If YouTube Live buffers on mobile data but plays smoothly on Wi-Fi, the problem may be the cellular connection, local congestion, or the route to YouTube—not necessarily your phone or a particular carrier. Start by testing the same stream on both connections, then lower playback quality and clear the YouTube app cache if buffering continues.
Work out whether the issue follows mobile data
- Keep the test consistent. Use the same phone and YouTube live stream. Watch on mobile data, then switch to Wi-Fi if available. Note the location, time, and playback quality.
- Compare the result. If the stream buffers only on mobile data, that points toward the cellular connection or its conditions at that place and time. It does not identify a carrier as the cause or show that your phone needs an upgrade. If it buffers on both connections, continue with the player checks below.
- Try another live stream. If other live streams play normally on the same connection, record which channel or stream buffers and when. This comparison can help describe the issue, but does not prove the broadcaster is at fault.
YouTube recommends trying a different internet connection when videos buffer or fail to load. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
Try the viewer-side fixes
Lower playback quality
While the live stream is playing, open the player’s settings, choose Quality, and select a lower available resolution. This reduces the data the player needs to receive steadily, but the picture will be less detailed. YouTube’s menu labels can vary by device and app version.
Clear the YouTube app cache
Close YouTube, clear its app cache in your device’s app settings, and reopen the app. The exact menu path varies across Android versions and devices. YouTube includes clearing the app cache among its buffering and loading troubleshooting steps.

Repeat the connection comparison
After changing a setting, replay the same stream if it is still live, or compare another live stream under the same conditions. Change one thing at a time where practical so you can tell which change affected playback.
Check the mobile connection where buffering happens
TRAI’s MySpeed provides network measurement tools, including a speed test, Video Test, and Browser Test. Run them at the location and time where you notice the problem, and repeat them rather than relying on one result.

A peak download-speed number alone does not describe every factor affecting live playback. A TRAI-supervised Bengaluru drive-test report describes measurements including download and upload throughput, latency, jitter, packet-drop rate, and video-streaming delay. Those reported categories are not a nationwide statistic about YouTube Live buffering.
There is no basis here to rank Indian mobile operators for this problem. Performance can vary by place and time, so compare the connections available to you rather than assuming a carrier name predicts the result.

Understand the live-stream latency trade-off
Some live streams are configured for lower latency so viewers can interact with less delay. The trade-off is a smaller read-ahead buffer in the player. YouTube explains: “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have.” YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance describes Normal latency as the recommended option for non-interactive broadcasts and as providing the lowest viewer buffering. Low and Ultra-low latency reduce delay for interaction; Ultra-low may increase buffering.
Viewers cannot change the creator’s stream-latency setting. If you are the creator and use a controllable encoder stream, switching to Normal latency may give viewers on variable mobile connections more buffer, at the cost of a longer conversation delay. Webcam and mobile streams are always set up for interactivity, so the creator may not have the same latency control.

When and how to report the problem
If you can reproduce the buffering, keep a short record of the stream, time, location, connection type, playback quality, and repeated MySpeed results. Send feedback through YouTube’s Help and Feedback option after the issue, or contact your mobile operator if the problem repeatedly follows that connection at that location. Specific time-and-place observations are more useful than a general claim that one network always buffers.
