If an Xbox game is stuck downloading or shows Installation stopped, start with the queue: open My games & apps > Manage > Queue, pause competing downloads, then resume the game. Restart the console before canceling anything. If the same title repeatedly stops, cancel that installation and start it again from your Microsoft Store library. This sequence resolves many queue and temporary-state failures without deleting installed games.
The right fix depends on whether the game is digital or disc-based, whether progress is stuck at 0%, a fixed percentage, or 100%, whether other titles fail too, and whether the game is on internal or external storage. Use the decision table and steps below in that order so you do not reinstall a very large game unnecessarily.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Note the title, installation type, percentage shown, and exact wording of any error. Then compare the symptom with this table. The pattern determines which check should come first.

1. Clean up the Xbox download queue
Queue conflicts are the least destructive problem to fix. A game, update, system download, or another queued item may be using the available network and disk activity.

- Press the Xbox button and open My games & apps.
- Select Manage, then Queue.
- Review every item listed. Pause or cancel other game downloads and updates temporarily.
- Highlight the stuck game and choose Resume installation.
- Wait briefly while watching whether the percentage or transfer rate changes.
- If it stops at the same point again, highlight the title, choose the option to cancel that installation, and start it again from the Microsoft Store or your library.
Canceling removes the incomplete copy of that installation; it does not uninstall unrelated games. You will need to download the canceled title again, so use this step after pausing competing items and trying Resume installation.
2. Close the running game and restart the console
A game left running can compete with installation for bandwidth, storage activity, and system resources. Quit it before judging the queue.
- Press the Xbox button, highlight the running game, press the Menu button, and choose Quit.
- Open the power menu and select Restart console.
- After the Xbox signs in again, return to My games & apps > Manage > Queue and check the installation.
A normal restart preserves installed games and clears temporary operating state. If the queue is still frozen, perform a full power cycle:

- Disconnect the power cable briefly.
- Reconnect power and turn the console on.
- Sign in and check the queue again.
Do not interrupt power while the console is installing a system update. Let an update finish, then use the queue and restart steps for the game.

3. Test the network and isolate Wi-Fi problems
An installation can appear stuck when the console has lost connectivity, the wireless link is unstable, or the store cannot complete a request. Run the Xbox network test before deleting a large download.
- Open Settings > General > Network settings.
- Run the available test for network connection or network speed and statistics.
- Read the result for connection errors, packet loss, or a failure to reach Xbox services.
- Retry the installation after the connection is reported as working.
If Wi-Fi is suspect, connect the console directly to the router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable and run the test again. This is an optional diagnostic accessory, not a guarantee of a fix. A wired result helps separate wireless interference or a router problem from a store-service, account, or local-storage problem.
- If Ethernet works and Wi-Fi does not, restart the router, reduce wireless interference, or continue the install over the wired connection.
- If both wired and wireless fail, the cause may be Xbox service availability, the account or store request, storage, or the installation package itself.
- If the network test passes but only one game fails, return to the queue and reinstall that title rather than repeatedly changing network settings.
Service availability changes over time. Check the current Xbox service status in the console’s network or support interface before assuming an outage; an earlier or later status cannot establish that services are down now.
4. Verify free space and the installation location
Xbox needs enough room for the game and its update, and the required space can exceed the size of the initial download. The cited guidance does not establish a universal free-space threshold, so compare the space shown for your title with the free space reported on the selected drive and leave additional headroom for updates.

- Open My games & apps > Manage > Free up space, or open the console’s storage settings to view each drive.
- Confirm which drive the game is targeting and how much space remains.
- Remove or move items you no longer need, or select a different drive with adequate capacity.
- Retry the installation from the queue or store.
If only one external-drive title fails, power down the console, reseat the drive’s USB connection, and try installing the game on internal storage. Treat this as an isolation test, not proof that the external drive is defective. If the internal installation succeeds, inspect the external drive’s cable, connection, available space, and other titles before replacing it.
When an install reaches a fixed percentage and then stops, check storage before repeating the download. A nearly full drive may accept the initial data and fail when the game needs room to unpack or apply an update.
5. Recover a physical-disc installation that stops at 0%
Disc installs have a different failure mode: the console may try to install the base game while simultaneously requesting an update. For a physical disc that remains at zero or immediately reports Installation stopped, install the base content while offline, then reconnect for the update.

- Open Settings > General > Network settings and choose the option to go offline.
- Power-cycle the console using the full shutdown and brief power-disconnect procedure described above.
- Insert the disc and install the base game while the console remains offline.
- After the base game finishes, reconnect the network.
- Allow the game update to download separately and monitor the queue.
Remove fingerprints and dust with a soft, clean cloth and inspect the disc for visible damage. Replace the disc only when physical damage is evident; cleaning alone cannot repair a cracked or badly scratched disc.

6. Reinstall a digital game without disturbing other titles
If queue cleanup, a restart, network testing, and storage checks do not change the result, reinstall the affected digital title. This is appropriate when one game repeatedly stops at the same point or reaches 100% and then fails while other games install normally.
- In My games & apps > Manage > Queue, cancel the stuck installation.
- Confirm the canceled item is no longer active in the queue.
- Open My games & apps > Full library or the Microsoft Store page for the game.
- Select the game and choose Install.
- Watch the queue until the download starts, then avoid launching another game during the initial test.
Your license is associated with the account that owns the digital game, so reinstall from that same account. If the store does not offer Install, verify that you are signed in to the purchasing account before treating it as a download failure.

Stuck at 0%
First check whether the console is online and whether the queue is blocked by another item. For a disc, use the offline base-install procedure. For a digital title, restart, verify free space, and retry from the library after canceling the stalled queue entry.
Frozen at one percentage
Record the percentage, pause and resume once, then restart the console. If it returns to the same percentage, cancel and reinstall. Test internal storage when the title is targeting an external drive, and check that the drive has room for both the game and its update.

100% followed by an error
Restart before canceling. Confirm that the selected drive still has free space and that the console has completed any pending system update. If the error returns only for that game, reinstall it; if every title reaches completion and fails, move to the console-wide escalation steps.
8. Install pending Xbox system updates
An outdated console can fail while validating store content or applying an update. Open the console’s system-update area in Settings and install any pending Xbox update. Keep the console powered and connected until the update completes, then retry the game from the queue.
Do not confuse a system update with a game update. The former updates the console software; the latter is downloaded as part of the title’s queue entry. Both may require free storage and a working network connection.
9. When every game or app fails
If multiple games and apps still will not install after queue cleanup, network testing, restart and power cycle, storage checks, and a fresh installation attempt, the fault is broader than one game package. Record the exact error code and the point at which it appears; that information is more useful to support than a description such as "it will not download."
Before a complete factory wipe, use Reset and keep my games & apps in the console’s reset options. This refreshes system data while preserving installed games and apps, although you may need to sign in again and restore settings. Follow the on-screen warning and make sure you know the account credentials before proceeding.
A full reset that removes everything is a last resort because it deletes installed games, apps, accounts, and settings from the console. Do not choose it merely because one title is stuck. If the keep-my-games reset does not resolve a console-wide installation problem, contact Xbox Support with the error code, console behavior, network-test result, storage location, and whether the failure affects digital titles, discs, or both.

Preventing another stalled installation
- Keep enough free space for the full game and its update rather than relying on the initial download size.
- Pause or finish competing downloads before starting a large game.
- Quit a running game when troubleshooting an installation.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection temporarily when Wi-Fi reliability is uncertain.
- Keep the console system software current.
- For physical discs, keep them clean and inspect for damage before installing.
- Note whether a successful installation used internal or external storage; that comparison helps identify a failing connection later.
