Windows Update error 0x80070003 means “The system cannot find the path specified,” but it does not identify one universal cause. Confirm the failed update in Update history, then try the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the update service, and clear the update cache before moving on to system and disk repairs.
The steps below follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 troubleshooting guidance. Try them in order, checking Windows Update again after each repair.
1. Check which update failed
A message such as “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes” does not identify the cause. Microsoft recommends checking Update history for the specific error code.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Update history.
- Find the failed update and confirm that it shows 0x80070003. Note its name or KB number.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance recommends starting with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help from Start, search for Windows Update problems, and follow the diagnostic prompts.
You can also run the troubleshooter in Settings:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any recommended fix and restart if prompted.

3. Check the Windows Update service
A stopped or disabled Windows Update service can prevent updates from downloading or installing. Microsoft’s instructions are to start a stopped service and set a disabled service to Automatic.
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Windows Update.
- If its status is Stopped, right-click it and select Start.
- If it is disabled, right-click it, select Properties, and set Startup type to Automatic.
- If the service is stopped, select Start, then select Apply > OK.

4. Clear the Windows Update cache
Microsoft recommends clearing the contents of the Windows Update cache, while leaving the SoftwareDistribution folder itself in place.
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Update and select Stop.
- In File Explorer, open C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
- Delete all files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the folder itself.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC, then select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
If files cannot be deleted, make sure the Windows Update service is stopped and try again. Source: Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
5. Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM first, followed by System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the component source that SFC may need.
- Search for command prompt in the taskbar.
- Right-click Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for “The operation completed successfully”. DISM may take some time; if it does not report success, retype the command and run it again.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until “Verification 100% complete”, then type exit. Restart Windows and try Windows Update again. Sources: Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions and Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
6. Check the system drive for file-system errors
Microsoft recommends checking the Windows drive for file-system errors with an elevated Command Prompt.

- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Find the suspect update, select Uninstall, and confirm.
- Restart and test Windows Update.

It means “The system cannot find the path specified.” Microsoft does not identify one universal cause. Source: Microsoft’s error guidance.

Will clearing the Windows Update cache delete my personal files?
The documented procedure removes cached files inside C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, not the folder itself. Follow the steps carefully and stop Windows Update before deleting its contents.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I run SFC or DISM first?
Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth first and wait for “The operation completed successfully.” Then run sfc /scannow and wait for “Verification 100% complete.” Source: Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
Why is the Windows Update troubleshooter path different from older guides?
The current Windows 11 Settings path is Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. The Update & Security path is for Windows 10. Microsoft also recommends the Get Help app’s automated troubleshooter for Windows 11.
Does “Fix problems using Windows Update” remove programs or files?
No. Microsoft says it reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, personal files, and settings. Source: Microsoft’s repair reinstall instructions.
The Bottom Line
Confirm the error in Update history, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and then check the service and cache. If those steps do not work, run DISM followed by SFC, check the Windows drive with CHKDSK, and review network, VPN, or security-software conflicts. Microsoft’s repair reinstall is a further option that preserves apps and files.
