If a Windows optional feature change will not complete, first check the feature’s actual servicing state. A restart may finish a change marked pending; if Windows cannot find required files, it may need access to Windows Update or a compatible local repair source. On a work- or school-managed PC, policy can control both the feature interface and the repair source.
Check the feature’s state
Start by identifying the feature and querying the running Windows installation. Open PowerShell as an administrator if the servicing command requires elevation, then run:
Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName>Replace <FeatureName> with the feature identifier used by that Windows image. It may differ from the friendly name shown in Settings. The -Online option targets the currently running Windows installation, not an offline image.
You can also use an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window to list features and inspect one by name:

Dism /Online /Get-Features
Dism /Online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:<FeatureName>Record the reported state and any error code. The state helps distinguish a change waiting for restart from one that needs another source or further diagnosis.
If the change is pending, restart and check again
A state of EnablePending or DisablePending means Windows still needs to boot to complete the operation; it does not by itself show that the change permanently failed. Restart Windows, then run the feature query again and confirm whether the state has changed.

If you are enabling a feature, include its dependencies
When a feature is disabled and you want to enable it, Microsoft’s PowerShell procedure for the online image is:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName> -AllThe -All parameter enables required parent features and their default dependencies. Confirm the feature identifier before running the command; do not substitute a display label unless it is also the identifier for that image.

If Windows cannot find the files required to install a feature
Windows may need feature payload files that are not available locally. Microsoft describes a repair source as “a location that’s used to restore Windows optional features, enable Windows optional features, or repair a corrupted Windows image.” Depending on the device configuration, the source may be Windows Update or local Windows installation files.
Choose an available, compatible source
- Windows Update: It is the default repair source when policy allows it and the service is available.
- Local or shared Windows files: Documented choices include a mounted Windows image, a running Windows installation shared from its Windows folder, or an SxS folder on a network share or removable Windows installation media.
- WIM file: A WIM can be used as a source, but select the image index containing the required content.
A USB flash drive can carry installation media, but the drive itself is not a repair source; its Windows content must be suitable for the target installation.

Use an explicit local source only when it matches the target
For an intentional local-source attempt, use the appropriate path in a command such as:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName> -Source <SourcePath> -LimitAccess-LimitAccess prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update. Use it only when you intend to restrict the operation to the specified or configured local sources. If Windows Update is the intended source, omit -LimitAccess.

Do not assume any Windows ISO will work. Microsoft advises using RTM media and keeping the source patched to the latest cumulative update. If the target installation is more current than the source, the source may lack updated files needed for feature installation or OS repair.

Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM) can hide the optional-features interface, and a separate computer policy can define alternate sources for optional-component installation and repair. Microsoft notes that the documented policy for hiding the interface does not itself disable individual features; PowerShell can control a feature. If the device is managed, ask IT to check the applicable policy and approved repair source rather than trying to override organizational settings.
Verify the result and decide what to report
After a restart or servicing attempt, query the same feature again with Get-WindowsOptionalFeature or DISM. If the change still does not complete, provide IT or support with the feature identifier, the exact resulting state, the full error text and code, and whether the device is managed. The title alone does not identify a particular Windows version, feature, or error, so those details are necessary to narrow down the cause.
