First find out whether the YouTube video is actually playing through the VPS. If it is, compare the same video at the same quality over that route and an independent connection during peak hours; if it is not, the VPS is not causing the buffering. Then check sustained throughput, latency, packet loss, and competing network use before changing providers or server settings.
Why does YouTube buffer during peak hours?
Buffering means the playback device is not receiving video data steadily enough for the selected quality. Peak-hour congestion can affect the viewer’s local network, the route through a VPS, or another part of the path between the playback device and YouTube’s serving infrastructure. A shared VPS is a plausible cause only if the playback traffic passes through it.
This is a playback problem, not an encoder-upload problem. Advice about how much upload bandwidth a creator needs to broadcast a live stream does not diagnose a viewer’s buffering.
Step 1: Confirm whether YouTube traffic uses the VPS
Determine which of these situations describes your setup before troubleshooting the server:

- You watch YouTube in a remote desktop session on the VPS. The VPS receives the video, decodes it, and sends the remote desktop display to your local device. The VPS’s available resources and network path can affect what you see.
- You watch locally through a proxy or VPN hosted on the VPS. The video traffic is routed through that server, so its shared network capacity and route may matter.
- You watch locally without a VPS-based proxy or VPN. In that case, the VPS is not in the playback path. Check your device, home or mobile connection, and any other network equipment instead.
Do not migrate or retune a VPS until this route check shows that playback uses it.
Step 2: Compare peak and off-peak playback
Use the same YouTube video, playback device, route, and resolution for each comparison. Record the time, whether playback paused, the selected and actual resolution, and any available readings for sustained throughput, round-trip time, or packet loss. Compare a busy period with a quieter one; a single speed-test result taken at another time can miss the conditions that trigger the problem.

Then repeat the comparison over an independent connection, such as a separate fixed-line or mobile network. If you can, keep the playback device and video unchanged while switching only the network path. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another connection and notes that multiple devices sharing a network can reduce the speed available to one device. Step 3: Check whether the selected video quality exceeds available throughput
YouTube lists these approximate sustained playback-speed recommendations. They are guidance, not guarantees: congestion, packet loss, or changing throughput can still cause buffering even when a short speed test appears sufficient. The figures are from YouTube Help.

Temporarily lower the video quality and observe whether playback stabilizes. If it does, the connection may not be delivering enough steady throughput for the higher setting at that time. If it continues to pause even at a lower quality, investigate packet loss, latency variation, client problems, and the route rather than treating headline bandwidth as the only possible cause.
Step 4: Rule out the playback device and competing network use
- Close or pause downloads, backups, and other video streams; check whether other devices are using the same connection heavily.
- Restart or update the browser or YouTube app, then test the same video again.
- Try another supported device or browser. If the problem occurs only in one browser, disable extensions temporarily to check whether one is interfering.
- If using an app, clear its cache where that option is available.
- If you use a remote desktop, distinguish buffering in the YouTube video from lag or freezing in the remote desktop connection itself.

Step 5: Ask the VPS host to investigate only if the fault follows that route
If peak-hour playback repeatedly fails through the VPS but works over the independent path at the same time, send the host a concise record of what you measured. Include timestamps and time zone, whether playback ran inside a remote desktop or through a proxy/VPN, the video behavior, selected quality, sustained throughput, latency and packet-loss observations, and the comparison results. Ask whether peak-hour shared-resource contention or a routing issue is affecting the server.
Consider a different VPS provider only after isolating the VPS route as the likely source. Compare measured performance during the hours that matter to you, including throughput, latency, packet loss, and the provider’s response to the evidence. A server’s India location label by itself does not establish that its shared route will perform well to YouTube for your connection.

What YouTube’s India network research does—and does not—show
A Google-hosted technical report by Monia Ghobadi, Yuchung Cheng, Ankur Jain, and Matt Mathis, Trickle: Rate Limiting YouTube Video Streaming, describes a server-side mechanism evaluated using YouTube production data-center traffic in Europe and India. The report gives experimental results of up to a 43% reduction in average TCP loss rate and up to a 28% reduction in average round-trip time for that mechanism. Those results are not a diagnosis of an individual shared VPS, a prediction for its performance, or a tuning recipe available to its customer; the report’s publication year is not established by the cited material.
