When a Nintendo Switch is short on space, first check both storage locations in Data Management. You can organize unused software without deleting its save data, move installed software to a compatible microSD card, and remove backed-up screenshots or videos. Because an eShop download may also need room for updates and other data, make space before you buy or begin the download.

1. Check which storage is full

The Switch can use its internal system storage and an inserted microSD card. A download can fail when either location lacks room for the software or its required update, so check both before deleting anything.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Review the free-space indicators for System Memory and the inserted microSD card.

Nintendo documents this path for checking available capacity. The screen also helps you decide whether to clean the console, the card, or both. If no card is inserted, only system-memory capacity will be shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to the location of each item. Removing a game installed on system memory does not increase the free space on the card, and deleting a card-based game does not enlarge system memory. If you are troubleshooting a failed download, check the two indicators again after each cleanup step rather than assuming all storage is interchangeable.

2. Organize games you are not playing

Organize Software is the safest way to remove a large download while keeping the game in your library. The downloaded game data is removed from storage, but the software icon and save data remain on the console. You can download the title again later with the Nintendo Account that purchased it, as long as Nintendo still offers that title for redownload and the account remains linked.

Use organization for an installed game you want to keep

  1. Open HOME > Settings > Data Management.
  2. Choose the software-management option and select the game you no longer need installed.
  3. Choose Organize Software and confirm.

The HOME Menu icon remaining after organization is expected. It is a library entry, not proof that the full game download is still occupying the same space. Selecting the icon later starts the redownload process, subject to the title’s continued availability and your Nintendo Account.

Organization is useful for a game you want to keep associated with the console but do not expect to play today. It also avoids the more serious mistake of deleting the save-data record. The icon and progress can remain while the larger downloadable software is absent.

Why organization is preferable to deleting save data

Save data records your progress separately from the downloaded software. Organizing software targets the download, not that progress. Do not use the console’s save-data deletion controls as a storage shortcut: deleting save data is a different action and can remove your local progress.

Organizing is not an offline backup of the game. When you select the icon in the future, the Switch must download the software again, and the destination must have enough free space for the software and any required update data.

3. Move installed software between system memory and microSD

If a supported microSD card is installed, the Switch can move eligible software between the two storage locations. This lets you free internal space without removing a game from the console altogether.

  1. Go to HOME > Settings > Data Management.
  2. Select Move Data Between System/microSD.
  3. Choose whether to move data from system memory to the microSD card or from the card to system memory.
  4. Select the software to move and confirm the operation.

Nintendo notes that save data cannot be moved by this control, and some update data may also be ineligible. The move applies to the software data the system allows; it does not relocate your saves to the card. If the destination lacks enough capacity, organize another title or clear captures first.

Moving is different from organizing. A moved game remains installed and available from the HOME Menu, while organized software has its downloaded files removed and must be downloaded again. Use the move command when the card has room and you want to keep the title ready to launch. If you are only trying to make temporary room, organization may free more space.

4. Clear screenshots and videos

Captures can consume substantial space over time, especially video clips. Copy anything you want to keep before deleting it.

Delete captures from Album

  1. Open Album from the HOME Menu.
  2. Open an individual screenshot or video and choose the delete command, or select multiple items for a batch deletion.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Album supports deleting one item at a time or several selected items together. Use the selection view when you want to keep a few captures while removing an older group. This is often the quickest way to reclaim a modest amount of space without touching installed games or save data.

Manage captures from Settings

You can also open HOME > Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos. Nintendo’s management controls let you copy captures from either system memory or microSD to a microSD card, computer, or phone, then delete the originals. Copy first when the files are your only record; deletion is not a backup.

Review both storage locations in the capture manager. A card can contain older videos even when the console’s Album looks clear, and system memory can hold captures even when your game library is on the card. You can choose individual files, batches, or broader deletion options, so verify the selection before confirming.

5. Choose a compatible Nintendo Switch microSD card

Nintendo supports the following card families and capacities for Switch storage:

Card type Supported capacity Typical use on Switch
microSD Up to 2GB Can store supported Switch data, but offers very little room for modern downloads.
microSDHC 4GB–32GB Suitable only for a small installed library or captures.
microSDXC 64GB–2TB The practical range for expanding space for downloaded software, additional content, updates and captures.

Nintendo recommends a UHS-I card with a read speed of 60–95MB/s. The recommendation describes read performance, not a promise that every card will load every game identically. Choose a card explicitly rated for the Nintendo Switch use case and within the supported 64GB–2TB microSDXC range when you need substantial expansion.

The card is sold separately, and Nintendo does not specify one brand or one universal price. Compare cards by compatibility, capacity, speed rating and authenticity rather than choosing solely by the lowest cost. A card that is not genuine or does not match the supported specification can undermine the storage plan even when its label claims a large capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What belongs on the card—and what does not

  • Downloaded software can use microSD storage.
  • Downloadable additional content can use microSD storage.
  • Software update data can use microSD storage.
  • Screenshots and videos can use microSD storage.
  • Save data cannot be stored on a microSD card. It remains in the console’s system storage.

That last boundary matters when estimating capacity. A larger card gives you more room for installs and captures, but it does not move or expand the console area reserved for saves. Replacing a small card with a larger one therefore solves software and capture capacity, not a shortage of save-data space.

Match capacity to the way you play

Your situation Capacity decision Reasoning
You keep only one or two downloaded games installed and remove captures regularly. A smaller supported card may be enough. Your active software footprint is limited.
You alternate among many downloaded games. Choose more than the minimum 64GB supported microSDXC capacity. Several large installs and their updates can consume space quickly.
You keep a large capture library as well as games. Prioritize a larger card and copy older captures elsewhere. Video files reduce the room available for software.
You want the largest currently supported expansion. A microSDXC card up to 2TB is within Nintendo’s stated capacity range. It provides the most headroom, subject to the card’s authenticity and performance.

There is no Nintendo-published universal rule such as “always leave 10GB free.” Capacity needs vary by the software you install and the updates it receives. The practical rule is to leave enough room for the title you want plus possible update and other data requirements, then recheck the indicators immediately before downloading.

6. Make room before buying or downloading an eShop game

Nintendo requires sufficient free space on system memory or the microSD card for an eShop download. The initial game download is not the only demand: updates and other data can require additional capacity. Check the free-space indicators before purchasing or starting the download rather than waiting for an installation error.

A listing’s download size should not be treated as a guaranteed total requirement. An update may be released after purchase, and the system may need additional working space while data is installed. Nintendo’s guidance is to check available capacity before buying, not to rely on one fixed buffer that applies to every title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical order of operations

  1. Check both storage locations in Data Management.
  2. Delete or copy unwanted screenshots and videos.
  3. Organize software you are not currently playing but can redownload later.
  4. Move eligible installed software to the microSD card if the card has room.
  5. If the card is too small for your library, add a supported microSDXC card in the 64GB–2TB range.
  6. Recheck the available space before starting the eShop download, allowing room for later update data.

This sequence starts with reversible cleanup and uses a card purchase only when the existing storage cannot meet your library’s needs. It also avoids deleting saves when organizing software or captures would solve the immediate shortage.

7. Know what can be downloaded again

Nintendo states that organized or deleted downloaded software and DLC can be downloaded again with the Nintendo Account that bought them, provided the title is still available for redownload and that account is still linked to the console. Availability is therefore a condition, not a guarantee that every historical eShop listing will remain downloadable indefinitely.

Organizing software preserves the icon and save data locally, but it does not preserve an offline copy of the game. If you later need to play, the console must download the software again and the destination storage must have enough room. A card change or cleanup may therefore be needed before the redownload can begin.

8. Do not format a card as routine cleanup

Format microSD card is a destructive reset, not an ordinary way to remove one unwanted game. Formatting erases the card’s software data and captures. Use software organization, the move-data controls, and capture management first so you can target only what you intend to remove.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When formatting is the wrong response

  • The card contains games you can simply organize or move.
  • You have screenshots or videos that have not been copied elsewhere.
  • You are trying to solve a single failed download.
  • You have not checked whether the card’s capacity and speed match Nintendo’s supported guidance.

If you deliberately format after making backups and understanding the consequences, treat the card as empty afterward: software and captures previously stored there will need to be restored or downloaded again. Formatting is not a substitute for checking which storage location is full, and it cannot preserve data that was never copied elsewhere.

9. Fix common “not enough space” situations

The console reports too little space even after deleting a game

Confirm which location the deleted data occupied. A game on system memory does not create free space on the microSD card, and removing a card-based game does not increase system-memory capacity. Reopen Data Management and inspect both indicators.

The game icon remains after organization

That is normal. Organization removes the downloaded software data while retaining the icon and save data. Select the icon only when you are ready to redownload the title.

A move operation will not select a particular item

Nintendo excludes save data and some update data from the move control. The software may therefore move only the categories the system permits. Keep saves in system storage and use organization or capture deletion if the destination still lacks room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An eShop purchase or download needs more room than expected

Updates and other data can add to the initial requirement. Free space that barely covers the advertised download may not be enough for installation. Clear additional captures or organize another title, then check both storage indicators again.

You are considering a new card

Verify that it is a supported microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card and, for substantial expansion, that its capacity is within Nintendo’s 64GB–2TB microSDXC range. Nintendo’s recommended performance target is UHS-I with 60–95MB/s read speed. Remember that replacing or enlarging the card increases room for software and captures, not for save data.

10. A quick decision guide

Goal Use this control What remains afterward

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I free space on my Nintendo Switch for a new eShop game?

Open HOME > Settings > Data Management and check both System Memory and the inserted microSD card. Delete or copy unwanted screenshots and videos, organize software you are not playing, move eligible software to a card with room, or add a supported microSDXC card. Check the free-space indicators again before downloading because updates and other data may need extra capacity.

Can I delete a Switch game without losing my save?

Yes. Use Organize Software to remove the downloaded game data while keeping the software icon and save data. Do not use the separate save-data deletion controls. The game can be downloaded again with the purchasing Nintendo Account if the title remains available for redownload and the account is still linked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move Switch games to an SD card?

With a compatible card inserted, go to HOME > Settings > Data Management > Move Data Between System/microSD. Select the direction and software. Save data cannot be moved, and Nintendo notes that some update data is also ineligible.

What microSD card works with Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo supports microSD cards up to 2GB, microSDHC cards from 4GB to 32GB, and microSDXC cards from 64GB to 2TB. For substantial expansion, choose a Nintendo Switch-compatible UHS-I card with a recommended read speed of 60–95MB/s.

Can save data be stored on a microSD card?

No. Save data remains in the console’s system storage. A microSD card can hold downloaded software, additional content, update data, screenshots and videos, but it does not expand the space reserved for saves.

How do I delete screenshots and videos in batches?

Open Album, select multiple items and confirm deletion. You can also use HOME > Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos to copy captures to a microSD card, computer or phone before deleting them from system memory or the card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is there still a game icon after I organize the software?

The icon is retained as a library entry along with the save data. Organization removes the downloaded software files; selecting the icon later starts a redownload, provided the title is still available and the purchasing Nintendo Account remains linked.

Should I format my microSD card to free space?

Not for routine cleanup. Formatting erases all software data and captures on the card. Use Organize Software, Move Data Between System/microSD and capture-management controls first. Format only after copying anything you want to keep and accepting that the card will be empty afterward.

The Bottom Line

Start at HOME > Settings > Data Management and identify whether system memory, the microSD card, or both are full. Clear backed-up captures, organize games instead of deleting their saves, and move eligible software when the card has room. If you need more capacity, use a Nintendo Switch-compatible UHS-I microSDXC card in the supported 64GB–2TB range. Always leave room for updates and remember that save data stays in system storage.
