If YouTube warns about stream health while OBS shows dropped frames, start with the connection and the bitrate—not OBS encoding settings. Check the warning and its timestamp in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare them with OBS’s dropped-frame counter. Work through bitrate, OBS network options, local network and software causes, and YouTube ingest settings in that order. Treat “encoding overloaded” as a separate performance problem.

First, identify which signal is failing

In YouTube Live Control Room, note the warning text and timestamp. Then check OBS’s connection status and whether its dropped-frame counter is increasing. OBS uses “dropped frames” for a client that cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote server or sustain the configured bitrate; enough drops can disconnect the stream. OBS says it is “extremely unlikely” that OBS Studio itself causes dropped frames. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide distinguishes connection drops from rendering or encoding lag.

  • OBS dropped frames or intermittent disconnects: investigate the outbound connection, bitrate, VPN, network software, and route to YouTube.
  • “Encoding overloaded” in OBS, without a rising network-drop counter: investigate rendering or encoding performance instead.
  • A YouTube warning without matching OBS drops: use the warning’s specific wording to check the relevant ingest setting; do not assume every health warning means packet loss.

Check whether the warning and OBS symptom began at the same time, and whether the problem recurs on every stream or only one. YouTube classifies red warnings as critical and yellow warnings as moderate. Its live streaming error messages explain what each warning indicates.

Lower the bitrate to match stable upload capacity

In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. Use the upload capacity your connection can sustain consistently, not its best result in a single speed test. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a general starting heuristic—not a guarantee or a YouTube requirement. If drops continue, lower the bitrate again or choose a lower resolution. YouTube says to follow the recommended bitrate for the selected resolution when not using a variable-resolution entry point.

YouTube’s current encoder-settings table gives these recommended H.264 video bitrates:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 values, not minimum upload speeds or universal settings. The official encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table also lists separate values for AV1 and H.265 and may change. Check it for the codec and resolution you actually use. If your stable connection cannot support the selected output, reduce the output resolution rather than forcing a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.

  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

Try OBS’s Windows network options

  1. In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced → Network.
  2. Try enabling Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. OBS describes these Windows-only options as potentially helpful for some users; they also add troubleshooting detail to OBS logs.
  3. Confirm Bind to IP is set to Default.
  4. As a diagnostic, change IP Family to IPv4 Only and test. If it does not improve the connection, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.

Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta) can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. Treat it as a fallback, not a root-cause fix: OBS notes that it lowers video quality and does not resolve the underlying connection fault. The current OBS connection guide describes these options and their trade-offs.

Isolate local network and software causes

Change one factor at a time and compare OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s health messages during a test stream. That makes it easier to tell which change helped.

  • [Widely Compatible]The usb c ethernet adapter for iMac, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, XPS and many other devices. Compatible with Windows 11/10/8.1/8, Mac OS, iPad OS, Chrome OS.(Note: Driver is required on Win 7) It can be used in office, school, library and other occasions, compact and portable, easy to carry around.
  • Wi-Fi: if possible, test with a wired Ethernet connection to the router. An Ethernet cable is an optional way to make this comparison; it cannot fix ISP route congestion, a bitrate mismatch, VPN interference, or encoding overload.
  • VPN: test with the VPN disconnected. OBS notes that a VPN can make the stream connection unstable.
  • Security software: temporarily disable it only long enough to test. If the test identifies interference, restore protection and add an OBS exception rather than leaving security disabled.
  • Network-priority utilities: check traffic-priority or “optimization” tools. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples that may deprioritize OBS. Follow OBS’s current directions for the utility; do not indiscriminately uninstall software.
  • Network drivers: install current drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  • Modem, router, and other links: restart the modem and router. Cables, routers, modems, network cards, switches, and extenders can also be faulty; if you are unsure what to replace, consult your ISP first.

If the drops persist after local tests, contact your ISP. Provide the times of the drops, OBS logs, whether you were on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the steps already tried. Route congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control. OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers these possible causes; YouTube also has a live-stream troubleshooting page.

Match OBS’s output to YouTube’s ingest requirements

Use the actual Live Control Room warning to decide what to check. YouTube’s error guidance says format warnings can involve the codec or container; bitrate warnings depend on the selected resolution; and video warnings can involve stream count, interlacing, frame rate, keyframe frequency, or resolution. Avoid changing unrelated settings when the warning points to a specific mismatch.

Only take the performance path when OBS points to it

If OBS reports “encoding overloaded” or the output is choppy but network drops are not increasing, the likely issue is that a GPU or other system bottleneck is preventing OBS from rendering or encoding fast enough. These steps address performance, not internet packet loss:
