First find out what actually stopped: the YouTube live event, the encoder’s connection to YouTube, or just the playlist playback. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health alongside the encoder preview and logs. If the encoder is still connected while a video stops or starts over, fix the playlist source; if YouTube reports an ingest error or the event ends, troubleshoot the encoder, connection, stream key, or channel restrictions instead.
Identify which part of the stream is failing
At the next interruption, note the time and check both Live Control Room and your encoder. YouTube’s stream-health status can reveal an ingest problem, while the encoder’s preview and logs show whether it is still producing video and audio. If several viewers report the same outage at once, investigate the encoder and its connection rather than assuming each viewer has a local playback issue.
- The media stops or restarts, but the encoder remains connected: inspect the playlist source and its looping or visibility settings.
- The encoder reports an error, freezes, or its preview is bad: inspect encoder software, system load, media playback, and output settings.
- The encoder preview looks healthy, but YouTube reports stream-health or ingestion trouble: test the outbound connection and verify the stream configuration.
- Live Control Room or Studio shows a copyright notice or restriction: address the rights or account issue; changing bitrate or cables will not resolve it.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder output and internet quality. A healthy local preview does not rule out a problem on the way to YouTube.
Fix playlist playback in OBS
For local files in OBS Studio, use the source that matches what you are playing. OBS’s documented controls differ for a single video and a multi-file playlist. The OBS Media Sources guide (dated January 11, 2022) notes that VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear.

- Open the active scene. In OBS, confirm the intended source is present in the scene currently being sent to YouTube and is visible.
- Verify the files. In the VLC Video source’s properties, check that the expected files are listed in the intended order and can be played. If the VLC Video source is unavailable, install VLC and reopen OBS.
- Set the correct loop control. For multiple files, enable Loop Playlist. For one file in a Media Source, enable Loop.
- Check visibility behavior. Review whether hiding the source stops or restarts playback; avoid changing scenes or toggling visibility in a way that interrupts the source.
- Test the transition. Play representative files and watch what happens at the end of a file and at the end of the full list before relying on a long broadcast.
A loop only controls media playback. It does not reconnect a failed encoder, restore an internet connection, or prevent YouTube from ending an event.
Check the encoder and outbound connection
If the source is playing but the stream still drops, check the encoder and the path from your computer to YouTube. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points streamers to encoder output and outbound internet quality. Its encoder settings recommendations advise testing before a broadcast, choosing a quality your connection can sustain, and monitoring stream health while live.

- Update the encoder to its current release, then inspect its error messages and CPU load during playback.
- Check that audio and video are routed correctly. If the output looks or sounds wrong, review a local recording if one is available; it can help distinguish a source or encoder fault from a delivery problem.
- Compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for that configuration in its encoder settings guide.
- Test upload quality and monitor stream-health messages. Do not raise the bitrate reflexively: a rate your connection cannot sustain can make delivery less reliable.
- If practical, compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet at the same encoder settings. Treat this as a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix; a cable cannot correct a playlist setting, encoder crash, bad key, or copyright interruption.

Verify the YouTube stream URL and key
If the encoder cannot start or reports an authentication or key error, open Live Control Room and verify the server URL and stream key. Copy the current key from YouTube into the encoder. YouTube documents resetting a key in its live stream settings guide; after a reset, update the encoder with the new key. Keep the key private.

Resetting a key is a configuration recovery step, not a fix for a playlist that simply reached its final item. If the stream is already connected and only playback ended, return to the source’s loop settings.
Check copyright notices and live-stream restrictions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including other live broadcasts. According to its copyright guidance for live streams, a detected match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder; if the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Review Live Control Room and YouTube Studio for copyright warnings, matches, strikes, or restrictions.

Review the rights for every item in the playlist. Even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve the notice with the rights holder or YouTube; do not try to evade a restriction by moving the stream to another channel.

The OBS steps above apply to local files in an OBS VLC Video source or Media Source. A YouTube-hosted playlist, a playlist from another service, or a playlist in another encoder has different playback controls. In those cases, first check that service or encoder’s own playback status and documentation, then compare it with YouTube’s stream-health status to determine whether playback or ingest is failing.
