A resume that is easy to scan puts your relevant experience, skills, and results where a recruiter can find them without hunting. Use a simple single-column layout, familiar section headings, a clear recent-to-oldest work timeline, readable type, and concise bullets. “Six seconds” is shorthand linked to a historical eye-tracking study—not a universal timer for every recruiter or application.

What “six seconds” does—and does not—mean

The six-second figure is commonly traced to a 2012 TheLadders eye-tracking study of 30 professional recruiters, as recounted by the secondary source Six Second Resume. Treat it as a historical finding about an initial scan, not a guarantee that every recruiter spends six seconds on every resume. The practical lesson is simply to make the document’s most relevant information quick to locate.

Choose a format that makes your experience easy to follow

For most applicants with a conventional work history, use reverse-chronological order: put the most recent position first, then work backward. This makes the employment timeline straightforward to scan. CareerOneStop outlines three common resume formats:

Format What it foregrounds What to consider
Chronological A clear work-history timeline, with recent roles first. Often suits a solid work history in the same field.
Functional Skills and capabilities rather than a role-by-role timeline. May suit a career change or transferable skills, but a limited or missing detailed work history can be misread or rejected by some ATS.
Combination Skills and transferable strengths alongside work history. Can foreground relevant skills while retaining a detailed employment timeline.

These distinctions follow CareerOneStop’s resume format guidance. If you choose a functional or combination format, still make employers, job titles, and dates easy to identify. Use reverse chronology for education entries when it makes your recent, relevant education clearest; New Jersey Career Services explains reverse-chronological ordering.

Use a clean layout that works for people and ATS

ATS (applicant tracking systems) vary, so no layout can guarantee that every system will read every field correctly. A conservative layout reduces avoidable parsing problems and helps a person scan the page:

  • Use one column and conventional headings such as “Work Experience,” “Education,” and “Skills.”
  • Put your name and contact details in the main document body. Some systems may not read essential information placed only in a header or footer.
  • Avoid tables, text boxes, columns, logos, images, and graphics for essential resume content; some systems may misread them.
  • Keep headings, dates, spacing, and bullet styles consistent so the document has a visible hierarchy.

These are precautions, not a claim that every ATS fails on every complex layout. See CareerOneStop’s ATS and formatting recommendations. The University of Southern California also discusses ATS screening in its resume format guidelines.

Make the top of the page specific to the role

Tailor the opening portion of the resume to the job: identify your relevant role or specialty, then make the most pertinent skills and evidence easy to spot. This is a practical application of guidance to emphasize important information and tailor a resume, not the result of a controlled study.

Use concise bullets to explain what you did, in what context, and what changed or was achieved where you can support a result. New Jersey Career Services recommends action verbs, details, and results as a useful bullet-writing formula. Avoid burying relevant evidence in dense paragraphs or a long block of unrelated skills.

Keep type and spacing readable

CareerOneStop recommends common fonts around 10–12 points, consistent spacing, and 1-inch margins; New Jersey Career Services offers similar font and margin guidance. Use restrained emphasis to establish hierarchy, and do not shrink text just to force the resume onto a preferred number of pages.

Should your resume be one page?

Not necessarily. Choose a length that presents relevant experience clearly and fits the norms for your career stage and application. The guidance differs by audience: New Jersey Career Services says one to two pages in most circumstances; USC describes one page as a commonly used student format; UC Santa Barbara notes that two or three pages may be accepted for some experienced candidates.

Those are guidelines, not a universal page limit. Cut irrelevant or repetitive details, but do not remove useful evidence or make the type hard to read solely to hit one page. See New Jersey Career Services, USC Career Center, and UC Santa Barbara Career Services.

Should you send your resume as a PDF?

Follow the employer’s instructions first. If no format is specified, CareerOneStop recommends PDF to preserve the layout. Export the finished resume, open the exported file, and check that the text, dates, bullets, and contact details remain readable before submitting it.

A quick final check before submitting

  • Can a reader quickly find your relevant role or specialty, recent experience, and most useful skills?
  • Are section headings familiar, and is the work timeline easy to follow?
  • Are key details in the document body rather than only in a header or footer?
  • Are the font, spacing, and bullets consistent and readable?
  • Does the exported file match the employer’s requested format and display correctly?
