If OBS says “Encoding overloaded,” reduce the work OBS has to do: free up computer resources, simplify the active scene, then lower the output resolution and—if needed—the frame rate. Check OBS’s encoding and rendering indicators separately from YouTube’s stream-health and network warnings. A lower YouTube bitrate by itself does not fix a local encoding overload.
What “encoding overloaded” means—and what it does not
The OBS warning means OBS is not keeping up with the work required by its configured output. GPU use, competition for CPU or GPU resources, complex scenes, filters, resolution, and frame rate can all contribute; the warning alone does not identify which one is responsible on your computer. See the OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting guide.
Keep three signals distinct while diagnosing:
- OBS encoding-skipped frames: the encoding work is not keeping up.
- OBS rendering lag or stalls: OBS is struggling to render the scene, which can involve GPU load.
- YouTube stream-health or network warnings: the stream may not be reaching YouTube reliably, for example because upload bandwidth is insufficient. YouTube treats available upload bandwidth as a separate concern (YouTube live-streaming guidance).
Lowering bitrate can help make a stream fit the available internet connection, but it does not necessarily reduce the local work causing OBS’s encoding warning. Diagnose the signal that is actually failing before changing settings or buying hardware.
Fix the problem in a test stream, one change at a time
Before changing your scheduled meditation broadcast, reproduce it in a test stream or private/unlisted rehearsal. Include the actual audio, scene transitions, and representative motion. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the event and monitoring stream health (YouTube live-streaming guidance).

Record the current symptoms
Note whether OBS reports encoding-skipped frames, rendering lag, or both, and record any YouTube stream-health message. Change one setting at a time and observe whether that specific signal improves.
-
Free resources and simplify the scene
Close GPU-heavy applications you recognize and are not using. In OBS, simplify the active scene; temporarily disable filters and reduce costly browser or media sources to see whether performance improves. Re-enable items individually after testing so you can identify a source of extra load. Do not close unfamiliar system processes.
-
On Windows, try running OBS as administrator
OBS lists this as a quick fix that can resolve some GPU-overload cases. It is a Windows-specific possibility, not a guaranteed or universal solution. Retest the same scene afterward.

Lower output resolution before changing the canvas
Open OBS Settings → Video and lower Output (Scaled) Resolution. For example, test 1280×720 output if you are currently trying to stream at 1920×1080. OBS says lowering output resolution reduces the GPU resources needed and encoder load (OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting guide).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Leave Base (Canvas) Resolution alone at first. Changing it can require resizing or repositioning sources; OBS recommends doing so only when resources are especially constrained.
-
Lower frame rate if overload remains
If you are outputting at 60 fps, test 30 fps in OBS Settings → Video → Common FPS Values. Frame rate affects rendering and encoding performance. Because a meditation scene often has little motion, 30 fps is a reasonable practical test, not a meditation-specific setting prescribed by YouTube or OBS. Compare the result in a representative rehearsal.

Set the stream encoder to match YouTube’s live guidance
Use YouTube’s current live-ingestion guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying settings from its separate video-upload recommendations. YouTube’s live guide lists RTMP or RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; recommends RTMPS; specifies CBR; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its listed audio guidance includes AAC or MP3, stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz (YouTube live-streaming guidance).
For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, 6 Mbps for 720p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p60. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 10, 12, 6, and 6 Mbps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations—not a guarantee that your computer can encode at those settings or that your connection can sustain them. Check YouTube’s live table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate because recommendations can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check upload capacity separately
If OBS is keeping up but YouTube reports connection trouble, test your internet upload speed and investigate the network path. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom (YouTube live-streaming guidance). If you send both primary and backup streams, include both bitrates when considering the total. Reducing output resolution may reduce the required bitrate, but choose a setting YouTube recommends for your codec and output.

Retest before the event
Run the full planned scene and audio in a rehearsal after each meaningful change. If the alert persists, consult the OBS log and note your operating system, OBS version, encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Those details help distinguish a CPU-encoding limit from GPU rendering trouble or a constraint in a hardware encoder.
Choosing a practical meditation-stream output
There is no single OBS preset that fixes overload on every computer. Choose an output that the machine can render and encode reliably, looks adequate for the scene, matches YouTube’s guidance, and fits the upload connection with headroom. Lower resolution and frame rate reduce workload, but also change image detail and motion smoothness.
| Test output | Local workload trade-off | YouTube recommended bitrate | When to test it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | Higher resolution and frame rate can demand more rendering and encoding work. | H.264: 17 Mbps; AV1/H.265: 12 Mbps | Keep it only if OBS and the upload connection handle it reliably. |
| 1080p30 | Lower frame rate than 1080p60; retains 1080p output resolution. | H.264: 10 Mbps; AV1/H.265: 10 Mbps | Try when 60 fps appears unnecessary or unstable. |
| 720p60 | Lower resolution than 1080p; retains 60 fps motion. | H.264: 8 Mbps; AV1/H.265: 6 Mbps | Consider when motion smoothness matters but 1080p is too demanding. |
| 720p30 | Lower resolution and frame rate than 1080p60. | H.264: 6 Mbps; AV1/H.265: 6 Mbps | A reasonable test for a mostly still meditation scene on a constrained system. |
The bitrate values are YouTube live-ingestion recommendations; they do not predict OBS performance. Use the row for your actual codec and output, then verify with a rehearsal.

When a different encoder or hardware might help
Do not buy a new computer, graphics card, cooling accessory, or standalone encoder based only on the warning. First identify whether OBS is encoding-skipping, rendering-lagging, or whether YouTube is reporting a network issue. OBS notes that supported hardware encoders can move work from the CPU to a specialized component, but availability and support depend on your operating system and hardware; requirements also vary with resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS advanced recording settings guide; OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting guide). A hardware encoder is a possible remedy only after the logs and setup point to an encoding bottleneck it can address.
Common symptoms and what to check
- OBS says encoding overloaded, while YouTube health is good: reduce OBS workload, starting with scene complexity and output resolution; then test a lower frame rate.
- OBS rendering lag rises: simplify the scene, disable filters temporarily, and reduce output resolution. On Windows, test running OBS as administrator.
- OBS indicators look clean, but YouTube reports connection issues: check upload capacity and headroom, then investigate the network rather than assuming the encoder is at fault.
- The stream works until a browser source or filter is enabled: test that item alone, then simplify or remove it if the load returns.
- The warning continues after basic changes: gather the OBS log, system and OBS versions, encoder type, output settings, skipped-encoding and rendering-lag counts, and YouTube’s stream-health messages before choosing a hardware or encoder change.
