When Windows 10 refuses to remove a program, the cause may be a damaged uninstall entry, a missing installer, a running process, or a mismatch between the app type and removal method. Start with Windows’ normal uninstall options, then try Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter, WinGet, or Windows Installer for an MSI app. Do not start by deleting the program folder; that can leave the app registered as installed.
Windows 10 note: Windows 10 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025. Version 22H2 was the final general release. LTSC editions have separate support lifecycles, but the uninstall procedures below still apply to supported Windows 10 installations.
Before forcing an uninstall
- Save your work and close the program.
- Exit related launchers, update utilities, and tray icons.
- Restart Windows and try uninstalling again. A pending reboot or locked file can prevent removal.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator actions.
If the program is a security product, VPN, backup client, hardware driver, or business application, check the vendor’s removal instructions first. These programs may install services, drivers, or protection components that a generic file-deletion approach cannot safely remove.
1. Try the correct Windows 10 uninstall paths
Windows 10 has several uninstall interfaces. Use Apps & features in Settings; Installed apps is the newer Windows 11 wording. Some applications are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled through the normal Windows interfaces.

From the Start menu
- Select Start > All apps.
- Find the program, right-click it, and select Uninstall.
- Complete the program’s removal wizard.
If Uninstall is missing or the wizard fails, try Settings or Control Panel.
From Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the program.
- Choose Uninstall, then confirm.
Some desktop programs do not support removal from Settings. Windows may provide a second Uninstall button that opens the Control Panel entry.
From Control Panel
- Search the taskbar for Control Panel and open it.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the program.
- Choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.
Control Panel is useful for older desktop applications and MSI-based software. If the program is not listed or its entry produces an error such as “uninstall log file not found,” continue with the Microsoft troubleshooter.
2. Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is designed for desktop Windows programs whose installation or removal information is damaged. It can address corrupted registry keys, missing or incomplete uninstall data, and programs that cannot be completely uninstalled or updated through Add or Remove Programs or Programs and Features.
It is not a general-purpose file eraser and is not intended for Microsoft Store apps. It repairs installation or uninstall information; it does not guarantee removal of every program or leftover file.
- Download the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter from Microsoft Support.
- When prompted, choose Run or Open.
- Follow the troubleshooter’s prompts and choose Uninstalling when asked.
- Select the program if it appears in the list.
- Complete the repair and removal prompts, then restart Windows if requested.
If the application is not listed, the tool may ask for its product code. This is an MSI product GUID, not necessarily the program’s display name, installation-folder name, or downloaded setup-file name. Microsoft says the product code can be obtained from the MSI file’s Property table, normally with an MSI-reading tool. Use only the code for the intended product; removing the wrong MSI package can affect another installation.
3. Uninstall it with WinGet
WinGet can remove applications shown in the installed-application inventory, including some programs not originally installed with WinGet, if they have a usable uninstall entry. It requires Windows 10 version 1809, build 17763, or later, and the App Installer component.

Check whether WinGet sees the program
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:
Command: winget list
To filter by a program’s name, run:
Command: winget list –name “Program Name”
To require an exact name match, run:
Command: winget list –name “Program Name” –exact
Record the exact name, package ID, and version shown. WinGet queries do not support wildcard syntax. Default matching can return partial matches, and multiple matches require additional filtering.
Uninstall by exact name
Command: winget uninstall –name “Program Name” –exact
If the list shows a package ID, using it can be more precise:
Command: winget uninstall –id Publisher.Program

Useful WinGet options
| Option | Use |
|---|---|
| –silent | Suppresses the uninstaller interface when the package supports it. |
| –interactive | Runs the uninstaller interactively. |
| –force | Directly runs the uninstall command and continues through non-security-related issues. |
| –all | Removes all matching applications. |
| –all-versions | Removes all matching versions where supported. |
Important: –force is not a guaranteed force-delete command. Microsoft documents it as an option for running the registered uninstall command directly and continuing through certain issues. It does not promise to bypass a broken vendor uninstaller or delete every leftover file.

4. Remove an MSI program with Msiexec
Programs installed through Windows Installer can sometimes be removed directly with msiexec.exe. You need the correct MSI product code, a GUID that identifies the product.

Command: msiexec.exe /x {PRODUCT-CODE} /L*V “C:\Temp\uninstall.log”
The log can help show whether the failure involves a missing source MSI, permissions, a custom action, or another Windows Installer problem.
Do not substitute the product’s folder name or a guessed GUID. The product code is not always visible from the program’s name. If you do not know it, use the Control Panel entry, WinGet’s –product-code option when it reports one, or Microsoft’s troubleshooter.
5. Handle Microsoft Store apps differently
The Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is for desktop Windows programs, not Microsoft Store apps. Store applications use the Windows app-package system and may not have a conventional MSI or Control Panel uninstall entry.
For a normal Store app, try:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the app.
- Choose Uninstall.
If the app’s entry is damaged, use Microsoft’s separate Microsoft Store app troubleshooting guidance rather than applying the desktop-program troubleshooter or deleting package folders manually.
6. Special case: Microsoft 365 and Office
Office may be installed as Click-to-Run, MSI, or a Microsoft Store package. The correct removal process depends on the installation type.
Click-to-Run or MSI Office
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office suite.
- Choose Uninstall.
In most cases, an individual Word, Excel, or Outlook component cannot be removed separately when installed as part of a Microsoft 365 or Office suite. Separate removal is generally available only for a standalone application purchase.

- Do not simply delete the installation folder. This removes files without necessarily removing services, registry entries, package metadata, or the registered uninstall command.
- Do not delete random registry keys. Use Microsoft’s troubleshooter or the application’s documented removal tool rather than guessed registry edits.
- Do not use a random product code. An MSI GUID belongs to a specific product.
- Do not treat –force as a file shredder. WinGet still depends on the registered uninstall command.
- Do not use the desktop troubleshooter for a Store app. The two app types use different installation and removal mechanisms.

FAQ
What is the safest way to force uninstall a program in Windows 10?
Use an escalation order: try Settings > Apps > Apps & features, then Control Panel > Programs and Features, then Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. Use WinGet or msiexec only when the program is represented correctly in the installed-app inventory or you have the correct MSI product code.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy does Windows 10 show “Installed apps” in some uninstall guides?
Installed apps is the newer Windows 11 wording. Windows 10 uses Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
Does winget uninstall –force delete a program completely?
No. The –force option runs the registered uninstall command directly and continues through certain non-security-related issues. It is not documented as a way to delete all program files or bypass every broken vendor uninstaller.
Can I delete the program folder if uninstall does not work?
That is not a proper uninstall. Folder deletion can leave registry entries, services, drivers, and uninstall metadata behind. Repair the uninstall entry with Microsoft’s troubleshooter or use the vendor’s removal utility instead.
Can Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter remove Microsoft Store apps?
No. Microsoft limits that troubleshooter to desktop Windows programs. Microsoft Store apps require the separate Store-app troubleshooting and removal path.

How do I uninstall an MSI program from Command Prompt?
Obtain the correct MSI product code, open Command Prompt as administrator, and run msiexec.exe /x {PRODUCT-CODE}. Add /L*V “C:\Temp\uninstall.log” when you need a detailed uninstall log.
The Bottom Line
Use the registered uninstall mechanism rather than trying to erase files: Apps & features, Programs and Features, Microsoft’s desktop-program troubleshooter, WinGet, or msiexec for a known MSI product code. Store apps and Microsoft 365 require different handling. If none of these methods works, identify the installer type and obtain the software vendor’s official removal tool before making manual registry or file changes.
