The message “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running” does not identify one fault. The service may be stopped, the update cache may be damaged, the clock or network may be wrong, prerequisite updates may be missing, or the operating system may simply be outside Microsoft support. Identify the exact Windows release first, then work through the least-destructive repairs below.
First identify the Windows version and support status
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Record the edition, version, service pack, and whether Windows is 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64). You can find architecture in Control Panel → System.
Do not treat these releases as interchangeable. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are different products, and Windows 7 without Service Pack 1 is not equivalent to Windows 7 SP1.
| Release | Support reality | What a repair can achieve |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Vista | Far beyond normal support | It may restore a legacy client, but it cannot provide current Microsoft security servicing. |
| Windows 7 | Support ended January 14, 2020; the final three-year ESU period ended January 10, 2023. See Microsoft’s Windows 7 lifecycle. | It may scan or install a particular legacy package, but ordinary current security support is not restored. |
| Windows 8 | Its lifecycle ended earlier than Windows 8.1. | Check the exact edition before downloading anything. |
| Windows 8.1 | Support ended January 10, 2023; see Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance. | A repaired client may apply a specific legacy update, not current security updates. |
Retail, OEM, Enterprise, and embedded editions can have different lifecycle terms. If the computer is unsupported, plan an upgrade, replacement, or offline role even if the error is fixed.
Why the “service is not running” message appears
Windows can display this wording when wuauserv is stopped or disabled, but also when its database is corrupt, the Windows Update Agent is obsolete, required servicing or SHA-2 updates are absent, HTTPS validation fails because the clock is wrong, a proxy or WSUS policy blocks Microsoft, or the system is too old for available update infrastructure. Microsoft documents an obsolete agent condition, WU_E_SELFUPDATE_REQUIRED, in its Windows Update Agent guidance.

Low-risk checks before changing Windows files
Restart and check the clock
Restart once to clear a pending reboot. Then set the correct date, time, and time zone in Control Panel → Date and Time. This matters on legacy systems because an incorrect clock can invalidate certificates, HTTPS connections, and update signatures. A dead CMOS battery may reset the clock after every shutdown.
Verify the network and remove temporary interference
Open an elevated or ordinary Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
ping download.windowsupdate.com
A failed ping is not conclusive because Microsoft can block ICMP. Also check VPN software, proxy settings, third-party firewalls or antivirus, and networks requiring browser sign-in. If you temporarily disable third-party security software for a diagnostic, re-enable it immediately.
Check disk space and pending servicing
Leave reasonable free space on the system drive for downloads, extraction, and installation. Do not interrupt an update that is already installing. Back up important files and create a restore point if the option is available before making service or cache changes.
Make sure the update services can start
Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and inspect:
- Windows Update (
wuauserv) - Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
- Cryptographic Services (
CryptSvc) - When a repair requires them, Windows Installer and Windows Modules Installer
Open Windows Update, click Start if it is stopped, and record any exact error. Check its startup type, but do not force every Windows service to Automatic: some are designed to start manually or on demand. If the service starts and immediately stops, proceed to cache repair instead of repeatedly clicking Start.

Reset the Windows Update cache safely
Microsoft’s troubleshooting procedure uses the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 stores. Renaming them preserves a fallback copy and is safer than deleting them.
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run each command separately:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start wuauserv
net start bits
- Restart the computer and test Windows Update.
The renamed folders contain update cache, database, and signature data, not personal documents. Windows recreates fresh folders; old update history may no longer appear in the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a folder cannot be renamed
A service may still hold a file, the prompt may not be elevated, antivirus may have a file open, servicing may be in progress, or permissions may be damaged. Reboot, open an elevated prompt immediately, stop the services again, and retry. Safe Mode can help release a lock, but return to normal Windows before testing Windows Update because service behavior differs there. Do not force-delete system folders.
Check system integrity without using a universal repair script
Run this built-in diagnostic from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Record whether SFC repaired files or found corruption it could not repair. Component-store repair differs substantially between Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8/8.1, so use the procedure and repair source for the exact release rather than copying one generic DISM command across all versions. Older guides that register dozens of DLLs with regsvr32 are not a first-line fix; many DLLs are not components intended for manual registration.
Windows 7 SP1: install prerequisites before scanning
Windows 7 SP1 deserves a separate path after a clean installation. Microsoft discontinued SHA-1-based Windows Update endpoints in 2020, requiring SHA-2 support on affected older systems (Microsoft’s SHA-2 guidance).

- Confirm that
winverreports Windows 7 SP1. - Confirm x86 or x64 architecture.
- Install the applicable servicing-stack update first.
- Install the required SHA-2 support update.
- Reboot whenever the installer requests it, then test Windows Update again.
Microsoft explains that servicing-stack updates precede the applicable cumulative, monthly rollup, or security-only update in its Servicing Stack Updates FAQ. Do not rely on a permanent copied KB list: packages are superseded, architecture-specific, and sometimes limited to SP1.
Microsoft identifies Windows Update Agent version 7.6.7600.256 for Windows 7, Vista, and XP in its agent guidance. Confirm the operating system and service pack before obtaining any package; never use unofficial driver or DLL sites. Windows 8.1 with update 2919355 already includes the latest agent identified in that guidance, but an updated agent alone cannot replace missing prerequisites.
Install one needed package through Microsoft Update Catalog
Manual installation is useful when the client cannot scan, but it does not make an unsupported computer secure.
- Search the exact KB number at Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Read the package description and match the exact Windows release, service pack, architecture, and update type.
- Download only from the catalog domain.
- Install, reboot, and test again.
If the package says “not applicable,” stop rather than forcing it. Microsoft notes that updates can be superseded; its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance explains how applicability and update source affect results.
Check proxy, WSUS, and policy interference
A former business PC, privacy utility, registry tweak, or malware-removal tool may leave an unavailable WSUS server or proxy configured. Inspect the WinHTTP setting with:
netsh winhttp show proxy
Record the existing value before changing anything. Do not run netsh winhttp reset proxy blindly on a domain-managed computer: it can break enterprise administration. Distinguish Microsoft Windows Update from Microsoft Update, WSUS, and third-party patch management; each can offer a different update source and policy.

Interpret common results
| Result | Likely areas to check |
|---|---|
| “The service is not running” | wuauserv configuration, malware or security interference, or a corrupt update store. |
| “Checking for updates” runs indefinitely | Obsolete agent, missing Windows 7 prerequisites, corrupt database, proxy/connectivity failure, or a large fresh-install backlog. |
0x80072ee2 |
Timeout or endpoint connectivity: DNS, proxy, firewall, TLS/certificates, or obsolete infrastructure. Microsoft discusses this family in its SHA-1 endpoint guidance. |
0x80248014 |
Update database or service problem; reset the update store and verify services. |
0x80070005 |
Access denied, permissions, security software, or update-store corruption; see Microsoft’s error guidance. |
| “No updates” | The scan may have succeeded, failed silently, lacked prerequisites, or found no updates because the OS is unsupported. Check Update history, the error code, and available logs. |
When repair is no longer the responsible answer
If the computer runs Vista, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023, or Windows 7 after its ESU period, a successful cache reset proves only that the client can function. It does not restore current security maintenance. Back up data before deciding whether the hardware can run a supported release. Microsoft’s official starting points are Windows 11, the Windows 11 download page, and supported Windows PCs. If the disk is failing or the system will not boot, prioritize a verified file copy or professional data recovery over repeated update resets. Hardware that cannot run a supported Windows version may be safer as an offline machine or with a maintained alternative operating system, provided your applications and support needs allow it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Windows Update still work on Windows 7?
The client may still scan or install a particular legacy package after service, cache, and prerequisite repairs, but ordinary Windows 7 support ended January 14, 2020 and the final ESU period ended January 10, 2023. That is not current security support.
Can Windows Vista receive current updates after this repair?
No. Vista is an unsupported legacy platform. Repair it only for a specific historical or offline purpose, and avoid treating a working update client as evidence that the system is secure.
Does renaming SoftwareDistribution delete personal files?
No. It moves Windows Update’s cache and database folder. Renaming is reversible and safer than deleting; Windows creates a new folder after the services restart.
Should I use a one-click Windows Update repair utility?
Avoid unofficial repair tools, registry cleaners, driver updaters, and ISO sites. Use built-in commands and Microsoft documentation or Catalog packages matched to the exact release.
Is Windows 8 the same as Windows 8.1 for update packages?
No. Run winver and match the exact release before downloading any package.
