Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf YouTube Live rejects an FFmpeg stream with an unsupported codec, first read the exact error in Live Control Room. For a straightforward RTMP/RTMPS fix, re-encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC, then verify the container, profile, bitrate, keyframe interval, stream URL, and key. Don’t assume that changing a file extension or container also changes its codecs.
Read the exact YouTube Live error first
Live Control Room checks the incoming stream and displays errors near the stream-health indicator. YouTube separates incorrect stream format, unsupported audio codec, wrong video codec, wrong video profile, and container-format problems; the wording determines what to change. An “incorrect stream format” warning can refer to more than the video codec, so check audio, video, profile, and container rather than changing settings at random. YouTube’s live-stream error messages describe these distinctions.
- Unsupported audio codec: inspect the outgoing audio codec.
- Wrong video codec: inspect the outgoing video codec.
- Wrong profile or container: changing the codec alone may not address the reported issue.
- Connection or key error: check the endpoint, stream key, encoder support, and outbound connection separately.
Set a compatible FFmpeg baseline for RTMP or RTMPS
When the error is codec-related, use H.264 video and AAC audio as the conservative troubleshooting baseline. YouTube’s error-specific guidance identifies those settings for proper ingestion; it also names MP3 as an allowed audio codec in its audio-codec error guidance. The general RTMP/RTMPS encoder-settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. These lists do not mean every codec works with every protocol, stream configuration, or error condition. Follow the specific warning and the settings for your selected ingest method. YouTube’s error guidance and encoder settings and bitrate guidance provide the relevant recommendations.
In FFmpeg, selecting stream copy (for example, -c:v copy or -c:a copy) passes through the source stream rather than re-encoding it. If that source uses the rejected codec, copying it will preserve the problem. Re-encode the affected component with an encoder available in your local FFmpeg build; the exact encoder name, options, and supported syntax vary by build and platform. YouTube’s help pages specify ingest targets, not a universal FFmpeg command, so verify your installation’s encoder options and inspect the resulting stream before relying on it.

Check the rest of the RTMP/RTMPS output settings
Once the codecs match the intended ingest path, align the remaining output settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. The figures below are requirements or recommendations from YouTube’s help page; use its bitrate table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- Bitrate mode: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: the RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Video bitrate: choose the value from YouTube’s table that corresponds to your resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its guidance recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. AAC is the baseline to try for an unsupported-audio warning.
See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the bitrate table and the full settings guidance. For 5.1 surround sound, YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies AAC.

When to use HLS instead of changing the codec
If you need to retain a codec that is not supported by your selected RTMP path, HLS may be an alternative, provided your encoder supports YouTube HLS and the stream meets its delivery requirements. YouTube’s HLS guidance lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS is not simply an RTMP URL swap: it requires TS segments, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. You must select HLS in Live Control Room and use the corresponding settings and URL.
YouTube warns that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Choose it only if the codec and encoder support make it appropriate and the extra latency is acceptable. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Verify the stream URL, key, and connection
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and go to the stream settings.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key into the FFmpeg output configuration. For RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL shown in stream settings rather than assuming an older endpoint is still correct.
- Confirm the encoder supports the protocol you selected, especially if changing from RTMP to RTMPS or HLS.
- Restart FFmpeg and watch the stream-health indicator. If the codec warning has cleared but the stream still does not connect or remain healthy, check FFmpeg’s output, the selected URL and key, and the outbound internet connection.
YouTube’s guides cover general live-stream troubleshooting, RTMPS setup, and stream settings and stream-key management.
Test before relying on the stream
Start a test stream before the event or broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live; include audio and movement similar to the intended content, then check Live Control Room’s preview and health messages after restarting FFmpeg with the revised settings. Confirm that audio and video are present and that the specific codec warning has disappeared. A healthy preview is more useful than assuming a successful FFmpeg connection means YouTube has accepted every stream component.

Troubleshooting if the codec error remains
- The error persists after changing the container: a container change does not re-encode audio or video. Check whether FFmpeg is still using stream copy and re-encode the incompatible stream component.
- YouTube reports unsupported audio: inspect the actual outgoing audio codec and try AAC. YouTube’s error guidance also lists MP3, but AAC is the clearest baseline for this troubleshooting path.
- YouTube reports the wrong video codec: use H.264 for the error-specific baseline, even though YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS settings list additional codecs. Confirm the selected ingest protocol and warning before choosing another codec.
- The codec warning clears but connection fails: check the current URL and key, RTMPS support in the encoder, and outbound connectivity.
- The stream connects but health is poor: inspect the bitrate for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec, and verify CBR and the keyframe interval against YouTube’s settings.
- You are considering HLS: first confirm encoder support and compliance with the segment, playlist, HTTPS, and byte-range requirements; also account for HLS’s higher latency.
