For an easy Valentine’s Day place setting, fold a square dinner napkin into a heart: narrow it into a strip, raise both sides, then tuck the corners to shape the top. Arrange the finished fold on a dinner plate. Cloth or paper can work, though paper may not hold crisp creases as well.
How to fold a napkin into a heart
Chinet’s heart fold and The Home Depot’s similar method use a straightforward sequence. Start with one square dinner napkin and work on a clean, flat surface.
- Unfold the napkin twice so it lies as a long rectangle.
- Fold it lengthwise into a narrower strip.
- Raise the right side along the center line, then raise the left side to meet it.
- Fold the inner corners down behind the napkin.
- Fold the outer corners down behind it as well, rounding the two lobes at the top of the heart.
- Press the creases firmly to help the shape hold, then place the heart on the dinner plate.
The Home Depot says its cloth-napkin directions can also be used with household paper napkins. Chinet specifies a dinner napkin; paper is a practical alternative, but its ability to keep a crisp shape depends on the napkin.
Choose a fold to suit the place setting

A rolled rose from Linen Chest
Linen Chest’s rose version rolls the napkin diagonally, coils one end, and tucks the other end to secure the form. It suggests adding rose leaves as a finishing detail. This is a separate approach from Bosch’s folded-petal rose.

A folded-petal rose from Bosch
Bosch’s advanced method folds each corner to the center twice, turns the napkin over and repeats, then pulls the folded corners forward to form petals. Bosch says the technique flourishes best with rather stiff material, so it is a more demanding choice than the flat heart.
An envelope for a note
Linen Chest’s envelope fold makes a pocket that can hold a short message. Choose it when adding a personal note matters more than making the napkin itself the central heart-shaped decoration.

Prepare and arrange the napkins
Use a clean, flat work surface and press folds as you go, especially when shaping the heart’s rounded top. Linen Chest suggests ironing or steaming napkins before its Valentine folds; this is optional, not a prerequisite for the basic heart. Hallmark Channel’s beginner place-setting project also forms a heart by folding the napkin lengthwise and tucking the center flaps behind, then placing it on a charger.
