Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with the exact warning in YouTube Live Control Room. If it says “incorrect video size (resolution)”, make the encoder’s outgoing width and height match the resolution selected in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings. YouTube states that the sent video must match those dimensions. For a 24/7 stream, test any change before applying it to the live broadcast: YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee a seamless mid-stream resolution change.
1. Read the full warning before changing settings
In Live Control Room, read the message beside the Health Indicator and note its timestamp. YouTube health messages identify the reported problem; a continuing error can reappear until it is fixed. Red indicates a critical error, while yellow indicates a moderate problem that may reduce quality. Follow the specific diagnostic rather than changing unrelated encoder settings. YouTube Live Control Room stream health.
2. Match the encoder’s output dimensions to YouTube
For an incorrect video-size warning, compare the resolution selected on YouTube’s Ingestion Settings page with the encoder’s actual output width and height. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says: “Your video must be the height and width of the resolution that you chose on the Ingestion Settings page.” A mismatch can trigger the warning even if the source file itself has a different resolution; what matters here is the video the encoder is sending.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and locate the stream’s Ingestion Settings.
- Record the selected resolution and its width and height.
- Open the encoder’s output or video settings and check the dimensions it is sending—not just the source or playlist resolution.
- Set the encoder output to the selected dimensions, or choose a different resolution in YouTube and make the encoder match it.
- Start a test and check the preview and Health Indicator for the same warning.
If YouTube reports the resolution as unsupported or non-optimal, still begin by checking the dimension match. Do not assume that changing the stream key is necessary: a resolution mismatch alone does not establish a key problem.

3. Choose automatic detection or a manually selected resolution
YouTube supplies the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the incoming encoder feed and transcodes the stream into multiple output formats for viewers. Its default recommendation is automatic resolution and frame-rate detection. YouTube Help states: “By default (recommended), YouTube will automatically detect your resolution and frame rate.” If you need a fixed selection, YouTube allows manual settings through a custom stream key.
| Configuration | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic detection | You want YouTube’s recommended default to detect resolution and frame rate. | Confirm that the encoder sends a stable, supported output and check Live Control Room after a source or encoder change. |
| Manual resolution | You need a deliberately selected resolution. | Use a custom stream key with manual settings enabled under Stream Resolution, then ensure the encoder keeps sending the configured dimensions when its source changes. |
The stream key is the credential and address the encoder uses to send a feed for YouTube to accept. A custom key can be reused. Do not reset a working key just to address a dimension warning; reset or replace it only if there is a stream-key problem.

4. Check bitrate and available upload capacity
A correct resolution can still be difficult to sustain if the encoder bitrate exceeds available upload capacity. YouTube advises considering a lower selected resolution when there is not enough bandwidth for the current choice. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate you use; those recommendations are configuration-specific and can change.
- Check the encoder’s configured bitrate alongside its resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Measure and plan around upload capacity, not download speed.
- YouTube’s network tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Include the capacity needed by both primary and backup feeds where applicable.
- If the connection cannot sustain the chosen configuration, lower the selected resolution and set the encoder to send the matching dimensions.
YouTube’s general encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. These are general settings, not a guarantee that every codec is available for every stream configuration. Use the current page for the applicable bitrate values rather than relying on an older table.

5. Make primary and backup feeds agree
If you have encoder failover configured, compare the primary and backup feeds rather than assuming the backup will take over correctly. YouTube lists these settings for comparison between them:
- Resolution
- Codec
- Interlacing
- Profile
- Bitrate
- Frame rate
- Audio settings
Test failover before relying on it during a continuous broadcast. A backup feed with different dimensions or other mismatched settings may not behave as intended. See YouTube’s encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance.

6. Treat an in-progress resolution change cautiously
YouTube’s published guidance does not provide a guaranteed no-interruption procedure for changing resolution during an already-running 24/7 broadcast. As an operational precaution—not a promise about every encoder—keep the outgoing dimensions consistent during a live session, test a planned change in advance, and schedule a suitable transition if your encoder cannot safely change output dimensions in place. The actual behavior depends on the encoder and stream configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Test the complete configuration before relying on it
YouTube recommends testing before going live, using representative audio and video movement, monitoring stream health and messages, and checking the preview. For encoder workflows, test backup failover and confirm the stream is accessible. A static or unusually simple test may not reveal a problem that appears when the actual source changes resolution.

8. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Incorrect video size (resolution)” | The encoder’s sent width and height do not match the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings. | Align the dimensions on both sides, then test and monitor the Health Indicator. |
| The warning returns after a source or playlist change | The encoder may be sending different dimensions from the ones configured in YouTube, especially with a manual resolution selection. | Check actual encoder output after the source changes; use automatic detection or keep the output dimensions consistent with the manual selection. |
| Health problems continue with matching dimensions | Available upload bandwidth may be insufficient for the configured bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. | Check the current YouTube guidance for the codec and configuration, leave upload headroom, and consider lowering the selected resolution and matching the encoder output. |
| Primary works but backup does not take over cleanly | The feeds may differ in one or more required settings. | Compare resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings; test failover. |
| A new setting appears correct, but continuity is uncertain | The behavior of a live resolution change depends on the encoder and configuration; YouTube does not document a guaranteed seamless procedure. | Validate the change in a test and schedule a transition if the encoder cannot change dimensions safely in place. |
