Most World of Warcraft access problems come from one of four mismatches: the wrong Battle.net account, an account-security lock, a damaged or undiscovered installation, or an entitlement that does not cover the version you selected. Install each WoW version from the Battle.net desktop app, use Locate the game when an existing copy is misidentified, and separate Modern WoW’s level-20 trial from Classic subscription requirements before changing files or buying game time.
The steps below follow Blizzard’s documented support paths for login, installation, download, update, and trial-access failures. Start with the symptom that matches your screen, then move to the error-code section if Battle.net displays one.
Start with the symptom, not a reinstall
Reinstalling the entire game is rarely the best first move. The same-looking button can represent a missing game path, a blocked download, an account lock, or an entitlement problem. Use this quick map before deleting anything:

Do not assume that a trial message, a login lock, and a failed patch have the same cause. They are handled by different Blizzard workflows.

How WoW installation and access are divided
Blizzard states: “All versions and game modes of World of Warcraft are installed through the Battle.net desktop app.” The launcher is therefore the starting point for both a new installation and an existing copy that Battle.net has lost track of.
Install the version you actually intend to play
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and sign in to the account that owns, or is intended to use, the game.
- Select the World of Warcraft icon in the game list.
- Choose the required product or mode: Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, or Cataclysm Classic.
- Click Install, select the storage location, and let Battle.net download that version.
Each listed version is installed separately. Installing Modern WoW does not automatically install WoW Classic Era or Cataclysm Classic, and selecting the wrong entry can make a working installation appear to be missing.
Why the correct account matters
Battle.net can display different games and entitlements for different accounts, even on the same computer. If a game appears unavailable, sign out and back in with the account that purchased the game time, completed the shop order, or redeemed the code. Check the account before moving folders or starting a fresh download.
Fix a login failure or security lock
A failed password and a security lock require different actions. If Blizzard reports unusual or suspicious login activity, it may require a secure verification step before allowing normal sign-in. Repeatedly entering credentials will not bypass that check.

Basic credential and account checks
- Confirm that the email address belongs to the intended Battle.net account; multiple accounts can exist on one computer.
- Re-enter the password carefully and check for an incorrect keyboard layout or an accidentally inserted space.
- Confirm that the Battle.net app is connected to the expected region and account before launching WoW.
- If the launcher requests a BattleTag, verify that the account has one and that it is entered or displayed correctly.
Use Blizzard’s recovery flow for an unusual-activity message
- Open Blizzard’s Can’t Log In account-recovery flow from the sign-in screen or Blizzard Support.
- Follow the identity and contact-verification prompts.
- Use the email address or phone number that is actually attached to the account. If you receive a phone notification, review it before approving the sign-in.
- If an Authenticator is enabled, respond to its approval request or code prompt.
- After access is restored, sign in to Battle.net again and confirm that the expected WoW entitlement is visible.
Phone notifications and an Authenticator can make legitimate recovery easier, but they do not replace the recovery process when the account is locked. If you no longer control the account’s email or phone, provide that information in the recovery case instead of creating a second account and expecting the entitlement to transfer.
When Battle.net says Install for an existing game
An Install button does not prove that the WoW files are gone. Battle.net may have lost the installation path after a drive-letter change, app reset, permissions change, or manual move.
- Select the WoW entry in Battle.net.
- Choose Locate the game rather than starting another download.
- Browse to the folder that contains the existing WoW installation and select that folder.
- Allow Battle.net to scan and register the files.
- Confirm that the button changes from Install to Play.
Choose the folder that directly contains the installed game, not a parent folder containing several unrelated games. If the button does not change to Play, verify that you selected the same product (Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, or Cataclysm Classic) that the files belong to. A Classic installation cannot be registered as Modern WoW simply by pointing the launcher at it.

Fix a WoW download or update that will not start
Download failures are usually caused by the selected product, the network path, security software, a competing process, or damaged Battle.net launcher data. Work through these checks in order so that you can identify the change that fixes the problem.

1. Confirm the selected game and storage path
- Check the WoW icon and the mode name shown in Battle.net before downloading.
- Make sure the destination drive is connected and has enough free space for the selected installation and its update.
- If an old copy already exists, use Locate the game instead of downloading a second copy.
2. Test the connection
Use a stable connection and retry the download. If the download works on another network, the original network path, router, or filtering service is the likely cause. A temporary server-side problem can also prevent a launcher from reaching Blizzard; retry later rather than repeatedly deleting the installation.
3. Permit Blizzard applications through security software
Firewall, antivirus, endpoint-control, and similar security tools can block the Battle.net app or the downloaded game files. Allow the Blizzard applications through the security product, then restart Battle.net and retry. Use the security software’s own allow-list terminology; do not disable protection permanently just to test one download.
4. Close conflicting applications
Quit applications that may lock game files, intercept the network, or modify the launcher while an update is running. Restart Battle.net after closing them and let the update run without repeatedly pausing and resuming it.

If the launcher reports that files cannot be opened, the documented error-specific remedy includes deleting the Battle.net Tools folder so the app can rebuild it.

- Exit Battle.net completely, including its background process.
- Locate the Battle.net Tools folder used by the launcher.
- Delete that folder.
- Start the downloaded Battle.net client again and sign in.
- Retry the WoW download or update.
Use this cleanup for the cited file-open condition, not as a routine first step for every slow download. If the launcher cannot be closed normally, restart the computer before removing the folder so no Battle.net process is still using it.
Error code BLZBNTBNA00000A8E
BLZBNTBNA00000A8E can be caused by a server-side problem or by an account that is missing a BattleTag. The code alone does not prove that the WoW installation is damaged.
Check the BattleTag first
- Open the Battle.net account profile.
- Confirm that a BattleTag is present and that the launcher is signed in to the intended account.
- Sign out and back in after correcting the account information.
If the error remains
- Retry after a short interval in case the service-side condition has cleared.
- Reinstall the Battle.net launcher if its installation is damaged.
- Run the launcher from an administrator account when account permissions are preventing it from completing its checks.
- Test another network to distinguish a local connection or filtering problem from a service-side failure.
Record the exact code and the time it appeared. That information helps support distinguish an account or service condition from a local launcher failure.

BLZBNTBTS0000004E indicates that the launcher cannot open one or more files. Blizzard’s documented checks target the downloaded client, the connection, security software, competing applications, and the Battle.net Tools folder.

- Start with the downloaded Battle.net client rather than an incomplete or damaged launcher copy.
- Check that the network connection remains stable during the download or update.
- Allow Blizzard applications through firewall and antivirus controls.
- Close applications that may be using or locking the affected files.
- Exit Battle.net, delete the Battle.net Tools folder, relaunch the downloaded client, and retry.
If the same file-open error returns after these checks, note the file name shown with the code, the selected WoW mode, and which steps you completed. Submit those details in the Technical category of Blizzard’s WoW support hub.

The most important distinction is between Modern WoW and the Classic versions. Modern WoW is free to download and play through level 20. Classic versions and selected modes require game time or a subscription.

When Battle.net says you need a subscription
- Identify the mode displayed in the launcher: Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, Cataclysm Classic, or another selected mode.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Battle.net account that should receive the entitlement.
- If you recently paid through the Blizzard shop, check that the order status is Complete, not pending or failed.
- If you used a code from a third party, confirm that it was redeemed on this same Battle.net account.
- Sign out and back in after an order or redemption has completed, then reopen the WoW product page.
A completed purchase on one Battle.net account does not unlock a different account. Likewise, installing a Classic client does not make the Modern WoW level-20 trial apply to that Classic mode.

Why the level-20 message can appear unexpectedly
If a character has reached level 20 in Modern WoW, the trial boundary—not a failed download—may be the reason the launcher asks for game time or a subscription. If the character is below level 20, check the account and mode first; do not purchase a second entitlement until those two details are confirmed.
Separate account problems from launcher, file, and network problems
This distinction prevents wasted troubleshooting:

When to contact Blizzard support
Use Blizzard’s World of Warcraft support hub when the documented self-service steps do not resolve the problem. The hub routes cases through four categories:
- Account: sign-in failures, unusual activity, locked accounts, and recovery.
- Payments: missing game time, incomplete orders, or an entitlement that did not appear after payment.
- Technical: launcher errors, download and update failures, file-open errors, and connection problems.
- In-Game Issues: problems that occur after you can launch and enter the game.
Choose the category that matches the cause rather than simply selecting the most recent error message. Include the exact error code, the WoW mode, the Battle.net account used, whether the shop order says Complete, and the steps already attempted. For an account-security case, state whether you can access the registered email or phone; for a download case, state whether another network or the Battle.net Tools reset changed the result.

How to avoid creating a second problem
- Do not reinstall a game that Battle.net can locate; registering the existing folder is faster and preserves the current files.
- Do not buy game time before confirming the account and WoW mode that produced the message.
- Do not treat a security lock as a damaged installation.
- Do not delete game folders when the error specifically concerns Battle.net Tools data.
- Do not permanently disable firewall or antivirus protection; add the required Blizzard applications to the appropriate allow list instead.
- Keep the exact code and wording of the message for support, because similar symptoms can route to different teams.
