Xbox error 0x87DD0005 is a sign-in handoff failure. After a Windows 11 update, the Xbox app or an Xbox-linked PC game may reject your account even though Microsoft Store and the Xbox app appear to accept it. Check Xbox service status first, then align the Store and Xbox accounts, update Windows and Store apps, repair (and only then reset) Xbox, Microsoft Store and Gaming Services, and run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool. Windows 11 N users should install Media Feature Pack. If the problem remains, test a second Windows profile and record exactly which sign-ins work.
Reports dated October 14–15, 2026 describe this pattern after Windows 11 updates KB5127648 and KB5127694, released October 13. Microsoft had not confirmed either update as the cause, and its published known-issues information did not list this Xbox code. Treat the timing as an association, not proof that the update caused the failure.
What error 0x87DD0005 means on a Windows PC
Microsoft’s Xbox GDK reference identifies 0x87dd0005 as AM_E_XAST_UNEXPECTED. In practical consumer terms, Windows, Xbox authentication, and the game or app have failed to complete a sign-in handoff. The code does not by itself identify whether the fault is an Xbox service outage, mismatched account credentials, damaged app data, Gaming Services, a Windows profile, or a developer sandbox configuration.

- Developer sandboxes: Microsoft documents the code when the Windows PC platform is not enabled for an app in Partner Center. That documented fix is for developers and sandbox environments, not evidence that an ordinary home PC has a Partner Center problem.
Because the code is shared, start with the consumer sequence below unless you are deliberately testing an Xbox title in a developer sandbox.
First, identify the failure you actually have
Before changing settings, write down where the failure occurs. This prevents you from repairing the wrong component and gives support a useful record.

Capture the exact code, the date and time, the Windows build shown in Settings, whether Store sign-in works, whether Xbox sign-in works, and whether every affected game fails. Do not assume that a successful Store login proves Xbox authentication is healthy; the two apps can reach different handoff stages.
Fix Xbox error 0x87DD0005 in the least disruptive order
The order below moves from checks that change nothing on your PC to repairs that remove local app data. Stop when the sign-in works. A restart is requested at several points because authentication tokens and Gaming Services processes can remain in memory after an app is closed.
1. Check Xbox service status
Open Microsoft’s official Xbox status page and look for an incident affecting Account & profile, sign-in, or the service used by your game. If a service is degraded, wait for Microsoft to restore it and retest instead of repeatedly resetting apps. A local repair cannot correct an outage on the account platform.

If the status page is normal, continue. A normal status page does not prove that your individual account or PC is healthy; it only makes a broad service interruption less likely.
2. Align Microsoft Store and Xbox accounts
Windows games can use Store licensing and Xbox identity at the same time. A Store account that owns the game or Game Pass subscription should normally be the same identity used by Xbox for the test.

- Open Microsoft Store, select your account picture, and sign out. Close Store.
- Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart. Use Restart rather than shutting down if Fast Startup is enabled.
- After Windows returns, open Microsoft Store first. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or the Game Pass entitlement you are testing.
- Open Xbox and sign in with that same account. Confirm the displayed gamertag and email identity.
- Launch the game again.
Do not switch between personal, work, school, or family Microsoft accounts during this test. If the account that owns the entitlement is different from the account you normally use for Xbox, note that difference rather than repeatedly signing in at random.
3. Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance starts with Windows Update, and its Microsoft Store guidance says to update Store apps from the Library page.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates. Install all offered updates that can be installed now.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then return to Windows Update and check once more.
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library.
- Select Get updates. Allow Xbox, Gaming Services, Microsoft Store, and related components to finish updating.
- Restart Windows once more and test the same account and game.
If an update is waiting for a restart, complete that restart before judging whether the repair worked. Record the Windows update identifiers installed around the time the error began; the October 2026 reports mentioned KB5127648 and KB5127694, but those reports did not establish either package as the cause.

4. Repair Xbox, then reset only if repair fails
Windows provides a non-destructive Repair action and a more disruptive Reset action for many Store apps. Repair is the first choice because it attempts to fix the installation without removing local app data.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair. Wait for it to finish, then open Xbox and test sign-in.
- If the code remains, return to Xbox > Advanced options and select Reset. Confirm the prompt.
- Sign in again and test the game.
Reset removes the Xbox app’s local data. It can sign you out and remove locally stored preferences, so have your account credentials available. It does not establish that the Windows update was responsible; it only rebuilds the app’s local state.
5. Repair or reset Microsoft Store and Gaming Services
Repeat the same sequence for the components involved in licensing and game installation:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Open Microsoft Store > Advanced options and select Repair. Test Store sign-in and the game.
- If needed, use Reset for Microsoft Store, then sign in again.
- Find Gaming Services > Advanced options and select Repair.
- Test Xbox and the game. If the error persists, return to Gaming Services and select Reset, then restart Windows.
Apply Reset only after Repair has failed for that specific app. Resetting all three components at once makes it harder to know which change helped and guarantees that you will need to authenticate again.
6. Run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC
Microsoft provides a Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC for failures in the service layer used by Xbox games. Open the tool from the Xbox app or Microsoft’s support instructions, follow each prompt, allow it to complete its checks and repairs, and restart Windows when prompted. Then sign in to Store first, Xbox second, and test the affected game.

If the tool reports that it cannot complete a repair, save the exact message. Do not infer that a successful-looking progress screen repaired account authentication; the meaningful test is whether the same game now completes sign-in.
7. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, Microsoft says to start the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Update troubleshooting and start the automated troubleshooter.
- Allow it to run its diagnostics and apply any recommended action.
- Restart Windows when instructed.
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install anything offered.
- Retest Microsoft Store, Xbox, and the game.
This troubleshooter addresses update components; it is not a direct Xbox account reset. Its value here is to correct an incomplete or unhealthy update state that may leave Store and Gaming Services packages out of sync.
8. Windows 11 N: install Media Feature Pack
Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies. If Settings > System > About identifies your edition as Windows 11 N, install the Media Feature Pack before deeper troubleshooting.

- Select View features or Add an optional feature, depending on the current Settings layout.
- Search for Media Feature Pack, select it, and choose Next followed by Install.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store, then Xbox, and test the game.
Do not install this package solely because you saw the error code; it is an edition-specific check for Windows 11 N.

9. Test with a temporary local Windows account
A second Windows profile is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed repair. It helps separate a profile-local problem from an account or service problem.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account, choose the option to add a user without using a Microsoft account, and create a temporary local account.
- Sign out of your normal profile and sign in to the temporary account.
- Open Microsoft Store and Xbox, sign in with the same Microsoft account used in your normal profile, and test the affected title if it is available to that profile.
If sign-in works only in the temporary profile, the original Windows profile likely contains damaged local app or identity data. If both profiles fail in the same way, an account, service, entitlement, or machine-wide component is more likely. Remove the temporary account after testing if you no longer need it.

Consumer PC versus developer sandbox: do not mix the fixes
Microsoft’s GDK reference says that, in its developer context, 0x87dd0005 (AM_E_XAST_UNEXPECTED) can mean the Windows PC platform is not enabled in Partner Center. The documented developer remedy is to enable Windows 10 (and later) PC, publish the Xbox settings, and allow about 30 minutes for propagation. The statement “Without this, sign-in will fail with error 0x87dd0005 (AM_E_XAST_UNEXPECTED)” applies to that configuration.
Use that procedure only when you own or administer the affected title’s Partner Center configuration and are testing a developer sandbox. A consumer who plays a purchased game or Game Pass title should not create a Partner Center project or change developer settings as a response to this code. For a normal PC, follow the service, account, update, app-repair, and profile tests above.
Common dead ends and why they are weak evidence
- Declaring the Windows update guilty: the October 2026 reports place the failures after KB5127648 and KB5127694, but Microsoft had not confirmed either update as the cause. Correlation in a user report is not a confirmed known issue.
- Resetting everything immediately: this erases local app state and signs you out before you have checked service status or account alignment. It also removes useful clues about which component failed.
- Assuming Store sign-in proves Xbox is fine: Store licensing and Xbox identity can fail at different stages, so a successful Store login does not rule out an Xbox handoff problem.
- Applying the Partner Center fix to a retail account: that guidance targets developer configurations and does not repair a consumer Windows profile.
- Relying on an anecdotal cache or service tweak: incident discussions include unsuccessful attempts as well as workarounds. No single cache-clearing step, service change, or reinstall is established as universal.
When the error persists
After completing the sequence, contact Xbox or Microsoft support with a compact, reproducible record rather than a description that only says “Xbox is broken.” Include:
- The exact code:
0x87DD0005, including where it appears. - The Windows 11 edition and build, and the update identifiers installed immediately before the failure.
- The date and time the problem began.
- Whether Microsoft Store sign-in works.
- Whether the Xbox app displays the correct account and gamertag.
- Whether one game or multiple Xbox-linked games fail.
- Whether Xbox service status showed an Account & profile incident when you tested.
- Which actions you completed: account alignment, updates, Repair, Reset, Gaming Services Repair Tool, Windows Update troubleshooter, Media Feature Pack (if applicable), and second-profile test.
- The result in the temporary profile, if you performed that test.
This record lets support distinguish a service-side authentication problem from damaged local app state, a Windows-profile issue, an entitlement mismatch, or a developer configuration error. Avoid posting passwords, recovery codes, product keys, or full account security details in a public forum.
