Start by checking which iCloud categories use the most space, then clear items you no longer need from categories other than Photos. If you delete a photo while iCloud Photos is on, that deletion syncs to your other devices. Optimize Storage can save space on your iPhone or iPad, but it does not reduce your iCloud usage.

How to free up iCloud storage without losing photos

The safest approach is to find out what is filling iCloud, make a separate copy of any photos you cannot afford to lose, and look for removable content outside your photo library first. Apple’s storage guidance identifies device backups, iCloud Drive, Messages attachments, Mail, and other services as possible places to review.

  1. Check your iCloud storage breakdown. On your Apple device, open the Apple Account or iCloud storage settings and review the categories and any recommendations. Labels and menu paths vary by operating-system version and language. Apple’s iCloud storage management guide describes the categories and the available recommendations.
  2. Copy irreplaceable photos before changing the library. Export or save a separate copy to a computer or another storage destination. Open a few files from that copy to check that they are readable before deleting anything from iCloud. Apple says iCloud Photos content is not duplicated in iCloud Backup, so a device backup is not a second copy of those photos. See Apple’s guidance on iCloud Photos and backup copies.
  3. Review non-photo categories. Remove only backups, files, or message attachments you recognize and no longer need. If you are unsure what a backup or file contains, keep it until you have confirmed you do not need it. Apple recommends copying or archiving important information before deleting iCloud content.
  4. Check whether Photos is part of a device backup. If iCloud Photos is off, your Photos Library may be included in iCloud Backup. Apple explains how to save photos and videos to a computer and how to manage Photos in a backup in its storage-management instructions. Turning off Photos in a backup is not the same as deleting the library, but make sure you have another copy if you need one.
  5. Delete photos only if you intend to remove them from the synced library. First confirm that your separate copy is complete. Then delete only the selected items you are willing to lose from iCloud Photos.

What happens if you delete a photo in iCloud Photos?

With iCloud Photos enabled, deleting a photo or video on one device deletes it from the other devices signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos. The deletion is a library-wide sync action, not a way to remove only the cloud copy while keeping the item in the synced library on another device. Apple states that a deleted item can normally be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days, but warns that when iCloud storage is over its limit, deleted photos may be removed immediately and unavailable there. Do not rely on Recently Deleted as your backup or recovery plan. Apple’s iCloud Photos guidance explains the sync and recovery behavior; its storage-management guide describes the full-storage exception.

Does Optimize iPhone Storage free up iCloud storage?

No. Optimize Storage addresses the space used on your iPhone or iPad: it keeps full-resolution originals in iCloud and uses smaller, space-saving versions on the device as needed. It does not shrink your iCloud Photos library or create more iCloud capacity. To find the option, open Photos settings and look for the iCloud Photos storage choices; the exact labels and path can vary by operating-system version. Apple describes the feature in its iCloud Photos setup guide.

Which option frees space, and where?

Option Where space is freed What happens to the cloud photo library
Remove unneeded backups, files, or attachments iCloud, if the selected content uses iCloud storage Photos remain in the library unless you delete them separately.
Use Optimize Storage iPhone or iPad storage Full-resolution originals remain in iCloud.
Make a separate copy without deleting anything Neither iCloud nor device storage is freed by the copy itself The iCloud library remains unchanged.
Delete items from iCloud Photos iCloud storage after deletion processes Items are removed across devices using iCloud Photos on the same account.
Upgrade to iCloud+ Adds iCloud capacity rather than removing existing content You can retain the cloud library within the added capacity.

When should you consider more iCloud storage?

If you have removed content you no longer need and still want to keep the full cloud library, adding iCloud capacity is an alternative to deleting photos. Apple identifies upgrading to iCloud+ as an option when storage cleanup is not enough. Available tiers and prices vary, so check the options shown for your account and region in Apple’s iCloud storage guidance.

Why it is safer to check storage before deleting

Apple says an account receives 5 GB of free iCloud storage in its current support documentation. When storage is full, new photos may stop uploading, device backups may stop, other iCloud apps may not stay up to date, and iCloud Mail may be affected. Checking the category breakdown first helps you target the content using space without making your photo library the default place to cut.
