligible memberships, streaming avoids a local installation altogether.
Upload the game’s save data to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before deleting or moving anything. Cloud storage supports up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data under Sony’s current support documentation.
Check what is filling the PS5 before deleting anything
On the console, open Settings > Storage. The storage screen separates usage into games and apps, media, and saved data. Start here rather than guessing which title is responsible: a large game installation, a collection of captures, or another category may be consuming the space needed for the new download.

Record how much free space the catalog game requires on its information screen, then leave additional headroom for patches and temporary installation files. The exact requirement varies by title and update; Sony does not publish one average game-size figure that applies to the catalog.

Protect your saves first
Game installations and saved data are managed separately, but a storage cleanup is still a good time to make a cloud backup. In the PS5 saved-data controls, select the game and upload its save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage. Sony documents a limit of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data.
Wait for the upload to complete before deleting or moving the game. This protects progress if you later reinstall the title, switch consoles, or encounter a local-storage problem. Cloud backup does not preserve the game installation itself; it preserves the save files that the game reads after you reinstall or copy the title back.
Use Customize to remove only what you no longer need
Some games expose a Customize command in the Games and Apps storage view. Select the game and inspect that command before choosing full deletion.

What Customize can remove
- Unused add-ons, such as language packs or modes you did not install for regular play.
- Completed portions that the game identifies as removable.
- Other optional data the title’s developer has separated from the core installation.
The available items differ by game. If Customize is not shown, or if it lists nothing removable, that title does not provide partial-data controls through the PS5 storage interface. Do not assume every game can be reduced this way.
When partial cleanup is the best choice
Choose Customize when you want to keep the game immediately playable and the listed add-on or completed section is large enough to meet the installation requirement. It avoids a full download later, but it may recover less space than deleting the whole game.
Delete an installed game and redownload it later
Deleting the installation is usually the fastest way to recover its full disk allocation. Sony states that deleting a game or application does not remove access to it: you can redownload purchases from your game library whenever you like. The same principle applies to a catalog title while it remains available through an eligible PlayStation Plus membership.

Exact deletion path
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Choose Console Storage.
- Open Games and Apps.
- Select the game or application you no longer need.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
The installation is removed immediately after confirmation. Your cloud-uploaded save remains available for the next installation. If the game was obtained through the catalog rather than purchased outright, you must still have the required membership and the title must remain in the catalog when you reinstall it.
Reinstalling after the cleanup
Open the game library or return to PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Game Catalog, select the eligible title, and choose Download. Download time depends on the title, your connection, and current network conditions. A game leaving the catalog can prevent a later catalog download even though a save file remains in cloud storage.
Move games to USB extended storage instead of deleting them
A compatible USB extended-storage drive is useful when you want to archive several games without downloading them again. Sony specifies a supported capacity range of 250 GB to 8 TB for a compatible SuperSpeed USB drive.
What USB storage can and cannot do
- Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games can be stored there, but they must be copied back to the PS5 console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before you can play them.
- Moving a title is faster than downloading it again when you decide to play it, but the copy-back operation still takes time.
- The drive must meet Sony’s SuperSpeed USB and capacity requirements; ordinary unsupported USB media may not be accepted as extended storage.
Move procedure
- Connect the compatible USB drive to the PS5 and allow the console to recognize or format it as extended storage if prompted. Formatting erases data already on that drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Open the PS5 storage management screen and choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the games you want to transfer, check the destination, and confirm the move.
- Keep the drive connected and powered while the transfer runs. Do not unplug it during a move or while a game is being copied back.
For a PS5 game, use the same Games and Apps management controls to move or copy it back to console storage or M.2 storage before launching. A PS4 game can remain on USB and launch from there, subject to the game’s own requirements.
Add an M.2 SSD when you need playable PS5 expansion
An installed, compatible M.2 NVMe SSD provides additional space from which the PS5 can download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. This differs from USB storage, which is primarily an archive for PS5 titles.
Why choose M.2 storage
- PS5 games can run directly from the M.2 drive after installation.
- New catalog downloads can be directed to expanded storage instead of the internal SSD.
- Moving a game to M.2 avoids downloading it again and avoids the copy-back step required by USB storage.
Compatibility and installation requirements
The SSD must satisfy Sony’s current M.2 performance, physical-size, and installation requirements, including the required heat-dissipation arrangement. Requirements can change with console software and hardware revisions, so check Sony’s current M.2 support documentation for the exact interface, dimensions, speed, and installation instructions before buying or fitting a drive.

Turn the PS5 off, install the drive according to Sony’s procedure, and format it when the console requests that step. Formatting removes existing data on the SSD. If the console rejects the drive, do not force the installation; recheck the model, heatsink dimensions, and other current compatibility conditions.
Stream a catalog game when the title and membership support it
Streaming can solve a space shortage without installing the game. On a supported catalog title, select Stream instead of Download. The option is conditional: not every catalog game streams, availability varies by region, and the required PlayStation Plus membership tier may differ from the one you have.
Connection requirements
Sony lists 5 Mbps minimum broadband for game streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those figures are minimum service requirements, not a guarantee of consistent image quality or latency. A stable connection, low congestion, and a wired network connection where practical can improve reliability.
Streaming trade-offs
- No local game installation is needed, so console storage is not consumed by the title.
- You remain dependent on broadband while playing; an interruption ends or disrupts the session.
- Streaming features and performance can differ from a local installation.
- Save handling still matters. Upload existing saves before changing a local installation, and allow the streamed game to synchronize progress when you finish.
If Stream is missing, verify the title’s current catalog listing, your membership eligibility, and regional availability before troubleshooting the console’s storage.
Compare every storage option before choosing

Upfront hardware prices are not stated in Sony’s storage documentation and vary by drive model and market. Capacity alone does not establish compatibility: USB storage must meet the SuperSpeed and size requirements, while an M.2 SSD must meet Sony’s current performance, dimensions, and installation rules.
Choose the least disruptive fix
You need space immediately and do not care which installed game leaves
Back up the save, delete one currently unused installation, and download the catalog title. This is the shortest path when you have a reliable broadband connection and can tolerate a later redownload.

You expect to return to the game soon
Use Customize if it exposes removable content. Otherwise move the game to USB extended storage. Choose USB when archival capacity matters more than instant play; remember that a PS5 title must be copied back before launching.

An M.2 SSD is the most direct expansion because compatible PS5 games can remain playable on it. Confirm the current compatibility and installation requirements before purchasing.
Your connection is fast and the title offers Stream
Streaming avoids a download and preserves local storage. It is practical for supported catalog games when your membership, region, and network meet the service requirements, but it is not a universal replacement for local play.

The PS5 still says there is not enough space
Return to Settings > Storage and inspect all categories, not only Games and Apps. Remove unneeded installations, media, or other data from the category consuming the space. If you deleted a title but the free-space figure has not refreshed, wait for the storage screen to update and restart the console before repeating the deletion.
Customize does not appear
That game does not expose removable portions through the PS5 interface, or there are no optional components currently installed. Use full deletion, USB moving, or M.2 expansion instead.

This is expected behavior. Copy the game from USB extended storage to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from that destination. Only compatible PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.

The USB drive is rejected
Check that it is a SuperSpeed USB device within Sony’s 250 GB–8 TB range. A drive used for another purpose may need formatting as extended storage, which erases its existing contents. Back up unrelated files before formatting.
The M.2 SSD is not detected or cannot be formatted
Verify the current Sony requirements for interface, sustained performance, physical dimensions, and heat dissipation. Reinstall the drive with the console powered off and ensure the cover and heatsink fit correctly. Do not rely on capacity alone to determine compatibility.
There is no Stream button
Check whether the specific catalog title supports streaming in your region and whether your membership tier includes the feature. If both are eligible, test the broadband connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum, remembering that 15 Mbps is listed for 1080p and that stability affects the actual result.

The game resumes without my progress
Confirm that the save upload completed before the cleanup. After reinstalling or copying the title, allow the console to download the cloud save and use the same user account that created it. A cloud save cannot restore progress that was never uploaded.
A repeatable workflow for every future catalog installation
- Open Settings > Storage and identify the category and title using the space.
- Upload the relevant save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- Try Customize on a suitable game before removing the complete installation.
- If partial cleanup is unavailable, decide between deleting, moving to USB, moving to M.2, or streaming.
- For USB, remember that PS5 games require a copy-back before play; for M.2, verify compatibility before installation.
- Return to PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Game Catalog and select Download or, when offered and eligible, Stream.
- After the game starts, verify that your save is present before deleting the backup or changing storage again.
Bottom line
Start with the storage screen and a save backup. Delete an unused game when you need the fastest reversible recovery, use Customize when the title supports selective removal, archive PS5 games on USB when you can accept copying them back, and install a compatible M.2 SSD when you want expanded storage that can launch PS5 games. Streaming is the no-install option, but only for supported titles, eligible memberships, and a sufficiently stable connection.
