Most post-patch addon failures come from one of four causes: WoW has not been restarted, the files are in the wrong game folder, the addon targets a different game flavor or interface version, or its local files are damaged or intentionally modified. Exit the game, verify the exact AddOns path and Retail/Classic flavor, update the addon, then reinstall or isolate it if the problem remains. “Load Out of Date Addons” is only a temporary compatibility test—not a repair.
What changes after a WoW patch
A World of Warcraft patch can change the game interface (API) that addons use. An addon built for an older interface may still open if the change was harmless, but it can also produce Lua errors, hide part of the user interface, stop a feature from working, or prevent the addon from loading. Authors release compatible files on their own schedules. Some update almost immediately; others take longer, and some may never receive a compatible release.
The game can also report an addon as out of date when the files themselves are fine. A warning describes the interface version the file targets; it does not prove that the addon is broken. Conversely, an addon with no warning can still fail because of a code error, a corrupted download, a flavor mismatch, or a conflict with another addon.

Use this repair order first
Work from the least destructive fix to the most involved. After every addon change, fully exit World of Warcraft and start it again. Blizzard’s addon FAQ states that WoW does not register addon changes until you exit and restart the game.

- Exit WoW completely. Leave the character-selection screen, close the game client, and wait for it to finish shutting down.
- Check the installation path and game flavor. Confirm that each addon folder is directly under the correct
World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOnsdirectory for your installation. - Update the addon. In your addon manager, select the matching Retail, Classic, or Classic Era instance and use Update or Update All.
- Reinstall files that are corrupt, mismatched, or modified. Back up your settings first, then remove and install the addon again in the correct instance.
- Test “Load Out of Date Addons” only when you need a temporary workaround. Disable the addon again if errors or broken interface elements appear.
- Isolate conflicts. Disable everything, restart, and re-enable addons in small groups or one at a time while reproducing the problem.
1. Restart WoW before changing files
WoW reads addon files during startup. Leaving the client open while an addon manager downloads an update can make the new files appear to have no effect. Close the game before updating, reinstalling, deleting, or moving an addon. Once the operation is complete, launch WoW again and check the AddOns list at character select.
Restart after each meaningful change rather than making several changes at once. That gives you a clear before-and-after result and prevents an old session from masking a successful repair.
2. Verify the AddOns folder and the game installation
The required folder structure
Blizzard’s FAQ gives the required location as World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns. The addon’s own folder—not a second folder created by extracting a ZIP—must sit inside AddOns. A common broken layout looks like this:

Move that inner folder up one level when an archive has added an extra layer. Do not place addons in the game’s main directory, the desktop, or a downloads folder.
Choose the correct WoW instance
Modern installations keep separate directories for different game flavors. Check the instance you actually launch:
_retail_for the current Retail client- The Classic client directory for the Classic version you play
- The Classic Era client directory when you play Classic Era
Each instance has its own Interface/AddOns folder. Installing an addon in Retail while launching Classic, or the reverse, makes it appear to have disappeared even though the files are present elsewhere. If you maintain more than one flavor, repeat the path check for each one instead of copying files blindly between them.
Check whether WoW sees the folder
At character select, open AddOns. If the addon is absent from the list, the path, archive nesting, or game flavor is the first thing to fix. If it appears but is marked out of date, the game has found the files and the next decision is compatibility, not location.

3. Confirm Retail, Classic, or Classic Era in your addon manager
Addon managers normally provide a game-flavor selector. Set it to the client you intend to launch before searching, updating, or installing. CurseForge support notes that a flavor mismatch can produce a “belongs to” warning and prevent compatibility.
Remove ambiguity when several installations are present:
- Close WoW.
- Open the addon manager’s game or instance selector.
- Choose Retail, Classic, or Classic Era to match the launcher entry you use.
- Locate the addon in that instance and run Update or Reinstall.
- Start the same game flavor and check the AddOns panel.
An addon packaged for another flavor is not made compatible by checking “Load Out of Date Addons.” It needs files intended for the client you are running.
4. Update the addon, then reinstall when necessary
Update first
Use the manager’s Update or Update All control after selecting the correct game flavor. A major release can leave different addons at different states: one may already have a compatible build while another is still waiting for its author. CurseForge support, modified 18 August 2025, explains that some authors update almost immediately and that release timing varies.
After updating, restart WoW and test the exact character, zone, or action that exposed the problem. Do not assume that a successful download means the addon loaded; verify it in the in-game AddOns list and in the interface itself.
When a reinstall is safer
Reinstall when the manager reports a corrupt file, when an update repeatedly fails, or when the local folder contains files you did not expect. CurseForge describes a corrupt addon as one whose local file may not match server metadata. Its recommended path is to use Update or Reinstall; if needed, delete the addon, select the correct instance, and install it again.
Before deleting anything, back up both the addon files and your saved settings. Copy the complete Interface/AddOns content and the WTF folder to a separate location. The AddOns copy preserves locally installed code; the WTF copy contains saved variables and other interface settings that may be difficult to recreate.

- Exit WoW.
- Back up
Interface/AddOnsandWTF. - In the manager, select the intended Retail, Classic, or Classic Era instance.
- Choose Reinstall. If that option fails, remove only the affected addon folder and install it again.
- Restart WoW and test before restoring any manually edited files.
Why an update may be skipped
Managers intentionally avoid overwriting files identified as Modified or Working Copy. Those labels mean local changes were detected. Automatic replacement is skipped to protect your edits, so you must decide whether to keep the working copy, restore the original release, or remove it and perform a clean install. Preserve a backup before choosing the last option.

These labels identify different repair paths. Treating every warning as an out-of-date problem can waste time: a “belongs to” warning calls for a flavor correction, while a “modified” label calls for a decision about local edits.
6. Decide whether to load an out-of-date addon
How to enable the fallback
At character select, open AddOns and check Load Out of Date Addons. Start with only the addon you need to test, not every outdated addon in the list. This setting allows an older file to start; it does not change the file or repair an API incompatibility.
When the test is reasonable
An unchanged addon may continue to work when a patch has not affected the API calls it uses. Use the toggle as a short-term test when you need to confirm whether the addon still functions while waiting for an update. Check its visible features and watch for Lua errors.
When to stop using it
Disable the addon if errors appear, controls are missing, data is not updating, or the rest of the interface behaves incorrectly. An out-of-date addon can fail silently as well as visibly. CurseForge support cautions that running a current file without a compatible version may not work as expected and recommends waiting for the author when no compatible release is available. Use the default Blizzard interface temporarily rather than accepting repeated errors or risking corrupted saved settings.
7. Find the addon that is actually breaking
Patch failures often involve more than one addon. A library or shared component can trigger an error that appears to belong to another addon, and one failure can cause later errors to cascade. Identify the first error rather than reacting to the last message on screen.
- At character select, open AddOns and disable every addon.
- Restart WoW.
- Reproduce the original action with the default interface.
- If the problem is gone, enable a small group of related addons and restart.
- Repeat until the problem returns, then test members of that group one at a time.
- Record the first Lua error, the addon named in it, and the action that triggered it.
This is practical isolation guidance rather than a claim that Blizzard publishes it as an official test procedure. It is useful because it changes one variable at a time and distinguishes an addon defect from a path or client-wide problem.

Read the result correctly
- No error with all addons disabled: one or more addons are involved; continue the group-and-single-addon test.
- The error remains with all addons disabled: the cause may not be an addon, so stop deleting addon files and examine the game client or another recent change.
- Only one addon fails: update or reinstall it, then check whether its author has published a compatible release.
- Several addons fail together: look first for the shared library, common UI component, wrong flavor, or a patch-wide interface change.
Capture the first error before reloading the interface or enabling more addons. Later messages may only be consequences of the original failure.
8. Protect settings before deeper cleanup
The WTF folder holds saved variables and interface configuration. Deleting it can remove character- and account-level settings even when it fixes a damaged configuration. Keep a copy before resetting anything.
Safe backup scope
Interface/AddOns: installed addon folders and any local code or working copies.WTF: saved variables and interface settings.
Store the backups outside the WoW installation so a later reinstall does not remove them. If you need a clean test, rename the live folders rather than deleting the backups. Start WoW with the renamed folders, verify the result, and restore individual settings only after the base client is stable.
When not to reset everything
A wrong path, flavor mismatch, or one corrupt addon does not justify deleting the entire interface configuration. Broad cleanup makes it harder to identify the cause and can turn a repair into a settings-rebuild project. Use the smallest change that tests your current hypothesis.

Start with the top of the table. A temporary toggle is faster than waiting, but an update or clean reinstall is the durable fix when a compatible release exists. Deleting files is the least reversible option and belongs at the end of the decision path.
What to do when no update exists
If the addon is correctly installed, matches your game flavor, and still has no compatible release, there may be nothing to repair locally. Wait for the addon author to publish a compatible version or use the default interface temporarily. You can test the current file with Load Out of Date Addons, but treat the result as provisional and disable it at the first sign of errors or incorrect behavior.
Do not copy a Retail release into Classic, substitute a different flavor’s files, or repeatedly reinstall the same incompatible build. Those actions change the files without supplying the interface compatibility the patch requires.

Symptoms and the quickest matching check
“My addons disappeared”
Check the active client directory and the direct Interface/AddOns path first. An extra extraction folder or installing into Retail while launching Classic commonly produces an empty AddOns list.
“The addon is listed but does nothing”
Restart WoW, update the addon, and test with “Load Out of Date Addons” only if no current release exists. If it remains inactive, disable other addons and isolate it.
“I get a belongs-to warning”
Select the correct Retail, Classic, or Classic Era instance in the manager and reinstall the addon there. The warning is a flavor mismatch, not evidence that the addon merely needs the out-of-date checkbox.

Back up your settings, then use Update or Reinstall. If the manager continues to report corruption, remove the affected folder and perform a clean install in the selected flavor.
“The manager will not update it”
Look for a Modified or Working Copy label. Automatic updating is intentionally skipped to avoid overwriting local edits. Save those edits separately and choose whether to keep the working copy or replace it.
“The game shows many Lua errors after the patch”
Disable all addons, restart, and record the first error when testing groups. The first named addon or shared library is more useful than the later cascade of messages.
A clean post-patch checklist
- WoW is fully closed before addon changes are made.
- The addon folder is directly under the active client’s
Interface/AddOnspath. - The manager and launcher point to the same Retail, Classic, or Classic Era instance.
- The addon has been updated, or its unavailable update is understood.
- Corrupt, mismatched, or modified files have been handled deliberately.
- “Load Out of Date Addons” is used only as a temporary test.
- All addons have been isolated if the first fixes did not identify the offender.
- Backups of both
Interface/AddOnsandWTFexist before deletion or reset.
Why these fixes work
Restarting makes WoW reread the files. Correct placement makes the client discover them. Matching the game flavor supplies files built for the client you launch. Updating replaces an older interface target with a compatible release when the author has published one. Reinstalling removes local corruption or incomplete updates. Isolation separates one addon’s failure from a conflict or cascade. Backups preserve the settings that a cleanup can otherwise erase.
