Those are different workflows and need different troubleshooting. Try Word’s export options first; if you were saving to SharePoint from Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows, check the specific issue Microsoft says was fixed in September 2026.
First identify how Word is creating the PDF
In Word, check whether you chose File > Save As or File > Export and selected PDF, or instead chose File > Print and selected a PDF printer. Word’s desktop apps include built-in PDF/XPS conversion, so you do not need to print through a separate PDF printer just to make a PDF. Microsoft’s instructions for the built-in workflow are in Save or convert to PDF or XPS in Office Desktop apps.
Also note Word’s platform and version, where you are saving (for example, a local folder, network folder, OneDrive, or SharePoint), and whether the PDF has a nonzero file size. These details help distinguish an export problem from a print or destination problem.
If you used Word’s built-in PDF export
Check the export options
Open the PDF export or Save As options and verify the page selection and whether markup is included. If only certain pages appear, or expected tracked changes or comments are missing, adjust those settings and create the PDF again. These options can explain omitted pages or markup; Microsoft does not identify them as a universal fix for a completely blank PDF.

Try a simple test document
Create a new document with a short line of text and export it to a local folder. If the test document works, the issue may be specific to the original document or its settings. If it is also blank or fails, note the result for troubleshooting; it helps establish whether the problem is limited to one file.
If you saved the PDF to SharePoint on Word for Windows
Microsoft documented a narrow issue affecting Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows after version 2609 (16.0.20430.x): using Save As PDF with SharePoint Online as the destination could show no error while saving a randomly named file under C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCacheContent.MSO instead of the intended SharePoint location. This was not a general explanation for blank PDFs saved locally.

Microsoft Support says the service fix fully rolled out on September 25, 2026. If you still encounter this specific SharePoint behavior, close all open Office apps and reopen Word. If you used Print to PDF
Treat this as a printing problem rather than a failure of Word’s native PDF export. Microsoft’s general printing troubleshooting guidance for Word, Excel, and other apps recommends checking the output device and print settings.

- In Word, open File > Print and confirm the selected printer is the intended PDF printer.
- Check the page range, paper size, and layout settings. Print a short range or a simple document to see whether the output changes.
- Try printing a different Word document, then try printing from another app. If only one document fails, the problem may be document-specific; if multiple apps fail, investigate the printer or Windows print path.
- If other print paths also fail, check printer connectivity and drivers. Microsoft also recommends repairing Office for Office-related printing problems. These are print-path steps, not verified fixes for Word’s built-in PDF export.
Update Word, then gather details if the problem continues
Microsoft’s general Word troubleshooting guidance recommends installing current Office and Windows updates before deeper troubleshooting. For Word-specific guidance, see How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word. Microsoft also maintains recent fixes or workarounds for Word for Windows.
If the issue remains, record the exact Word version and build, operating system, whether you exported or printed, the destination, whether the resulting file has a nonzero size, and whether a new simple document also produces a blank PDF. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal fix for every blank-PDF scenario.
