Start by identifying whether the problem is a slow or failing connection from your Hetzner server to YouTube, or delay from capture to viewer playback. They are different problems and need different fixes. Check YouTube Live Control Room health messages alongside encoder logs, measure outbound capacity from the Hetzner host, and test the route to the exact ingest hostname YouTube assigned. Don’t move servers or buy hardware until those checks point to a cause.
First, identify what “ingest latency” means
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between capture by the encoder or camera and the stream appearing to viewers. That is not the same as a delay connecting to YouTube, dropped frames, or a weak stream-health indicator. If the video reaches viewers late but the incoming feed is healthy, investigate playback latency settings. If the encoder struggles to connect or YouTube reports an unhealthy feed, focus on the encoder and server-to-ingest connection. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains stream latency.
- Connection delay or timeout: the encoder cannot establish or maintain its connection to YouTube.
- Unhealthy incoming feed: YouTube or the encoder reports dropped frames, format problems, or other ingest errors.
- Viewer playback delay: viewers see the stream later than the capture time, even if ingest is working.
Read YouTube’s health messages and your encoder logs
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and note the exact health warning text and timestamps. YouTube’s live streaming error messages can identify problems such as an incorrect format or keyframe frequency. Compare each warning time with the encoder’s connection and dropped-frame logs, as well as CPU load. A CPU spike or encoder error at the same time points away from a route problem; repeated network errors without an encoder overload make the connection worth investigating.
Keep a short incident record: time and time zone, exact warning, encoder log excerpt, and whether the stream recovered on its own. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking stream health and the outbound connection.

Check outbound upload capacity from the Hetzner host
Measure upload from the actual server sending the stream, during representative load. A speed test from your home or office in India measures that connection, not the Hetzner server’s outbound capacity. Also, download speed does not establish upload capacity.
Calculate the total outgoing bitrate, including primary and backup streams, and leave headroom. YouTube recommends capacity of primary plus backup bitrate, with an additional 20% recommended. If the measured upload is close to or below that total, reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolve the capacity constraint before treating a route trace as the main explanation. Validate the encoder and ingest settings
Use a protocol and codec combination supported for your workflow, and copy the ingest URL and stream key from the correct YouTube Live Control Room stream. Do not publish or send anyone your stream key: it grants access to your stream.
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Choose bitrate for the resolution and frame rate rather than raising it to compensate for a poor route. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS options including H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with qualifications by codec and workflow; consult its encoder settings table for the specific combination and bitrate range you use.

If RTMPS times out
Confirm that you copied the exact RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room, that it begins with the rtmps protocol, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance describes port 443 for applicable SSL connection issues. A wrong URL, unsupported protocol, or blocked connection can resemble a slow route, so verify these before changing server location.
Trace the route from the server to YouTube’s ingest hostname
Run repeated latency and route checks from the Hetzner host to the exact ingest hostname assigned in Live Control Room, including during the reported problem. Keep raw output and timestamps. Compare measurements taken at similar times and under similar load; routes can vary by source, destination, and time.

Hetzner documents MTR for bandwidth and latency investigations and traceroute for examining server paths. These are diagnostic methods, not a report of the end-to-end route from your specific server to your specific YouTube endpoint. A single traceroute, or a high-latency intermediate hop that does not persist to the destination, does not by itself prove where the bottleneck is.
If possible, compare with a controlled test from another host or network using the same ingest hostname, encoder settings, and test period. If repeatable evidence points to impairment on the Hetzner side, share timestamped measurements with Hetzner. If route and capacity checks look normal but YouTube still reports ingest errors, provide the logs and warnings to YouTube support. YouTube also advises contacting the internet service provider when its outbound connection test finds a problem.

Change server location only after measuring
Hetzner publishes information about its data centers and connections, and its documentation lists Singapore among Cloud locations. Those facility and peering details do not establish which location will have a better route to your assigned YouTube ingest endpoint from your particular server. There is no substantiated universal “best” Hetzner location for this stream.
If you test another location, make it a controlled comparison: use the same ingest hostname, encoder settings, bitrate, and test duration, and compare repeated results from similar time windows. Move only if the measurements show a meaningful, repeatable improvement.
Keep viewer playback latency separate from ingest troubleshooting
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS; it does not, by itself, fix a slow or unstable route. YouTube’s HLS workflow sends video in segments, which adds latency compared with continuous RTMP. YouTube specifies segment durations of one to four seconds for HLS; shorter segments reduce latency within that mode, but HLS is not a general remedy for an impaired server-to-ingest path. It serves supported workflows such as HDR or codecs unavailable through RTMP. YouTube also cautions that lower playback latency can mean more buffering. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
