You can reduce the space your photos use on an iPhone without deleting them: enable iCloud Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage, provided you have enough iCloud space and the library has finished uploading. If you prefer not to use iCloud Photos, copy the originals to a computer and verify a separate backup before removing them from the iPhone. First, check whether the problem is device storage, iCloud storage, or both.
Check iPhone storage and iCloud storage separately
These are different capacity limits. iPhone storage is space on the device; iCloud storage is space in your Apple account. A full iPhone can limit downloads and updates, while a full iCloud account can stop new photos and videos from uploading.
- Check the device: Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review available space, the apps using the most storage, and any recommendations. Apple’s iPhone storage guide explains these controls.
- Check iCloud: Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud and review the storage bar and account usage. Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage; this is the account’s storage allowance, not a promise that a photo library will fit. See Apple’s iCloud storage guide.
Settings labels can vary by iOS version or region. If a label differs, use the closest current option shown on your iPhone.
Option 1: Keep photos in iCloud and optimize iPhone storage
For people who want their photo library available in Apple Photos across devices, Apple’s intended space-saving option is Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud, while smaller, space-saving versions remain on the iPhone. iOS can replace local originals with these versions as more device space is needed; the amount and timing of space recovered vary.

- Connect the iPhone to a reliable Wi-Fi network and power, especially if the library is large.
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone, then select Optimize iPhone Storage. Apple documents the setup in Manage your photo and video storage.
- Allow the library to upload. The initial sync can take time depending on the library size and internet connection.
- Check Photos’ sync status and do not rely on the cloud copy until upload is complete. Keep another backup of especially important photos: Apple says iCloud Photos items are not duplicated in iCloud Backup. See Set up and use iCloud Photos.
Important: iCloud Photos is a syncing service, not a way to remove a photo only from the phone. Deleting a photo in Photos on one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Do not delete synced photos as a local-storage cleanup step.
Option 2: Transfer photos to a computer for a local archive
If you do not want to use iCloud Photos, Apple recommends transferring photos and videos you do not want stored on the device to a computer. This gives you control over an offline archive, but you become responsible for preserving and backing up those files.

- Import or copy the photos and videos from the iPhone to a computer using a transfer method supported by your computer and device.
- Open a selection of the copied files to confirm they are readable, and check that the transfer includes the originals you intend to keep.
- Make a second copy on separate storage before removing anything from the iPhone. An external hard drive can be used as archive storage after transfer to a computer, but check compatibility and keep another copy; Apple’s guidance does not establish a particular drive or direct-drive workflow.
- Only after verifying both copies, decide whether to remove local items. If iCloud Photos is enabled, remember that deleting from Photos syncs the deletion to your other signed-in devices.

Free space without changing your photo library
If iCloud is full, the computer-transfer route may be more practical than enabling photo sync. Apple says a full iCloud account cannot back up the device to iCloud and will not upload new photos and videos to iCloud Photos. You can review iCloud usage and manage backups at Settings > [your name] > iCloud; Apple’s iCloud storage instructions explain the available controls.

Offload unused apps
Offloading removes an unused app while retaining its documents and data, unlike deleting the app and its related data. To enable automatic offloading, go to Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. You can also open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select an app, and choose its offload option. Tapping an offloaded app’s Home Screen icon can reinstall it, though the app must be available to download. See Apple’s iPhone storage guide.
Remove downloaded files and media you can get again
Review the Files app for large downloads and check offline videos or other downloaded media in the apps that stored them. Remove only items you can safely download or access again; this can free device space without touching photo originals. Apple’s storage guide also describes reviewing files and downloaded content.
