Start with less than a scant teaspoon per mug, brew as usual, then adjust the amount in your next batch to suit your taste. You do not need pumpkin purée for the classic spice flavor.
How to add pumpkin spice to coffee grounds
- Measure your ground coffee as you normally would for the amount of coffee you plan to brew.
- Sprinkle in a small amount of pumpkin pie spice and mix it through the grounds. Peet’s suggests a scant teaspoon per mug or glass as a starting point; use less if you want a subtle flavor or are unsure how strong your blend is.
- Brew with your usual method and settings. A drip-coffee recipe also puts the coffee and spice together in the filter before brewing, but the sources do not establish that one brewer produces better flavor than another.
- Taste the coffee and adjust the spice amount for a later brew. The suggested measure is a recipe starting point, not a tested optimum.
This method adds flavor directly to the grounds without requiring special equipment. A ready-made pumpkin pie spice blend is convenient; individual spices let you adjust the flavor profile.
Make a pumpkin pie spice blend at home
Peet’s blend combines five ground spices. Mix these ingredients thoroughly, breaking up any clumps:
- 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
The recipe makes about 5 1/2 tablespoons. Store the blend in a jar in a cool, dark place, and use it through the earliest expiration date of any spice in the mix. You can also change the proportions to suit your taste; the cited recipe does not establish one blend as best.

Stir spice into a brewed cup instead
For a single serving—or for a drink with actual pumpkin—add spices to brewed coffee in the mug. Sunbeam’s pumpkin-spice latte recipe combines pumpkin purée and spices with the coffee, then adds frothed milk. It lists ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, or pumpkin spice. This is different from flavoring the grounds: purée is an additional ingredient, not part of the spice blend itself.

Using commercially flavored ground coffee
Pre-flavored grounds are an alternative if you do not want to mix spices yourself. Whittard describes its pumpkin-spice ground coffee as limited edition and advises storing it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Check that the coffee’s grind suits your brewer; the product listing does not establish compatibility with every brewing method.
