Free space without losing progress by removing unused installation files first, moving games you want to keep to the right kind of storage, and checking the actual GTA 6 or Call of Duty install screen instead of relying on online size claims. On PS5, use Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. A USB extended-storage drive can archive PS5 games but cannot run them directly; an installed M.2 SSD can launch them. On Xbox, use the console’s storage-management screen for uninstalling and verify that any expansion card is compatible with Xbox Series X|S.
Check the real space requirement before deleting anything
Neither an official PlayStation source nor the retrieved Call of Duty support material publishes a definitive, universal GTA 6 console install size. Call of Duty’s footprint also changes with the game version, platform, language files, texture packs, campaign or multiplayer components, and updates. Read the installation screen on your own PS5 or Xbox and leave room for patches rather than trusting an unsourced number.
Storage shown as free today is not necessarily enough for tomorrow’s update. A console may need temporary working space while it downloads, verifies, and applies a patch. The safest approach is to create a meaningful buffer, then recheck free space before a large pre-load or update. Do not delete saved data, captures, or user profiles merely because a game installation is large.
Free space on PS5, step by step
1. Open the correct storage screen
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Storage, then Console Storage.
- Open Games and Apps to see installed titles and their local installation data.
- Sort or inspect the list and select games, add-ons, or content you no longer need.
PlayStation’s storage guidance identifies this area for deleting existing data or moving games to USB extended storage or installed M.2 SSD storage. Menu labels can change with system software, but the Games and Apps category is the relevant place to manage game installations.

- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
2. Delete a game you can download again
Choose Delete for a title you are willing to reinstall later. Deleting the local installation does not revoke a purchase: PlayStation says deleted purchases remain available to download again from the game library. Reinstallation will require download time and enough free space for the complete build plus any update applied during setup.
Use this option for games you play rarely, titles you can access through a disc, or large games that are not needed while preparing for GTA 6. Record any custom settings you may want to reproduce after reinstalling; those settings can be stored separately from the game itself depending on the title.
3. Move games to a USB extended-storage drive
A PS5 external storage drive is useful when you want to keep game data without occupying the console’s internal space. PlayStation states that you can freely move games between PS5 console storage, a connected USB extended-storage device, and added M.2 SSD storage.

The important limitation is playability. PlayStation’s instruction is explicit: “To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage back to your PS5 console storage.” USB therefore works as an archive for PS5 titles, not as a place from which those titles launch. Copying a large game back can take substantial time, so archive games you do not expect to play immediately.
PS4 games behave differently: PlayStation says they can be played directly from USB extended storage. If your objective is to free internal space while keeping older PS4 titles ready to launch, USB is more convenient than it is for PS5 games.

4. Install an M.2 SSD for games that must remain playable
An installed PS5 M.2 SSD is the PS5 expansion route for keeping compatible games available without copying them back from USB. PlayStation says an added M.2 SSD can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games.
Before buying or installing one, check the current PlayStation compatibility requirements for your console software version and the specific drive. Requirements and supported models can change, and an M.2 that does not meet them may not be accepted or may not deliver the expected behavior. After installation, use the storage controls to move eligible games from console storage or USB to the M.2 volume.

Some supported PS5 games let you remove individual modes or content components instead of uninstalling the whole title. If a Call of Duty installation exposes separate campaign, multiplayer, co-operative, language, or texture components, keep only the portions you use. The exact choices depend on the game build and current content-management screen, so read each package name before confirming.
6. Keep saves and captures separate from installation data
When your goal is storage recovery, stay in Games and Apps and remove only installation data. PS5 save-data and capture-management controls are separate. Do not select an option labeled saved data when you mean to remove a game, and copy or back up irreplaceable screenshots and video clips before performing a broad cleanup.
After deleting a title, verify that its save data still appears in the save-data area before reinstalling. This check is especially useful for games that store settings or profiles locally rather than in the installation package.

Free up Xbox storage safely
1. Use the dashboard’s storage-management screen
- Open the Xbox dashboard’s storage or game-management area. The exact label can vary by dashboard version.
- Review installed games and add-ons, sorting by size if that option is available.
- Select a title you no longer need locally and choose the uninstall or remove command shown by the console.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully. Remove the game installation, not any separately listed saved-data or profile item.
- Return to the storage overview and confirm that the reclaimed capacity is now listed as free.
Uninstalling is the quickest way to clear space when you can download the title again later. Keep a note of any optional packs you intentionally retain so that a future reinstall does not restore content you do not use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Use an Xbox storage expansion card when games must stay ready
Microsoft provides an official support path titled Use a storage expansion card with Xbox Series X|S. An expansion card is intended for owners who want additional console-compatible storage without repeatedly uninstalling and downloading large games.
Compatibility is essential. Before purchasing, verify that the card is approved for your exact Xbox Series X or Series S model and current console software. A generic external drive or a card designed for another Xbox generation is not automatically equivalent to a Series X|S expansion card. Follow the console’s on-screen setup and Microsoft’s current support instructions after connecting it.
Choose an expansion card when copy or download time is more disruptive than the upfront hardware expense. Choose uninstalling when you need immediate free space and do not mind restoring a title later. The right answer depends on how often you rotate games and how reliable your internet connection is, not on a single advertised capacity number.
3. Recheck space after updates
Call of Duty and other live games can add or replace content after an initial install. Check the Xbox storage screen again after a major update, and remove unused add-ons rather than assuming the original installation size remains unchanged.

Call of Duty: reduce the footprint without removing what you play
Call of Duty installations are modular, so first determine which parts you actually use. If the game’s content-management screen lists modes or packs separately, uninstall only the portions you do not play and leave the core files and preferred modes installed. Package names differ by platform and release, so confirm each selection before applying it.
Activision’s Black Ops 6 installation page states that, on July 7, 2026, older files in the Call of Duty experience would be automatically removed to help free storage space. That dated cleanup does not guarantee a fixed size for every console or account: later updates, language files, high-resolution assets, and newly added modes can change the result. After the automatic removal, open the console’s storage screen and the game’s own content manager to see what remains.
If an update refuses to start, do not immediately delete the entire game. Remove optional packs first, clear space with another rarely used installation, or move a PS5 title to USB archive storage. Preserve the mode you need for an imminent session and schedule larger downloads for a time when the console can remain online.

- Open the GTA 6 store, pre-load, or installation screen when it becomes available and record the required space shown there.
- Keep additional room for patches and temporary installation files instead of targeting the exact displayed number.
- On PS5, decide whether to delete infrequently played games, archive PS5 games to USB, or move them to an M.2 SSD.
- On Xbox Series X|S, decide whether uninstalling is acceptable or whether a verified expansion card better fits your rotation.
Do not remove a game you need for a scheduled update until you have checked whether the update requires the existing installation. A staged cleanup—optional Call of Duty packs first, archived games second, full deletions last—reduces the chance of having to redownload several large titles at once.

Choose between deleting, archiving, and expanding
| Your situation | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need space today and rarely revisit the game | Delete the installation | It returns the most local capacity immediately; reinstall later from the available library or media |
| You want to keep a PS5 game but will not play it soon | Move it to USB extended storage | It avoids a new download, with the requirement to copy the PS5 data back before playing |
| You rotate several PS5 games every week | Install a compatible M.2 SSD | Compatible games can remain stored and launch without USB shuffling |
| You play PS4 games regularly on PS5 | Use USB extended storage | PlayStation says PS4 games can launch directly from that storage |
| You use Xbox Series X|S and want more ready-to-play capacity | Verify and install an Xbox storage expansion card | It is the Xbox-supported expansion route; compatibility must be checked before purchase |
| Your internet connection is slow or capped | Prefer archiving or expansion over repeated deletion | Copying or retaining local files can avoid repeated full downloads, although PS5 USB archives still require a copy back before play |
Troubleshooting common storage problems
The console still reports too little free space
Reopen the storage overview after the delete or move operation finishes. A download, update, capture, or queued installation may have consumed the space you just created. Check both installed games and add-ons, then remove an unused optional pack rather than deleting a complete title if the game supports modular content.
A PS5 game on USB will not start
This is expected behavior for PS5 titles on USB extended storage. Copy the game data back to PS5 console storage before launching it. If you want the game to remain playable from expanded storage, move it to a compatible installed M.2 SSD instead.
The M.2 SSD is not available as a move destination
Confirm that the drive meets the current PlayStation compatibility requirements and that the console recognizes it as installed M.2 storage. If it does not appear, stop moving data until the hardware and system software are recognized correctly; an incompatible drive will not become suitable through formatting alone.
An Xbox expansion card is not recognized
Verify the card’s compatibility with Xbox Series X|S and follow the current Microsoft support procedure for the card. Do not assume that a USB storage device or an older-generation accessory provides the same expansion behavior. If the card is not listed by the console after the documented setup, avoid moving your only copy of an important game until the device is detected.
You are worried that deleting a game erased your progress
On PS5, the Games and Apps deletion control targets the installed game data, while saved-data controls are separate. Check the save-data area before reinstalling and avoid any command that explicitly says saved data. On Xbox, read each confirmation dialog and use the game uninstall command rather than a saved-data or profile-management command.
Quick Recap
A practical maintenance routine
- Check free space before a major GTA 6 or Call of Duty update, not only after the download fails.
- Remove unused Call of Duty content packs when the game exposes them individually.
- Keep PS5 games you may play soon on console or M.2 storage; use USB as an archive for titles that can wait.
- Use the PS5 Games and Apps screen for installations and separate save-data or capture screens for personal files.
- Verify the latest M.2 SSD requirements before buying or reinstalling a drive.
- Verify Xbox Series X|S expansion-card compatibility before purchase and setup.
- Recheck storage after automatic or major content changes, including the Black Ops 6 cleanup dated July 7, 2026.
- Use the actual install screen for GTA 6 and leave patch headroom; do not plan around an unofficial size.
