To make room for a Nintendo Switch eShop game, open System Settings > Data Management, check which software and captures use the most space, then archive or delete an unused download. Archiving removes the game files but keeps its HOME Menu icon and save data; deleting removes the files and icon but normally leaves save data available for the same user. If internal storage is still insufficient, insert a compatible microSD card before downloading. Nintendo directs downloaded software, updates, downloadable content, screenshots and videos to System Memory or an inserted microSD card, while game save data stays in System Memory.

Check the game’s requirement before deleting anything

Open the game’s listing in the Nintendo eShop and note the stated storage requirement. Nintendo says requirements vary by title and that the listing identifies whether a microSD card may be needed. Physical-game packaging can also list a requirement, but the eShop listing is the relevant reference when you are downloading a digital copy.

Next, compare that number with the free space shown on the console. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings, choose Data Management, and review the storage summary. Do not plan to free only the exact download size: updates and downloadable content can require additional room later. The official sources do not establish one universal game-size figure, so a requirement for one title cannot be used to predict the space needed for another.

Use this safe sequence to free space

  1. Open System Settings. Select the gear icon from the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu.
  2. Choose Data Management. This area shows available space and the categories using System Memory and any inserted microSD card.
  3. Review Manage Software. Select Manage Software and identify a large or unused downloadable title. The list helps you choose a specific game instead of removing files at random.
  4. Archive or delete the title. Choose Archive Software to remove the downloaded files while retaining the software icon on the HOME Menu. Choose Delete Software to remove both the files and the icon. Nintendo also provides Quick Archive when you want to process multiple titles.
  5. Manage screenshots and videos. In Manage Save Data/Screenshots, remove captures you no longer need or move them using the available capture-management options. Videos and screenshots are separate from game save data and can consume a meaningful amount of storage.
  6. Add a microSD card if necessary. Insert a compatible card, let the console prepare it if prompted, and retry the eShop download. Nintendo says software downloads default to an inserted microSD card.
  7. Start the eShop download again. Recheck the free-space figure in Data Management if the download still reports insufficient capacity. A title’s update or DLC requirement may be part of the space needed after installation.

Delete Software Removes the downloaded software files. Removed with the software. Redownload the purchased title from the same Nintendo Account while it remains available. Save data is not impacted when the same user is selected. No additional cost.
Compatible microSD card Adds capacity for software, updates, DLC, screenshots and videos; the amount depends on the card’s usable capacity. Existing icons are unaffected; new downloads default to the inserted card according to Nintendo. Use the added capacity for downloads and redownloads. Verify the card’s compatibility before purchase. Save data remains in System Memory and is not moved to the card. Current price and warranty are not stated in the official sources and vary by product and seller.

What archiving does—and what it does not do

Nintendo describes archiving as deleting downloaded software to free space while preserving the software icon on the HOME Menu. The icon is a convenient redownload entry; it is not a playable copy of the game. You need an internet connection and enough available storage when you select the archived title and download it again.

Archiving is useful when you expect to return to a game but do not need it installed today. It avoids having to search the eShop for the title later and keeps the HOME Menu arrangement familiar. It does not create space by touching your save file: the downloaded program and its save data are separate categories.

Archive games you can redownload reliably. If a title is no longer available for purchase or download, retaining the installed files may be preferable; Nintendo’s statement about redownloading applies while the software remains available and the purchaser uses the same Nintendo Account.

What deleting software does

Delete Software removes the downloaded program and its HOME Menu icon. It is appropriate when you want a cleaner HOME Menu or do not expect to return to the title soon. Deleting the program is not the same as deleting its save data.

  • Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
  • Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.

Nintendo’s FAQ states that, so long as the same user is selected on the console, save data is not impacted whether the software is played from a game card or downloaded from the Nintendo eShop. A purchaser can generally redownload deleted software with the same Nintendo Account while the title remains available. Before deleting, confirm that you know which Nintendo Account purchased the game, particularly on a console with multiple users.

Deleting does not cancel ownership of an eShop purchase. It only removes the local installation. Any future download still needs enough free space in System Memory or on the microSD card selected for software.

Recover space from screenshots and videos

Captures are easy to overlook because they are not listed as game software. Nintendo classifies screenshots and video captures as data that can reside in System Memory or on a microSD card. A large capture library can therefore block a game installation even when the software list does not contain an obvious candidate.

From System Settings > Data Management, open Manage Save Data/Screenshots. Inspect the screenshot and video categories, then remove captures you have already backed up or no longer need. Keep only the files you want on the console; deleting a capture does not uninstall a game.

  • The official licensed microSD card for Nintendo Switch Systems

  • Store an entire game collection, plus screenshots and videos, with up to 64GB of additional memory (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less)

When you want to preserve captures, use the console’s available screenshot-management or transfer options before deleting them. The exact space recovered depends on the number and size of the files, so check the free-space indicator afterward rather than relying on a fixed estimate.

How a microSD card changes Switch storage

A compatible microSD card is Nintendo’s way to expand capacity for eShop software. Nintendo states that downloaded software, software updates, downloadable content, screenshots and videos can be stored in System Memory or on a microSD card. With a card inserted, software downloads default to that card.

The card does not become a location for game saves. Nintendo states that save data is stored in the console’s System Memory and cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. Buying a larger card therefore gives you more room for installations and captures, not a way to relocate save files.

What to verify before buying

  • Compatibility: Confirm that the product is a microSD card supported by your Switch model and current system software. Do not assume that every card with a microSD label is suitable.
  • Capacity: Compare the card’s usable capacity with the size of the games you plan to keep installed. The eShop requirement is title-specific.
  • Sustained performance: Prefer a card intended for repeated game downloads and loading rather than an unknown low-quality product. Performance specifications should be checked on the card’s current listing.
  • Warranty and seller: Verify who fulfills the order, the return policy and the warranty. These details can change and are not fixed by Nintendo’s storage guidance.
  • Price: Check the current price at the time of purchase. The official Nintendo information does not establish a standard price for any capacity.

Insert the card before starting the eShop download. If a card is already present, Data Management lets you see where storage is being used and how much space remains. A card increases available capacity; it does not remove the need to check a game’s stated requirement or leave room for updates and DLC.

Save data safety: the distinction that prevents accidental loss

Downloaded software is the program itself. Save data records progress and is stored separately in System Memory. Nintendo’s guidance means that archiving or deleting the downloaded program does not, by itself, remove the save data when the same user is selected.

This distinction also explains why a microSD card cannot be used as a save-data backup location. Moving or deleting a game’s installation changes where the program is stored; it does not transfer the save file to the card. If several people use the console, select the user who created the progress before launching a redownloaded title.

Do not treat a game’s HOME Menu icon as proof that its complete installation is still present. An archived title can retain its icon even though the playable files have been removed. Conversely, deleting the icon does not mean the purchase or its save data has been erased.

Troubleshoot an installation that still will not start

There is not enough free space after archiving one game

Return to System Settings > Data Management and check the free-space figure. Archive or delete another large title, then review screenshots and videos. Compare the remaining space with the eShop listing again; the title may require more room than expected, or an update and DLC may be downloaded as part of the installation.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

The download is using System Memory instead of the card

Confirm that the microSD card is inserted correctly and recognized in Data Management. Nintendo says downloads default to an inserted microSD card, so an unrecognized or incompatible card can leave System Memory as the available destination. Check the card’s compatibility and condition before repeatedly retrying the download.

You deleted a game and cannot find it on the HOME Menu

That is expected after choosing Delete Software. Open the Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that purchased the title and locate the account’s redownloadable software. A deleted purchase can generally be downloaded again while Nintendo continues to make it available.

You archived a game but it still appears to take space

An archived title keeps its HOME Menu icon, but the downloaded software files are removed. Check the storage totals in Data Management rather than judging by the icon. If space did not increase, inspect other software, updates, DLC, screenshots and videos; one of those categories may be using the remaining capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are worried that progress disappeared

Do not delete save data while reviewing the Data Management menus. Nintendo separates save data from downloaded software and states that archiving or deleting the software does not impact the save data when the same user is selected. Launch the redownloaded title with that user profile.

A practical cleanup plan before a large eShop download

  1. Read the title’s eShop storage requirement and note whether Nintendo indicates a microSD card may be needed.
  2. Check available space in System Settings > Data Management.
  3. Sort your choices by how soon you expect to play them again. Archive games you want to keep easy to redownload; delete games whose icons you no longer want.
  4. Review screenshots and videos before removing another game. Preserve captures elsewhere if they matter to you.
  5. Leave room beyond the listed requirement for updates and downloadable content.
  6. If internal capacity remains short, install a compatible microSD card and confirm that the console recognizes it.
  7. Start the download, then recheck Data Management if the installation pauses or reports a capacity error.

Key takeaways

  • Use System Settings > Data Management as the control center for software and capture storage.
  • Archive to remove game files while keeping the HOME Menu icon; delete to remove both files and icon.
  • Neither action removes save data when the same user is selected, according to Nintendo’s FAQ.
  • Save data remains in System Memory and cannot be moved to a microSD card.
  • A compatible microSD card expands room for eShop software, updates, DLC, screenshots and videos.
  • Check each game’s own eShop requirement and keep headroom for additional downloads.
