Start by charging the mouse and moving its receiver into a clear, nearby USB port. Then test the USB connection, tracking surface, pairing, and computer in that order. A cursor that skips can point to a sensor or surface issue; delays or dropouts can come from power, receiver placement, interference, USB, pairing, or the computer.
1. Charge the mouse and move the receiver closer
- Charge or replace the battery. Fully charge a rechargeable mouse or install fresh batteries before investigating other causes. Low power can affect both movement and connection.
- Connect the receiver directly to the computer. For diagnosis, avoid a hub or KVM switch if possible. Use a USB port you know works.
- Reposition the receiver. A short USB extension cable can place it closer to the mouse and farther from the computer case, USB 3.0 cables or devices, routers, and other 2.4 GHz equipment. Check that the extension’s connector matches the receiver.
For its gaming mice, Logitech recommends keeping the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse and at least 2 meters from wireless routers and other 2.4 GHz devices. These are Logitech’s recommendations, not universal distance requirements or guarantees. Follow the guidance for your specific model when available. If you suspect nearby wireless equipment, temporarily switch it off or move it and check whether the mouse behavior changes.
2. Check the USB port and nearby USB 3.0 equipment
Try another USB port, keeping the receiver directly connected. If it is beside USB 3.0 equipment, move it away and, if available, test a USB 2.0 port. Logitech notes that USB 3.0 equipment can interfere with some 2.4 GHz receivers, causing delayed input or reduced wireless operating distance; this does not mean every USB 3.0 port will cause a problem.
A USB extension cable can help separate the receiver from the computer and nearby cables without changing the mouse. Change one thing at a time, then move the mouse and observe whether the symptom improves. That makes it easier to identify whether receiver placement or the USB path is involved.

3. Tell a tracking problem from a wireless dropout
If the pointer moves erratically while the connection otherwise seems steady, check the sensor and surface before treating it as a radio problem.
- Turn the mouse off and inspect the sensor opening. Gently remove dust or debris from the lens; do not scrape it.
- Try the mouse on plain white paper or another known-good mouse surface. A reflective, transparent, patterned, or otherwise unsuitable surface can interfere with tracking.
- If the pointer still skips, consult the exact model’s support instructions for surface tuning, tracking-height settings, polling options, or firmware. Do not assume these settings exist on every mouse.
Logitech’s guidance lists sensor optics, surface or tracking settings, polling and firmware, battery, and connection or interference as distinct possible causes of tracking trouble. A stable radio link with erratic cursor movement therefore calls for sensor and surface checks as well as connection checks.

4. Re-pair the mouse only with its model-specific process
If the connection was lost or the receiver was moved, use the manufacturer’s re-pairing instructions for the exact mouse and receiver. Pairing tools and receiver compatibility vary by model: a receiver that fits another mouse is not necessarily compatible. Avoid buying or substituting a receiver until the manufacturer confirms support for that model.
Use only the manufacturer’s currently supported software and instructions to check for firmware updates or surface settings. Logitech’s support material notes that some older utilities are no longer supported and directs users to Logi Options+ for supported devices. Do not install a legacy utility or firmware intended for a different model.

5. Test another computer to isolate the cause
After charging, checking the USB path, and confirming the surface, connect the receiver to a second computer and test the mouse. If the problem follows the mouse and receiver, the fault is more likely on the mouse, receiver, or pairing side. If it occurs only on the original computer, investigate that computer’s USB port or configuration. Logitech’s general connection guidance also recommends trying another port, re-pairing, charging fully, and testing on another computer.
Manufacturer support pages provide model-dependent troubleshooting rather than a universal diagnosis, and they do not establish a guaranteed latency reduction from any one step. If the problem persists across computers after these checks, consult the support page for the precise model before replacing hardware.
